Dream of going to space but don’t feel like putting in the work to become a NASA astronaut? Here’s your chance to possibly make that fantasy come true. Mars One, a Netherlands-based nonprofit, is seeking volunteers to help colonize the Red Planet, according to Mashable. To meet an aggressive goal of putting people on Mars by 2023, Mars One released its basic astronaut requirements on January 8. Rather than recruiting scientists or pilots, the organization says it will consider anyone, so long as they are at least 18 years old. Intelligence, good mental and physical health and dedication to the...

  • Hoping to discourage car trips downtown, Austin may drop parking requirement

Austin might soon ditch a three-decade-old policy of requiring downtown buildings and tenant businesses to have a minimum number of parking spaces tied either to square footage or the number of condos and apartments in a building. Supporters of the move say the minimum requirement has caused a parking surplus downtown, encouraging people to use their cars rather than bikes, buses and rail. Take away that requirement, they say, and eventually garage parking will become a more scarce (and expensive) resource, encouraging people to use alternative transportation. (excerpt)

While on vacation in Hawaii this month, President Obama played golf with Allison Davis, a former business partner of Tony Rezko who also helped give Obama his start in the legal profession. Rezko is the former Obama associate and fundraiser who was convicted of corruption and fraud and currently sits in prison. Davis, who is male, partnered with Rezko on a series of government-funded low and mixed income housing development projects in Chicago. While Davis himself has never been charged with wrongdoing, a number of the projects were high-priced failures that resulted in poor living conditions for residents. According to...

At the White House on Friday, President Obama will meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzai. Although Mr. Karzai will presumably take up his continuous complaints that America has "imposed" corruption on his country, the more vital subject for both parties will be the size of the U.S. military footprint beyond 2014. Administration officials are already leaking that the U.S. presence will be smaller than that requested by Gen. John Allen. The U.S. commander in the region has said that a force of 6,000 to 20,000 troops is needed. The White House has floated that 3,000 to 4,000 may be sufficient....

WASHINGTON, June 27 - The Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the police did not have a constitutional duty to protect a person from harm, even a woman who had obtained a court-issued protective order against a violent husband making an arrest mandatory for a violation. The decision, with an opinion by Justice Antonin Scalia and dissents from Justices John Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, overturned a ruling by a federal appeals court in Colorado. The appeals court had permitted a lawsuit to proceed against a Colorado town, Castle Rock, for the failure of the police to respond to...

NO! No you won’t.. Not now, not ever.. President Obama, you have taken this country down a road that even your most ardent supporters have had to concede is entirely too far to the left of our National patience would have normally allowed with your entitlement philosophies.. Now you have focused on the second amendment, and this time you have taken on the very heart of this country’s pride, and the answer is NO, JUST NO! This time, Mr. President you have gone too far, and you are on the verge of total rebellion, not just from your detractors, but...

Donald Trump has placed himself in the middle of another controversy involving a birth certificate—this time his own. In a letter obtained by Yahoo News, the real estate mogul and de facto leader of last year's "birther" movement against President Barack Obama sent a copy of his New York City birth certificate to comedian Bill Maher, who earlier this week made a Trump-like demand to see it. On Monday's "Tonight Show With Jay Leno," Maher said he would donate $5 million to the charity of Trump’s choice (Maher suggested Hair Club for Men, among others) if the "Celebrity Apprentice" host...

From the leader of the unfailing public servants who brought you 350,000 Chicago students abandoned for two weeks, comes this gem. Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union: In the clip, recorded Dec. 2 during her keynote address of the Illinois Labor History Society’s Union Hall of Honor dinner and posted on YouTube Monday, Lewis noted that an earlier generation of labor leaders resolved their differences with the rich with a very straightforward mantra: "Off with their heads.""Do not think for a minute that the wealthy are ever going to allow you to legislate their riches away from them,"...

Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) – his office is planning to release the statement in full once Lew’s nomination is official but we have permission to use these excerpts NOW. I’d suggest sourcing as something like “according to excerpts of a statement by Sen. Jeff Sessions made in anticipation of the nomination obtained by Fox.” Though I realize that’s wordy. Sessions is the top Republican on...

Christopher Weaver was one of thousands of prisoners released from Oregon jails last year until his “get-out-of-jail-free” card quickly turned into a round-trip ticket and he was arrested a few hours later for robbing a bank. Local officials blamed the purge of 5,500 jailbirds including Weaver on dwindling federal funds marked for prison operations, but that revenue source was intended to be only a temporary economic fix. Those funds backfilled local tax revenue losses following the Oregon timber industry’s sharp decline in production after the 1990 spotted owl controversy. “The release of these inmates from the Lane County Jail is...

Dick Armey had no idea he was speaking to the left-wing Media Matters organization during an interview last week, he told The Daily Caller Tuesday. Instead, Armey thought he was chatting with the conservative Media Research Center. Armey and his tea party organization FreedomWorks parted ways in early December after disagreements over the direction of the powerful nonprofit and how the group’s money was being spent. A post published Friday by Media Matters blogger Joe Strupp relayed concerns by Armey — also a former House majority leader — about FreedomWorks’ expenditures, including several million dollars spent on sponsorship opportunities with...

TEHRAN – Tehran Prosecutor General Abbas Jafari Dolatabadi announced on Wednesday that a 125-page indictment has been issued for Mehdi Hashemi, the son of Expediency Council Chairman Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. Judiciary spokesman Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejeii had previously said, “As soon as the indictment is issued, efforts will be made to hold the court hearing.” Mehdi Hashemi was released from prison on December 17 on a bail of 100 billion rials ($8,156,606). He faces charges of inciting unrest after the 2009 presidential election.
