Embattled St. George businessman Jeremy Johnson says new Utah Attorney General John Swallow helped broker a deal in 2010 in which Johnson believed he was to pay Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid $600,000 to make a federal investigation into Johnsonís company go away. But when the federal government filed a lawsuit Johnson thought he had paid to quash, he demanded Swallow return some of the $250,000 initial payment. Then, just days before the Nov. 6 election, Johnson engaged in a frenetic but unsuccessful effort to get Swallow to drop out of the race, saying information about what Johnson called a...

House Republican defense hawks are pushing back strongly against Speaker John Boehnerís (R-Ohio) claim that he has GOP support to allow steep automatic budget cuts to take effect if President Obama does not agree to replace them with other reductions. Party leaders have for more than a year railed against the Pentagon portion of the across-the-board cuts known as sequestration, but in an interview published Monday, Boehner pointed to the reductions as leverage and said he had significant Republican support, including from defense hawks, in his ďback pocket.Ē Not so fast, two defense-minded House Republicans told The Hill. ďI donít...

The nagging nanny of New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is at it again, engaging in his favorite activity, telling his citizens what they can consume. This time, the Mayor is targeting prescription painkillers in the cityís emergency rooms. By mayoral edict, he will reduce the supply of certain pain medication in the emergency rooms owned by the city.

Conservatives are taking aim at the pork-laden $50.7 billion Superstorm Sandy aid package that Northeastern governors and lawmakers hope to push through the House this coming week. Too much of the aid will go to recovery efforts for past disasters and other projects unrelated to the late-October storm, they say. The bill includes $150 million for what the Commerce Department described as fisheries disasters in places as far afield as Alaska and Mississippi, and $50 million in subsidies for replanting trees on private land damaged by wildfires. Ö The objections have led senior House Republicans to assemble a $17 billion...

President Barack Obamaís decision on Friday to speed up the drawdown of U.S. troops in Afghanistan ďreopens the possibility of the Taliban to emerge as a major player,Ē former Michigan Congressman Pete Hoekstra tells Newsmax. ďIt is a signal to the Afghan peopleóhe signaled to the Taliban, and he signaled to the American peopleóthat the U.S. role, the U.S. mission in Afghanistan, is done,Ē Hoekstra, the former GOP chairman of the powerful House Intelligence Committee, tells Newsmax TV in an exclusive interview. ďIt may not be completed, but it is finished. The US will no longer be there primarily to...

The Internal Revenue Service warned employers in a new regulatory edict that ďscrupulous adherence to the rules will not be tolerated if the intent is merely to minimize costs.Ē The IRS issued the edict amidst reports that many business owners were limiting employee hours or hiring temps in order to avoid Obamacareís health insurance mandates. ďWhile the law may say that only full time employees must be covered, the Presidentís intent is to see that everyone has health insurance,Ē the IRS wrote. ďReplacing full-time employees with part-timers or outsourcing jobs to temp agencies as a means of lowering costs will...

New questions are being asked about the ethics of Sen. Harry Reid; a Utah businessman is alleging that his state's attorney general demanded $600,000 as a bribe to Reid in exchange for dismissal of a federal investigation. Certainly the allegations could be false, but it's worth noting this isn't the first time Reid's name has come up in connection with some pretty shady propositions. †Remember the shady, underpriced land deal? †Or the green energy conflict? There's so much there, pithily summed up by Investors Business Daily as follows: . . .shadowy years he ran the Nevada Gaming Commission, through his...

A U.S. Army brigade will begin sending small teams into as many as 35 African nations early next year, part of an intensifying Pentagon effort to train countries to battle extremists. The teams will be limited to training and equipping efforts, and won't be permitted to conduct military operations without specific, additional approval from the secretary of defense. The sharper focus on Africa by the U.S. comes against a backdrop of widespread insurgent violence across North Africa, and as the African Union and other nations discuss military intervention in northern Mali.

As Washington focuses on what Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will propose next week to curb gun violence, gun and ammunition sales are spiking in the rest of the country as people rush to expand their arsenals in advance of any restrictions that might be imposed. People were crowded five deep at the tiny counter of a gun shop near Atlanta, where a pastor from Knoxville, Tenn., was among the customers who showed up in person after the storeís Web site halted sales because of low inventory. Emptying gun cases and bare shelves gave a picked-over feel to gun...

The hot new video at MRCTV.org is 1995 footage of Attorney General Eric Holder, when he was the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. In his remarks before the Womanís National Democratic Club, broadcast by CSPAN 2, Holder said people should be ashamed to own guns, just the way that cigarette smokes now ďcower outside of buildingsĒ to smoke. ďWhat we need to do is change the way in which people think about guns, especially young people, and make it something thatís not cool, that itís not acceptable, itís not hip to carry a gun anymore, in the way...

How bad is the USAís debt problem (as we approach the dreaded debt ceiling debate)? Federal government debt held by the public surged starting in Q2 2008. But since Q2 2008, government debt held by the public surged 113%. But real GDP growth over 4+ years was a measly 2.6%. Thatís not annual real GDP growth, but real GDP growth over 4+ years! Most people donít talk about government debt held by the public. Instead, they focus on Total Public Debt, the one that stands at $16,432,692,129,510.84 While not as dramatic as Federal debt held by the public, it is...
