  • Melissa Harris Perry On Cabinet Diversity: Clarence Thomas Doesn't Represent Blacks (video)

MSNBC host and commentator Melissa Harris Perry excuses the lack of diversity in President Obama's cabinet by saying just because someone is of one gender or has a certain skin color doesn't mean that they represent that specific group. Harris Perry cites Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as an example, who she says doesn't represent "the vast majority" of African-Americans. MSNBC host and commentator Melissa Harris Perry says we should "be careful" when it comes to calling out the hypocrisy of President Obama for having a not so diverse cabinet. Perry says we don't want to "assume that any given...

Trailer, 84, was the host of the popular children’s television show “Boomtown,” on WBZ-TV from 1956 to 1974. The program often included children with disabilities in the studio audience. Trailer, who lived in Sudbury, was in Florida for Christmas visiting his sister when he came down with pneumonia and went into the hospital. Pardon the vanity, but here goes. Has anybody received their W2 forms yet? The reason I ask is because, starting this year, many employers have to report how much they contributed to our health insurance premiums. This is a provision of Obama(mis)care. Here is a link from the Horses...mouth. Employers over a certain threshold number of employees need to start reporting this number, but it's only "informational" this year. In years to come, some of that number will be considered taxable income if it's over a certain amount, because it's considered "Cadillac Insurance." This is a tax "only on the...

CES 2013: Eight-core A7 and A15 mix Detailed back in November last year, Samsung's new eight-core Exynos is now official. Samsung announced the new mobile SoC based on the big.LITTLE configuration during its second-day keynote at CES. Based on two quad-core clusters stitched together, the 28nm Samsung Exynos 5 Octa is not your standard eight-core chip as it either uses more powerful 1.8GHz clocked Cortex-A15 or more power effective 1.2GHz clocked Cortex-A7 cluster for standard workloads. Samsung noted that it has managed to cut down the power consumption by up to 70 percent when compared to the Exynos 5...

News has just broke that Scott Richard Swirling, former director of the pro-abortion National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association (NFPRHA), has been arrested in a child sex sting. Swirling was caught trying to solicit sex with a twelve-year-old girl online; luckily, it was an undercover police officer and Swirling was taken into custody. Scott Richard Swirling, 61, thought he was discussing plans to meet a District man who was offering to let him have sex with his preteen daughter, authorities said. My heart is broken, deeply broken. Is there no one in Illinois who has the moral compunction to stand up to the corruption known as Chicago? Will any Illinois person of honor come forward to put a stop to what is going on? When I received an anonymous E-mail about the Land of Lincoln–where our governors make our license plates–I couldn’t laugh any more. You see, there always has been a perverse sort of gallows humor, perhaps even misplaced sense of pride associated with Chicago. When I tell people here in Florida that I’m from near Chicago, I sense that...

Last night in an ironically titled episode, “Small Victories,” the NBC show Parenthood included an abortion story line, after one of the characters playing a high school girl found she had been impregnated by her teen boyfriend. Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards was ecstatic, because her abortion biz was mentioned and featured prominently, including its new logo (see screen shot above)! Planned Parenthood Action was a little less obvious, simply retweeting that the episode was “refreshing”… Refreshing? I saw a lot of heartbreak. I saw a lot of crying. Loans that meet the agency’s new lending criteria now will be called a “qualified mortgage.” Qualified mortgages will be given protection for the bank from lawsuits filed by troubled borrowers or buyers of mortgage-backed bonds. A “qualified mortgage” will consist of the following: • Lenders must prove that income and assets are sufficient to repay the loan (this applies to jumbo...

A pro-life group has released the graphic images today of a woman who was killed in a botched legal abortion. The group says they are some of the first images ever seen publicly of a woman who was brutalized by an abortion that claimed her life. When 18-year-old Marla Cardamone was killed having an abortion at a Pennsylvania hospital, her mother, Deborah, vowed that she would never let her daughter be forgotten. DEMRE, Turkey — In the fourth century A.D., a bishop named Nicholas transformed the city of Myra, on the Mediterranean coast of what is now Turkey, into a Christian capital. One wall of the chapel has a cross-shaped window that, when sunlit, beams its shape onto an altar table. A vibrant fresco that is unusual for Turkey was perfectly preserved. Nicholas was later canonized, becoming the St. Nicholas of Christmas fame. Myra had a much unhappier fate. After some 800 years as an important pilgrimage site in the Byzantine Empire it vanished — buried under 18 feet of mud from...

