  • The Best Conservative Movies of 2012

I admit to using the word "conservative" loosely -- we are talking about Hollywood, after all. It here refers to those films that are at least respectful of the American experience and generally supportive of faith, family, and/or country. A film can score as much as 50 on the quality scale and 50 on the conservative scale, the latter graded on a Hollywood curve. The two values are equally weighted. Although it may not seem obvious, 2012 was a better year than most. 10. Dark Knight Rises 75 In the third of Christopher Nolan's trilogy, Batman comes out of retirement...

What is the most dangerous place in America? Is it the mean streets of the south side of Chicago? Well, it's very dangerous there, more dangerous than Afghanistan, apparently. But no, that is not the most dangerous place in America. Is it Detroit? No.  South Central LA? No. Miami? No. Is it the war zone we call our southern border? No. Those are very dangerous places, unfortunately. But the most dangerous place to be in America is in the womb of your mother. Abortion is the leading cause of death in this country. Think about that. What should be the...

.... for several months, rumors have been circulating within the United States defense and intelligence communities that a Chinese anti-satellite test is imminent. It might be conducted on Jan. 11, the date on which China performed ASAT operations in both 2007 and 2010. “Our hope is that getting this out in the open can facilitate a meaningful bilateral dialogue on space security, or, at the very least, get the Obama administration to explain why it refuses to talk to the Chinese about their plans to test,” Kulacki told If indeed a China ASAT test is on the horizon, what...

Dozens of Illinois business leaders and several companies publicly endorsed gay marriage Sunday in an attempt to reignite the issue after a proposed bill failed to get traction in Springfield this month. State lawmakers aren't scheduled to be at the Capitol much until early February, and sponsors of a measure to grant gay and lesbian couples the freedom to marry are likely to need some time to win over dozens of rookie colleagues. But in an open letter issued Sunday, business executives stated their case to lawmakers that marriage equality would strengthen the Illinois workforce and boost economic development.

Sometimes it’s better to tell a story backwards, from end to beginning. This story ends on December 10, 2012, when President Obama traveled to Michigan—a state with unemployment over 9 percent. He made a stop in Detroit, Michigan’s largest city, which is bankrupt. There, Obama made the ironic boast: “You only have to look to Michigan where workers were instrumental in reviving the auto industry to see how unions have helped build not just a stronger middle class but a stronger America.” Of course, the auto industry, like much of the rest of Detroit, is in ruins. This is the...

And one of his first moves has been to strike up a friendship with tea party star and fellow Texan, Sen. Ted Cruz. In the new Congress, Cornyn is rapidly flexing conservative muscle over fiscal issues and President Barack Obama’s Cabinet nominees. It comes at the same time he is seeking an alliance with Cruz, the freshman senator who pulled off an upset victory over an establishment favorite in last year’s Texas GOP primary. Drilling in the vast shale fields of Texas, North Dakota and elsewhere in the United States may not look much different from the drilling many people remember from earlier booms, but the technology used to break apart shale rocks – and hold the cracks open, allowing fossil fuels to flow into the well – has created a new wave of entrepreneurs. As Michigan transitions to a right-to-work state, the main benefit for teachers and others is that they will not be forced to financially support a union as a condition of employment. Probably the biggest complaint from public school teachers about their union is the amount of money spent on politics — and where that money goes. This shouldn’t be surprising: The National Education Association, the largest teachers union in the country, took a survey of its membership a few years back and found that a strong majority classify themselves as politically “conservative.” Yet at the same time, the Michigan Education...

Wholesale (spot) coal prices across all basins fell during the first half of 2012 before stabilizing in the latter half of the year. Competition between natural gas and coal for electric power generation drove price declines in the Appalachian and Powder River Basins (PRB), two key sources for thermal coal, through the summer. Also, mild temperatures in the winter and high stockpiles at electric power plants limited demand for more purchases of coal in the second half of 2012. While spot prices fell across the country, the Appalachian and Powder River Basins were affected the most. With new competition from...

