The Chinese government snubbed a U.S. request for help in cracking down on a string of alleged investment frauds that have cost Americans billions, outgoing Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro told ABC News. The lack of cooperation has stymied efforts to recoup investor losses, she said, in one of the largest sprees of alleged financial crimes in recent memory -- one that has gone largely unnoticed by most Americans. "The consequence is it´s very much more difficult for us to prove our cases," Schapiro said in one of her final interviews before leaving the post,

The renewed debate over gun rights that has followed the massacre of elementary schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., has included scrutiny over why gun advocates believe they need a right to bear arms. Among the reasons: Many advocates believe that individual gun ownership helps preserve American liberty, making government fearful of trampling on rights of its citizens. If government goes too far, the argument goes, Americans have the right to revolt by force. Is that argument correct? Or does it belong to fringe gun enthusiasts? Joel Mathis and Ben Boychuk, the RedBlueAmerica columnists, debate the question. Joel Mathis Does the Second...

Five Alaska State Troopers are suing over the way union dues are collected, arguing the current system infringes upon their constitutional rights. The federal lawsuit, filed Tuesday in Alaska, states that even though the five are non-union members, they still pay dues. The lawsuit states that employees who do not opt-out of the current system wind up paying full dues, including those that go toward political purposes.

Declining migration and falling birthrates have led to a drop in the number of children in California just as baby boomers reach retirement, creating an economic and demographic challenge for the nation's most populous state. "After decades of burgeoning population and economic growth…the state now faces a very different prospect," said a report released Tuesday by the University of Southern California and the Lucile Packard Foundation. The report, "California's Diminishing Resource: Children," analyzed data from the 2010 census and the American Community Survey to conclude that the trend marks a "historic transition" for the state.

Both countries claim drones will be used for surveillance, but experts warn of future skirmishes in region's airspace. Drones have taken centre stage in an escalating arms race between China and Japan as they struggle to assert their dominance over disputed islands in the East China Sea. China is rapidly expanding its nascent drone programme, while Japan has begun preparations to purchase an advanced model from the US. Both sides claim the drones will be used for surveillance, but experts warn the possibility of future drone skirmishes in the region's airspace is "very high". My (rhetorical) question is this: Why would a pro-abortion--or, "pro-choice" if you're looking for something more value neutral--advocate like Andrea Mitchell want the issue of life and death to be "value-neutral"? Here's a little nugget I came across today from Pastor John MacArthur: "They keep saying, 'A school is supposed to be a safe place!' Yeah well so is a womb. An Argentine navy ship was given a triumphant homecoming on Wednesday three months after it was seized in Ghana on behalf of a hedge fund suing over defaulted government bonds. The ARA Libertad, a tall sailing ship used as a training vessel, was detained in the West African nation on October 2 due to a court order obtained by NML Capital Ltd as it fights to get full repayment for the bonds in the courts. Argentina's government, which calls funds like NML "vultures," asked a U.N. maritime court to intervene and the Hamburg-based tribunal ordered the ship's release last month....

Ninety-six. That’s the number of 60-watt incandescent light bulbs I purchased last weekend after learning the other kind, the compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) environmentalists are so in love with, are hazardous to my health and to the environment. I would have preferred a higher wattage but discovered the 75-watt version was outlawed January 1st. It took about three hours to replace every CFL bulb in my house and carefully place them in a huge plastic container used to transport them to the recycling center at a local home improvement store. I said a quick prayer for safety while coasting down...

In an interview with the Daily Times Herald in Carroll, Iowa, state Rep. Dan Muhlbauer said governments should start confiscating semi-automatic rifles and other firearms. Muhlbauer, a Democrat from the western Iowa town of Manilla, is a cattleman and farmer. The newspaper reported that he owns a .410 shotgun, a .22 rifle and a .22 pistol. “We cannot have big guns out here as far as the big guns that are out here, the semi-automatics and all of them,” Muhlbauer told the newspaper during a December 19 audiotaped interview. “We can’t have those running around out here. Those are not...
  • Boston declares public health emergency as nation battles severe flu outbreak

The City of Boston declared a public health emergency Wednesday as the city and country deal with a historic outbreak of the flu. The influenza-ravaged city has seen about 700 confirmed cases of the virus since Oct. 1, the unofficial start of the flu season, according to the office of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who declared the state of emergency Wednesday morning. By comparison, Boston saw 70 confirmed cases during last year’s flu season. The outbreak has so far killed four Boston residents, all elderly, since the season unofficially began. “This is the worst flu season we’ve seen since 2009,...

by John HillStand With ArizonaAs Barack Obama and his gun control supplicant Joe Biden move to use the school murders in Newtown, CT's "gun-free zone" as an excuse to grab the guns of law-abiding Americans, a new poll shows that most Americans actually want more of an armed presence in our schools to protect students from madmen. And Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio isn't waiting for Washington to act. Sheriff Joe today deployed 500 armed volunteers to patrol outside 59 schools in metropolitan Phoenix.  400 of these volunteers are part of  3,000-strong Joe's "Posse" and another 100 volunteers known as reserve deputies...

MORRISTOWN (WATE) - A same-sex couple applied for a marriage license in Morristown Wednesday, despite a state law that won't recognize their union. It's part of an effort by a group called the Campaign for Southern Equality. In a procession surrounded by friends and family, Matt Griffin and Raymie Wolfe made their way to the county clerk's desk in a ceremonial request for a marriage license. "Based on Tennessee law, I will not be able to issue a marriage license," the clerk told the couple. It was the answer they expected, but it was still an important step for the...

A popular textbook used by institutions and teachers to teach English as a second language has been found to have a disturbing anti-Israel undertone. The textbook contains a map of the Middle East, labelling and identifying the countries displayed and presenting it as part of an exercise for a “Jordanian student at Greenhill College”. The map however, leaves off the label of “Israel”, instead replacing it with the words “Occupied Palestine”. The book, “Skills in English: Writing Level 1” is utilized by teachers across the United Kingdom and further afield. The Duke of Edinburgh ESU English Language Award judges called...

We've all heard the story of the "40 acres and a mule" promise to former slaves. It's a staple of black history lessons, and it's the name of Spike Lee's film company. The promise was the first systematic attempt to provide a form of reparations to newly freed slaves, and it was astonishingly radical for its time, proto-socialist in its implications. In fact, such a policy would be radical in any country today: the federal government's massive confiscation of private property -- some 400,000 acres -- formerly owned by Confederate land owners, and its methodical redistribution to former black slaves....

ARKANSAS NEWS BUREAU LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas’ immigrant population, among the fastest-growing in the nation, has a positive impact on the state’s economy, according to results of a study released Tuesday. The report, “A Profile of Immigrants in Arkansas 2013” commissioned by the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, also found that more than 4 in 10 immigrants in the state are undocumented. The immigrant population here grew by 82 percent between 2000 and 2010, according to the report, a rate behind only Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.
