Seven of the eight people facing felony charges for their alleged actions on Dec.6 at the State Capitol are affiliated with the SEIU Healthcare Michigan union. That's the union that has taken more than $33 million from home-based caregivers in Michigan. One of the people arrested, Joshua Kersting, is the son of SEIU Healthcare Michigan President Marge Faville. Kersting's current status at SEIU Healthcare Michigan is unclear. He previously was employed by the union over which Faville presides, but apparently was transferred to a different Service Employees International Union (SEIU) affiliate a while back after his mother was accused of...

A group called Gun Control = More Crime is planning anti-gun control rallies at state capitol buildings across the nation. The event, being billed "Guns Across America," is scheduled for tomorrow, January 19. "This is going to be a peaceful picketing protest against ANY, AND ALL future gun legislation," writes Eric, the group's founder, in a Facebook post. "This is our chance to reach out to our elected officials, and tell them NO NEW GUN LAWS! 'Guns Across America' is being tailored to happen in every states capital city**, at their capital building. In my latest essays I’ve noted that there cannot be a “social teaching” unless we know what a society is. Pope Leo XIII, in his many social encyclicals, expresses the constant wisdom of the Church when he affirms the reality of society—neither a numerical aggregate nor a collective—and when he sees this reality as rooted in man’s nature, created by God. For it is God, writes Leo in Libertas praestanstissimum (1888), “who has made man for society, and has placed him in the company of others like himself, so that what was wanting to his nature, and beyond his attainment...

A masked assailant threw acid at the artistic director of Russia's Bolshoi Theater ballet troupe, an attack that Bolshoi representatives said may cause him to lose his eyesight and appeared to be linked to power struggles at the famed ballet company. “What happened with Sergei Filin was not accidental,” Ratmansky, now an artist-in-residence at the American Ballet Theater, posted on his Facebook page. “The Bolshoi has many ills. It's a disgusting cesspool, of those developing friendships with the artists, the speculators and scalpers, the half-crazy fans, ready to bite the throats of the rivals of their favorites, the cynical hackers,...

Liberals have an uncanny knack for designing solutions that do not address the problem at hand, and they're doing it again in their current effort to use the Sandy Hook shootings as fodder for promoting stringent gun control measures. It's as if President Obama and his fellow travelers lie in wait for the unfolding of big events that they can use to incite the public's passions and thereby gain popular support for otherwise unpopular government action. Liberals aren't just exploiting Sandy Hook to promote their unpopular gun agenda; some are now invoking false charges of racism to aid their...

SYDNEY, Australia -- It is for Americans and their elected representatives to determine the right response to President Obama’s proposals on gun control. I wouldn’t presume to lecture Americans on the subject. I can, however, describe what I, as prime minister of Australia, did to curb gun violence following a horrific massacre 17 years ago in the hope that it will contribute constructively to the debate in the United States. I was elected prime minister in early 1996, leading a center-right coalition. Virtually every nonurban electoral district in the country — where gun ownership was higher than elsewhere — sent...

This is about the spirit of the law, and the letter of the law. Namely, some early thoughts on how to obey the letter of the Cuomo gun ban while simultaneously spitting in the face of the spirit of the law and confounding it at every turn. The first step is realizing what the people behind this law are really after. The claim that it is a response to the attack at Sandy Hook elementary school is, of course, dishonest. This isn’t about protecting children, it is about exploiting them, and their murder, to advance the political agenda of the...

Good news everyone: Jobless claims on a weekly basis fell to a five-year low according to the Labor Department. Bad news everyone: Yet still more people remain jobless. And why is that? Because Obama doesn’t care about jobs. When you reckon out the newest jobless figures using the Obama’s best calculus, the weekly decline doesn’t mean that fewer people are unemployed. That would be asking way too much from an administration that seems phobic about private-sector job creation. “Applications for jobless benefits decreased by 37,000 to 335,000 in the week ended Jan. 12, the lowest level since the period ended...

  • At Notre Dame, a fake tragedy gets more tears than a real one

So many tears for a fake dead girl, but none for a real one. The death of Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o’s beautiful, brave girlfriend Lennay Kekua — widely reported by Sports Illustrated, CBS and many other media outlets — was all either an elaborate hoax or worse. And in response, my alma mater held the kind of emotional news conference for the fake dead girl they never held for the real one, Lizzy Seeberg.
  • Israel’s center-left parties fail to unite

JERUSALEM — Less than a week before Israel’s parliamentary elections, a fractured array of centrist parties has failed to join forces and offer a coherent alternative to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Divided by personal rivalries and the lack of a shared agenda, Netanyahu’s centrist challengers remain at odds, and two have even signaled more readiness to join a future coalition under his leadership than unite with each other. While Netanyahu has focused on what he portrays as his ability to defend Israel militarily and diplomatically, his centrist opponents are trying to steer the campaign to other issues, targeting potential voters...

The Obama administration's current warpath against so-called "gun violence" -- which is Newspeak for non-violence committed by non-criminals with their non-illegal private property -- is a brazen challenge to America's manhood. The progressives have apparently decided that this is the moment when they can play their ultimate authoritarian hand, and let the chips fall where they may. They believe, in other words, that this is the moment when they may be able to break America at last, one way or another. Through Obama's forceful, smug insistence on taking action in defiance of Congress, along with the aggressive urging to do...
  • If a Catholic Marries a Non-Christian, How is it a Sacrament?

Q: An unbaptized person can’t receive any of the other sacraments unless he gets baptized first, right? So how is it possible for a Catholic to marry a non-Christian in a Catholic ceremony? I don’t see how the non-Christian spouse can be receiving the sacrament of matrimony, if he’s never received the sacrament of baptism! Is the marriage a sacrament for the Catholic but not for the non-Christian? How does this work? –Ashley A: It’s a very astute observation! By thinking it through logically, Ashley has spotted a genuine theological/canonical quandary.

In the last 24 hours, the media have scrutinized Notre Dame All-American linebacker Manti Te'o's life more completely than they did President Barack Obama's in the last eight years. And that is shameful -- on both counts. The crux of the Te'o story, of course, is whether Te'o conspired to fabricate his seemingly tragic relationship with imaginary girlfriend Lennay Kekua or whether he is a victim of a cruel hoax. Much is at stake -- or so we are told. If Te'o proves to be a willing participant in a hoax, NFL scouts will question his character and downgrade his stock in the upcoming NFL draft. For those who care, Deadspin has some excellent reporting on this story -- better reporting, in fact, than anyone in the major media has done on that other Hawaiian fabricator of girlfriends, Barack Obama. Although I and others in the blogosphere had made the case early on that the girlfriends Obama wrote about in his memoir Dreams from My Father were not real, the major media ran from the story. To see how far and fast they ran, please check out my AT articles on the subject: "What Does 'Composite Girl' Tell Us About Obama" and "Did Maraniss Commit Fraud to Protect Obama." The Deadspin reporters rightly chastise a "compliant press" for buying into "Notre Dame's mythmaking," but in the press's defense, who would think it necessary to vet a linebacker? There is no excuse for how our media have failed to vet the president.
