  • Salinas school named after bandido ignites debate

    01/05/2013 10:27:51 AM PST · by Altura Ct. · 11 replies
Scaffolding climbs the walls of the new elementary school in Salinas, an agricultural city celebrated as John Steinbeck's birthplace but plagued by gang violence. Although still under construction, the school is already embroiled in controversy because the school board decided to name it after Tiburcio Vasquez, one of the state's most notorious Old West bandidos. Critics say he was a 19th-century outlaw who robbed and terrorized Californians before he was convicted and hanged for murder. They say naming a school after him glorifies crime. In a city where two-thirds of residents are Latino, some Mexican-Americans say Vasquez was defending his...

In an op ed piece for the New York Times, Georgetown Professor of Constitutional Law Louis Seidman asserts that “obedience to the Constitution blocks implementation of measures those in a position to know best want to enact.” “The heralded ‘checks and balances’ inflicted on us by this archaic document stifle the beneficence of wise leaders like President Obama,” Seidman wrote. “Unconstrained by the outdated philosophy of the nation’s founders, President Obama could easily bring a new era of social justice to America and the world.” Seidman cited the imperfections of the men who wrote the Constitution as grounds for rejecting...

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) -- Four gun shows, all about an hour's drive from Newtown, Conn., all canceled. A show in White Plains, N.Y., - brought back a few years ago after being called off for a decade because of the Columbine shooting - is off because officials decided it didn't seem appropriate now, either. In Danbury, Conn. - about 10 miles west of Newtown - the venue backed out. Same with three other shows in New York's Hudson Valley, according to the organizer. Gun advocates aren't backing down from their insistence on the right to keep and bear arms....

Evidence is mounting that the map of pistol permit owners, published by New York-based Journal News, could be causing unintended consequences as law abiding citizens are being put in danger, according to a NewsBusters report. At least two media reports have surfaced with specific references to people who are most vulnerable as a result of the map. It's open season on the House Republicans these days, and the incoming fire isn't just coming from the left. Chris Christie, the Republican governor of New Jersey, blasted House Speaker John Boehner for delaying a vote on Hurricane Sandy relief; the conservative commentator John Podhoretz accused right-wing members of Congress of "literally embracing chaos" with their ill-fated attempt to oust Boehner from the speakership on Thursday. Even within the GOP, it seems, the House GOP's actions of late seem beyond the pale. So I set out to find someone to defend them. I called former Rep. Steve LaTourette, an outspoken...
  • The Stealth Tax Hike: Why the new $450,000 income threshold is a political fiction

    01/05/2013 9:54:12 AM PST · by SeekAndFind · 17 replies
Anyone still need a reason to abandon "grand bargains" and deals negotiated between this President and GOP Congressional leaders? Here it is: The revival of two dormant provisions of the tax code means the much ballyhooed $450,000 income threshold for the highest tax rate is largely fake. The two provisions are the infamous PEP and Pease, which aficionados of stealth tax increases will recognize immediately as relics of the 1990 tax increase. Those measures, which limit deductions and exemptions for higher-income taxpayers, expired in 2010. The Obama tax bill revived them this week. It isn't going to be pretty. Under...

TOKYO (AFP) - Japan scrambled fighter jets on Saturday to head off a Chinese state-owned plane that flew near islands at the centre of a dispute between Tokyo and Beijing, a Japanese Defense Ministry spokesman said. The Japanese jets were mobilised after a Chinese maritime aircraft ventured some 120 km north of the Senkaku islands, which China calls the Diaoyus, at around 12:00 pm (11am Singapore time), the spokesman said. The Chinese Y-12 twin-turboprop later left the zone without entering Japanese airspace over the islands, he added. It was the first time Japanese fighter jets had been scrambled this year...

The December jobs figures out today indicate that there were 725,000 more jobs in the private sector than at the end of 2008 - and 697,000 fewer government jobs. That works into a private-sector gain of 0.6 percent, and a government sector decline of 3.1 percent. In total, the number of people with jobs is up by 28,000, or 0.02 percent. How does that compare? It is by far the largest four-year decline in government employment since the 1944-48...

The politics of the “fiscal cliff” deal is debatable: On the one hand, Boehner got the “Bush tax cuts” made permanent for most Americans; Obama was forced to abandon his goal of increasing rates for those earning $250,000. On the other, on taxes Republicans caved to the same class-warfare premises (the rich need to pay their “fair share”) they’d successfully fought off a mere two years ago; while on spending the Democrats not only refused to make cuts, they refused to make cuts even part of the discussion. Which of the above is correct? Who cares? As I said, the...

