When Tony Blair visited Beijing a few weeks ago to open a prestigious conference on philanthropy, he showed he had lost none of the evangelical fervour that once dazzled British voters. Giving an impassioned sermon to an A-list audience on the crucial role of compassion, the former Prime Minister spoke of how societies should be measured not just by what people do for themselves, but by what they do for others. ‘The best philanthropy is about changing the world,’ he proclaimed. ‘Flourishing philanthropy is an essential part of a flourishing society.’ Blair told well-heeled listeners paying nearly £1,500 a head...

This is not unexpected. The Newtown, Conn., elementary school shooting is the impetus. While the deaths at the school are beyond tragic, firearms confiscation and an assault weapons ban (however defined) are liberal opportunism. It is the government attempting to usurp our rights. We are made in the image of God. Traditionally, this includes the capacity to reason, to make moral judgments, communicate through language, develop relationships governed by love and commitment, create and enjoy all sorts of arts, and to investigate our universe through scientific developments. Being made in his image, God gave man dominion over all the earth....

We are in the midst of a crisis of federalism and we dont even know it. In November, the states of Colorado and Washington legalized recreational marijuana use, while 16 other states and Washington, D.C., already permitted the medical use of marijuana. Yet at the same time, the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 prohibits the cultivation, sale, and use of marijuana in all its forms. State and federal law are at odds. The Constitution is plain: Federal law is the supreme law of the land (Article VI, section 2). The Taliban, which harbored al Qaeda in Afghanistan in the lead up to the 9/11 attacks on America in 2001, will have an office in Afghanistan and engage in direct talks with the democratic government there, President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai affirmed at a joint White House news conference Friday. Ultimately security gains must be matched by political progress, so weve recommitted our nations to a reconciliation process between the Afghan government and the Taliban, Obama said. Adult film production company Vivid Entertainment, along with porn actors Kayden Kross and Logan Pierce, have filed a federal lawsuit against Los Angeles County, seeking to overturn a newly enacted condom law. LA County voters approved a measure that requires adult film performers to use condoms while filming sex scenes within the county borders. According to the Los Angeles Times, Vivid's lawsuit claims the new ordinance violates the performers' right to freedom of expression under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. During a hotly debated build up to the ballot, proponents of the measure claimed they were working for...

Gabriella Hoffmans paycheck is a little lighter today, thanks to a payroll tax increase that is forcing millions of Americans to make the kind of tough budget cuts their representatives in Washington lawmakers seem unwilling to tackle. Hoffman, a 21-year-old Virginian who works at a nonprofit, estimates her paycheck will be roughly $30 less this biweekly pay period, or about $780 annually, thanks to the end of a two-year cut on payroll taxes, which fund Social Security. The tax has risen back up to 6.2 percent from 4.2 percent, costing someone making $50,000 annually about $1,000 per year and a...

Thank you for using the White House's online petitions platform to participate in your government. In a nation of 300 million people -- each with their own set of deeply-held beliefs -- democracy can be noisy and controversial. And that's a good thing. Free and open debate is what makes this country work, and many people around the world risk their lives every day for the liberties we often take for granted. America continues to lose ground in economic libertyThe United States is no longer a beacon of freedom to the world. Countries once looked to America for inspiration on how to escape poverty and embrace prosperity, but now they can find better examples to follow. The Heritage Foundation on Thursday noted our fifth consecutive decline in its annual Index of Economic Freedom. Its a sad day when countries such as Chile and Mauritius can outdo the red-white-and-blue when it comes to opportunity. Asteroid Apophis which is the size of three and a half football fields was discovered in June 2004 and gained infamy after a preliminary study suggested it had a 2.7 percent chance of hitting the Earth during its 2029 flyby. To the editor: A recent editorial called for unlimited gun ownership to defend against the government. I hear this argument a lot, but what good is your AR-15 when you're fighting the full force of the United States military? All they have to do is drop a smart bomb on your house from high above and you're done. You wouldn't even see it coming. Alternatively, they could simply run over your house with a Kevlar-plated M1 Abrams tank, or shell your dwelling from cannons positioned far away. BEGIN TRANSCRIPT RUSH: Here's a headline from CNBC: "Major Flu Outbreak Threatens to Slow the Economy Further." Now, what the hell kind of headline is this? "Major Flu Outbreak Threatens to Slow the Economy Further." It was just yesterday I was talking about media propagandists, and you see this headline, and you have to understand that I know what I'm talking about and I was right. The flu threatens to slow the economy further? Really? They're throwing that out there now? We know that it's not the flu slowing down the economy! We know it's not the flu that has...

Jennifer O'Brien, an Elmwood Park resident who began working for Paterson schools in 1998, claimed in her appeal that her comments were protected by the First Amendment, and that her right to express her opinion "was outweighed by the district's interest in the...

District of Columbia Attorney General Irvin Nathan issued a lengthy letter today explaining the decision not to prosecute David Gregory despite despite the clarity of the violation of this important law, despite rejecting NBCs claims of a subjective misunderstanding of the law, and despite vowing vigorous enforcement of gun laws. -snip- t further undermines public confidence in such decisions to find out that Nathan knew Gregory and his wife, high-powered attorney Beth Wilkinson. Anne dug up the connection in which in 2011 Nathan and Wilkinson participated together in a charity mock trial for the Washington, D.C. Shakespeare Theatre Company (emphasis...

At the direction of the Obama Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) the National Park Service has revoked the permit of the ANSWER Coalition to hold a large scale Speak-out of Americas Unemployed for Jobs and Justice in Freedom Plaza during the Inauguration Day events on January 21, 2013. The historical irony of the decision to evict a rally of the unemployed from Freedom Plaza (named in honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.) on January 21(the day honoring Dr. Kings birth) is hard to overstate. Exactly five years to the day (January 21, 2008) then-candidate Barack Obama said in response to a...

Employers may be hiring, but there's another big problem with the job market that isn't being tracked as closely: the hopelessly unemployed. An often overlooked number calculated by the Labor Department shows millions of Americans want a job but haven't searched for one in at least a year. They've simply given up hope. They're not counted as part of the labor force, the official unemployment rate, or the category the Labor Department refers to as "discouraged workers" -- those who haven't bothered to look for work in the last four weeks. These hopelessly unemployed workers have just been jobless so...

If you had buttonholed me in the Senate mens room circa 2003 and told me that a decade hence Joe Biden would be Americas vice president, John Kerry secretary of state, and Chuck Hagel secretary of defense, Id have laughed and waited for the punch line: The Leahy administration? President Lautenberg? Celebrate lack of diversity! But even in the republics descent into a Blowhardocracy staffed by a Zombie House of Lords, there are distinctions to be drawn.

"In 1967, Radio Shack introduced the DX-150 general coverage ...Over the next few years, this line underwent several improvements.. . In 1975 the DX-160 was introduced with the most noticeable change being the addition of a LW band (150-400 kHz). This family of radios was made for Radio Shack by General Research of Electronics, Inc. of Japan....My impressions? This is as solid a radio as I could ask for given its age and simplicity of design. It has reasonably good selectivity and you have to be careful to tune it slowly or you'll miss the station you're looking for. The...
