  • Bob Schieffer Likens Obama 'Taking on the Gun Lobby' to Hunt for Bin Laden

    01/16/2013 11:40:16 AM PST · by chessplayer · 39 replies
Bob Schieffer somehow topped Chris Matthews during CBS News's special coverage of President Obama's gun control press conference on Wednesday, as he became the worst caricature of a foaming-at-the-mouth cheerleader for the chief executive. Schieffer lauded "one of the best speeches I've ever heard him [Obama] deliver", and compared Obama's new gun control agenda to Lyndon Johnson's push for civil rights legislation in the 1960s. The CBS veteran even went so far to liken the President's cause to the ten-year hunt for 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden and the difficult endeavor of winning World War II [audio available here; video...

San Antonio-based Valero Energy Corp., is planning to build a new crude topper unit at its Houston refinery to expand its capacity to process light sweet crude oil from the Eagle Ford shale in South Texas. The refinery already processes 20,000 to 40,000 barrels a day of crude oil from the Eagle Ford, Valero spokesman Bill Day said, and the expansion would allow it to use more. No construction date has been set, but plans call for the work to be completed by mid-2015.

Jeffrey Goldberg, an indefatigable defender of the president when it comes to Israel, has done the president no favors by revealing President Obama’s deep-seated arrogance and lack of respect for our democratic ally Israel. Goldberg writes: In the weeks after the UN vote [on Palestinian observer status], Obama said privately and repeatedly, “Israel doesn’t know what its own best interests are.” With each new settlement announcement, in Obama’s view, Netanyahu is moving his country down a path toward near-total isolation. . . . On matters related to the Palestinians, the president seems to view the prime minister as a political...

The South African government and its trade union allies are attempting to head off a new crisis in the mining industry after platinum workers at three pits downed tools on Wednesday in protest at plans by Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) to cut 14,000 jobs. Mining minister Susan Shabangu said the world's biggest platinum producer failed to consult properly with the government before making the announcement to close four pits. The halt in production after the spontaneous downing of tools by key groups of Amplats miners drew fears of a new crisis in South African mines. Amid a breakdown in labour...

FrackNation is the film that will tell the truth about fracking. There are two sides of every story and then there is the truth. FrackNation is the film that will tell the truth about fracking. People across the US told us that everything we had heard about fracking was wrong. They say that anti-fracking campaigns, one-sided media coverage and moratoriums and bans have damaged the lives of thousands of people who are now desperate to have their voices heard. Journalist Phelim McAleer faces threats, cops and bogus lawsuits questioning green extremists for the truth about fracking. McAleer uncovers fracking facts...

President Barack Obama proposed a new assault weapons ban and mandatory background checks for all gun buyers on Wednesday as he tried to channel national outrage over the Newtown school massacre into the biggest U.S. gun-control push in decades. Rolling out a wide-ranging plan for executive and legislative action to curb gun violence, Obama set up a fierce clash with the powerful U.S. gun lobby and its supporters in Congress, who will resist what they see as an encroachment on constitutionally protected gun rights. Obama presented his agenda at a White House event in front of an audience that included...

CAIR Chicago is trying to stop our counter campaign to theitr bizarre jihad propaganda. Silence freedom of speech. Sharia enforcement. I received a "cease and desist" letter from Hamas-CAIR's Ahmed Rehab (Mr. Jihad), claiming ownership of "my jihad." Tell that to the millions of Muslims waging jihad in the cause of Islam. Litigation jihad -- that's Ahmed's jihad, what's yours? The imperialistic and supremacist group is claiming ownership of holy war and what amounts to a hashtag (#myjihad). Is that a first? They love using American law to crush American freedoms. In this case of parody (as in most things),...
  • A strong euro is the last thing Europe needs if currency war dawns

Yesterday Jean-Claude Juncker, who presides over meetings of European finance ministers, complained that the euro’s value has become “dangerously high.” The comments took many by surprise; it’s when the currency has been strongest that investors have shown the most faith in the euro’s continued survival. The euro hit $1.34 on Monday—its highest value since February 2011. But ironically, this renewed faith in the euro currency comes at the worst possible time for the euro-zone economy. Although policymakers finally appear to be making a concerted slog towards union, the years of political turmoil have severely stunted investment in the euro zone,...

WASHINGTON -- President Obama thinks the debate over raising the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling isn't the place or the time to be discussing runaway spending. Essentially, that was his message Monday in a full-court press assault on Republicans in Congress for having the temerity to suggest that before we raise the debt ceiling by another $2 trillion, maybe we should begin discussing how to reduce spending, how to shrink our monstrous national debt and how the government must begin living within its means. But with the government debt soaring toward nearly $19 trillion -- and likely to skyrocket to $25...

China’s sovereign wealth fund, which has more than US$480 billion in assets, could cut holdings of US Treasury Bonds as they are becoming a less attractive investment, state media said on Tuesday. The Shanghai Securities News quoted Lou Jiwei, chairman of sovereign wealth fund manager China Investment Corporation (CIC), as telling a conference in Hong Kong on Monday that the US economic recovery had made other investments appealing. China has the world’s largest foreign exchange reserves and according to US government figures is the largest foreign holder of US Treasuries with US$1.16 trillion at the end of October last year,...

They were not to be called Commandos. The Brits had dibs on that name. And they had earned it. Our special forces would train in Northern Ireland at the start of the Second World War, and while they might have British trainers and instructors, they'd have to be called something else. The brass would choose a name. They chose Rangers. This outfit would also need a commander. More than a commander -- a leader, one who understood that this special force would have to be, well, special. Its members would always take the offensive, springing on the enemy as if...

The basic notion that more money, i.e., inflation, causes higher prices, i.e., price inflation, is not a uniquely Austrian view. It is a very old and commonly held view by professional economists and is presented in nearly every textbook that I have examined. This common view is often labeled the quantity theory of money. Only economists with a Mercantilist or Keynesian ideology even challenge this view. However, only Austrians can explain the current dilemma: why hasn't the massive money printing by the central banks of the world resulted in higher prices.

The following is a list, provided by the White House, of executive actions President Obama plans to take to address gun violence. 1. Issue a Presidential Memorandum to require federal agencies to make relevant data available to the federal background check system. 2. Address unnecessary legal barriers, particularly relating to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, that may prevent states from making information available to the background check system. 3. Improve incentives for states to share information with the background check system. 4. Direct the Attorney General to review categories of individuals prohibited from having a gun to make...

Check out the news anchor power-pose! Foxy blogger/journalist/libertarian commentator Michelle Fields and All-American hero Col Allen West have been brought together by Pajamas Media for a major new online project, the former US Congressman announced on Fox News' On the Record.  The new initiative -to be called NextGeneration.TV- is a reach-out to young conservatives/libertarians, sounds like a superb idea, and what a great paring: we need him out there fighting for us on the front lines -a fresh youth offensive is sorely needed on the right- and I've always said Michelle's going places: ______________________________________________________________ West: To have been the first black Republican member...

Next week, four months after terrorists killed four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will finally testify in congressional committees about what happened that day. Since Sept. 11, the Defense Department has released a timeline of that day, the Senate Homeland Security Committee has released a report, and a State Department "Accountability Review Board" set up by Clinton herself has published its own analysis. But the composite story derived from these sources raises more questions about Clinton's role on 9/11/12 than it answers. In fact, these sources cite no action at all personally taken by Clinton. Here...