Real Clear Politics has uncovered an organized, well-funded and concerted effort by Washington Republican insiders to circle the wagons around incumbents who may see primary challenges.  Scott Rasmussen described it in a headline as, “Republican Establishment Declares War on GOP Voters.” Post-election analysis...

The study—“Violent Crime Against Youth, 1994-2010”–also discovered that American youth who were victims of a serious violent crime in 2010 were six times more likely to have been attacked by a perpetrator wielding a knife than one wielding a gun. In doing so Obama repeats the common fallacy that combat experience necessarily qualifies someone to make decisions about when, why, and how to conduct a war, decisions that in our political system are reserved for citizens and their representatives whether veterans or not. In fact, though, often those same experiences––whatever they teach about the horrors of combat, or reveal about the bravery and character of those who experience it––can distort someone’s judgment about the larger aims and...

Anyone know what Vice President Joe Biden’s gamer handle is? Maybe “StandUpChuck” or “Amtrak1” or “NoChanceIn2016?” How about Attorney General Eric Holder (“Fast-
andFuriousUnleashed”)? Or Health and Human Services chief Kathleen Sebelius (“WhatsAGamerHandle?”). I ask because these folks led Friday’s session of the White House task force that grilled members of the video game industry. Three people who couldn’t tell “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” from “Assassin’s Creed II.” To be honest, I’m not entirely sure I could, either. (Is “Halo” the one with Master Chief, or is it “Gears of War”?) But I’m not the one accusing an entire multibillion-dollar,...

For the better part of four years, all we have heard out of the Obama administration and the rest of the liberal Democrats is that Republicans are waging a war. They claim it is a war on women, hence the hyperbole over contraception, and a war on minorities. To hear Vice-President Joe Biden tell it, you would think the Republican Party wants to put minorities "back in chains". I'm here to tell you their claims just are not true, at least not here in Oklahoma. In 2010, we elected our first female governor in Mary Fallin and by all accounts,...

Dealing with Washington D.C. is a lot like The Godfather, Part III: Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in. As expected, the IRS scrambled on 3 January 2013 to supersede and replace the withholding instructions it had previously issued on 31 December 2012, which we immortalized in the Part 2 version of our 2013 paycheck tool. That makes our tool "Your Paycheck in 2013: Part 3" the final version of our 2013 paycheck estimating tool, at least until the politicians in Washington D.C. start monkeying with the tax code. Again. For now however, it would appear...

Stick to your guns–no matter what! by Matt Bracken, January 2013 If a firearm was legal in 2012, under the 2nd Amendment it’s still legal in 2013 and it will be legal forever, no matter what so-called “executive orders” are handed down or new “laws” are passed by a panicking Congress. Those who say otherwise are liars and traitors and oath breakers and domestic enemies. If they come to take away your guns by force, they have declared war on the Constitution, and on you. At that point, war is joined, just as it was during another famous gun confiscation...

A Panels Politics poll conducted for the Knesset Channel predicts that Kadima – until recently the Knesset's largest party with 28 seats – will receive 3 seats in the next Knesset. Most other polls predict that Kadima, which was created by Ariel Sharon following the Gaza Disengagement, will completely disappear from the Knesset. Otzma Leyisrael, headed by MKs Aryeh Eldad and Michael Ben Ari, also receives three seats in this poll. The poll is largely consistent with most other polls in showing that Likud / Yisrael Beytenu will receive 35 seats, whereas Labor would receive 17 seats. Bayit Yehudi would...

After years of languishing under the duck boots of gun owners, gun control advocates are dusting off their iPads and heading into the fray. Their renewed excitement has as much to do with the dead kids of Newtown as it does with the prospect of four years of a lame duck leftist who asserts imperial executive authority and uses the Constitution to clean up coffee spills in the Oval Office. Taking on the NRA with a gun ban, like taking on pro-Israel voters by nominating a Defense Secretary and CIA Director who prefer that Israel not exist, is part of...