Has modern Christianity formed a new Church? I'll keep the journey into history simple. In the last 2000 years the churches large enough to survive the attacks by larger established churches could survive. They were not civil nor peaceful. They conducted massive wars against each other. However, over the last several decades, something different has happened, a new church has formed. All these churches that used to slaughter each other now accept the baptisms and membership performed by their one time rivals. Individual doctrines no longer matter. Their adherents now claim everyone is "saved" in the body of Christ. Modern...

Reducing unemployment is critical to a housing recovery in the USA. Unfortunately, unemployment is not falling as quickly as it should. Initial jobless claims were released this morning and showed an increase of 371,000, up from the downward revised print of 367,000 from last week. The expected print was 365,000. Notice that there has not been much improvement over the past year (SA). On a non seasonally adjusted (NSA) basis, we can see the deteriorating trend in initial jobless claims since September. With 12 nominations, Lincoln led the pack as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominated nine movies for its best picture Oscar on Thursday morning. Academy voters embraced a widely eclectic list of films that included the French-language drama Amour and the indie breakout Beasts of the Southern Wild as well as Argo, Django Unchained, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Silvers Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty. In a year that appeared to embrace extremes, the nominees for...

To paraphrase Ms. Parker, “What fresh tyranny is this?” “With this pen, I thee shred.” What part of “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed” does the professor of Constitutional Law not grasp? Ah! That’s not really the operative question, is it?(snip) Joey’s out there floating some trial balloons: how far can we go before the people raise those arms they’ve been given the right to bear? h/t Doug Ross Don’t worry though, the Oscar nominations just came out. That means that politics-weary country can turn its attention back to Hollywood as...

It is generally held that Catholic Social Teaching begins with Pope Leo XIII’s masterly encyclical, Rerum Novarum (1891). That, as I’ve tried to show, is a dreadful mistake. Pope Leo considered it his duty to apply to current concerns the constant teaching of the Church and of the word of God. Like Thomas Aquinas, the study of whose works he promoted vigorously, he would have considered “originality” a vice, not a virtue. Perhaps we are misled by the title, Rerum Novarum. In our anti-society of rapacious consumption of the “new” and “improved,” and the unease instilled in us by mass...

And baby makes seven! Rosie O’Donnell surprised fans on Tuesday when she tweeted a photo of herself and wife Michelle Rounds holding their brand new bundle of joy. “we r thrilled to announce the arrival of r daughter Dakota - #withloveandthanks – AMEN,” O’Donnell wrote beneath the pic, which features the two women cradling the tiny infant. The couple adopted the baby this week. Back in January, O’Donnell told Dr. Oz on his daytime talk show that Rounds, now 41, was “trying to get pregnant.” After that interview, however, Rounds was diagnosed with desmoids tumors, a rare condition that...

A London-based order of nuns is to open its seventh convent in the space of just 20 years. The Tyburn Nuns, whose mother house is situated near Marble Arch, have started to build their first African monastery in the Diocese of Minna in Niger State in the north of Nigeria. It will be their 11th monastery, the 10th since the Second World War and the seventh to open in a rapid global proliferation of religious houses under the order since 1993. The contemplative Benedictines were invited to Nigeria to promote Eucharistic Adoration and to pray for peace in a country...

Say, anyone interested in actual facts about guns, violence, and schools? If so, Reason's Nick Gillespie and Amanda Winkler have five key points about the actual status of school safety and the impact of guns on American society. The truth is that violent crime and mass shootings have declined since the 1990s, even with events like Newtown and Aurora. Schools are safer now than in decades. However, those data points don't lend themselves to hysterics hoping to panic people into bad legislation that won't solve the problems they supposedly address: CLICK ABOVE LINK FOR THE VIDEO 1. Violent crime –...