We're told Friday's jobs report is evidence of slow and steady progress. But it actually documents the new normal of Obama's economy - anemic job growth, chronic long-term unemployment and falling wages. Given how long the economy has been underperforming, even the smallest bit of good news is welcome. But the latest jobs report offers little of even that. The 155,000 new jobs created in December weren't enough to make a dent in unemployment. And at this pace, it will take more than two years just to reach the previous jobs peak set back in January 2008. And while the...

Where does human savagery come from? The animal behaviorist Marc Bekoff, writing in Psychology Today after last month's awful events in Newtown, Conn., echoed a common view: It can't possibly come from nature or evolution. Harsh aggression, he wrote, is "extremely rare" in nonhuman animals, while violence is merely an odd feature of our own species, produced by a few wicked people. If only we could "rewild our hearts," he concluded, we might harness our "inborn goodness and optimism" and thereby return to our "nice, kind, compassionate, empathic" original selves.

"[Our country] cannot and should not continue maintaining companies, productive entities, services and budgeted sectors with bloated payrolls (and) losses that hurt the economy, are counterproductive, and form bad work habits." Who said it?(Hit your Pg Dn key for the answer). . . . . . . . . . . .  Raúl Castro [Reuters 12/27/12, via Doug Urbanski filling in for El Rushbo 1/2/13] Not only did Raúl make this and similar statements, but since taking over Cuba from his ailing brother Fidel: The number of private (Cubans call them "non state") workers rose 23% in 2012 -- 1.1...

A man whose burglary of a St. Paul home was foiled by two women and a pink-handled handgun was sentenced Friday, Jan. 4, to nearly 11 years in prison. Described by his own attorney as a "career criminal," Marty Mark Childs has at least nine prior felony convictions, including residential burglary, theft and attempted escape. He had been out of prison on a previous burglary sentence less than four months when he walked through an unlocked back door of a house in the 1300 block of Fremont Street on Sept. 16. It was mid-afternoon, and Rebecca Larson, 56, was in...

This time I should’ve been the one listening. But listening can be tough sometimes when you’re an analyst and a commentator, and people around the country – listeners, readers, media, candidates, causes, businesses, etc. – come to you to find out why things are happening and what may happen next. Analysis and commentary is one of the few things in life I’m really good at. My car expertise begins and ends with changing a tire. Any toy that comes with the phrase “some assembly required” my kids immediately take to my wife. And when that much-anticipated Zombie apocalypse finally happens...

LOGANVILLE, Ga. —A woman hiding in her attic with children shot an intruder multiple times before fleeing to safety Friday. The incident happened at a home on Henderson Ridge Lane in Loganville around 1 p.m. The woman was working in an upstairs office when she spotted a strange man outside a window, according to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman. He said she took her 9-year-old twins to a crawlspace before the man broke in using a crowbar. But the man eventually found the family. "The perpetrator opens that door. Of course, at that time he's staring at her, her two...

Top Two Reasons to Own a Gun: Thank God and Sam Colt … My right to own a gun, to stroke it, to use it, and to pass it on to my children is not a matter of pragmatism, so I’m not going to argue statistics or polls, even though they’d be in my favor. And this list is in no particular order because, after the top two reasons, it really doesn’t matter how you order the rest. It’s like the top musical acts of the twentieth century; there’s Elvis and the Beatles and where you rank The Stones, The...

Initial Reaction The establishment survey report of +155,000 jobs was about what most expected. However, beneath the surface, this report looks weak. The household survey shows a gain of a mere 28,000 jobs. The unemployment rate stayed the same although the number of people unemployed rose by 164,000. December BLS Jobs Report at a Glance Payrolls +155,000 - Establishment Survey US Employment +28,000 - Household Survey Involuntary Part-Time Work -220,000 - Household Survey Baseline Unemployment Rate +.00 at 7.8% - Household Survey U-6 unemployment +.00 to 14.4% - Household Survey The Civilian Labor Force +192,000 - Household Survey Not in Labor Force ...

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has barely taken his oath of office as a United States Senator and he is already making news. He has a Washington Post op-ed in which he reiterates his "opportunity conservatism" approach to governance. The first bill he will file will be to repeal Obamacare. This and a combative stance on guns and fiscal policy have gotten the notice of the media.
