A common media theme since the Republicans took over the House of Representatives in January 2011 has been that former President Ronald Reagan and former Speaker of the House Tip O’Neill were great legislative partners despite being from different parties. Syndicated columnist Pat Buchanan threw some cold water on this notion on PBS’s McLaughlin Group Friday saying, “There’s a lot of myth about Tip O’Neill and Ronald Reagan working together. They did not" (video follows with transcript and commentary): Pat Buchanan: 'There’s a Lot of Myth About Tip O’Neill and Reagan Working Together. They Did Not' PAT BUCHANAN: There’s a...

I am not an expert on gun types, although I have shot many and know the ones I have shot, so don't kill the messenger if I mess this thread up! My husband went to Dicks Sporting Goods and Herb Phillipson's in search of a Mossberg 702 or a Rueger 10 Flash 22, both 22 calibre's with 10 round clips and both stores were all out. He asked if there was a run on what my husband called "a gun he wished to buy for his daughter." Both store managers told him their corporate offices made them send all of...

California is losing its children. After decades of simultaneously worrying about and cashing in on its ever-growing population, the Golden State now awaits a new challenge: too few children and, eventually, too few skilled and able-bodied workers. "Kids are no longer overrunning us. Now they're in short supply," said Dowell Myers, a demographer at the University of Southern California. "It changes the priorities for the state." The number of California babies born each year began dropping steadily in 2007, according to state public health records, but the birthrate began slowing years before. From 2002 to 2011, there was a statewide...

A new study of fertility in Germany shows that the birth rate in the country continues to be low, but not because of the commonly cited reasons of the expense of raising a child or the lack of space in kindergartens. The number remains sobering: 1.36 are born on average for every German woman. The cliche of a well-educated, but single and childless woman is still a common scenario. The question of why the birth rate in Germany is so low was posed by Federal Institute for Population Research in a new study. The institute examined the emotional state of...

A 12-gauge shotgun loaded with bird shot accidentally discharged Saturday when the owner opened its case at a gun show at the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, injuring a retired sheriff's deputy and two other people, police said. The gun owner, a 36-year-old man from Wilmington, North Carolina, was carrying the weapon through security at the show entrance and was unfastening the case on a table, authorities said. The owner planned to sell the shotgun at the show. The deputy suffered a slight injury to his hand and was treated and released at a local hospital, said Joel Keith,...

I have no doubt that Jeff Jacoby’s concern about America is genuine (“Beware the baby bust generation,” Op-ed, Dec. 16). However, I think his panic is misplaced. For one, the birth rate during the baby boom was the aberration. In the late 1970s, America’s total fertility rate was at its lowest, at 1.79 births per woman. It inched back up in the following three decades, and has only recently declined again, to about 1.9. Most likely, this is a function of the economy, and the rate will rise again. The average American woman wants two children — unchanged from the...

This week, people were shocked when the Drudge Report posted a giant picture of Hitler over a headline speculating that the White House will proceed with executive orders to limit access to firearms. The proposed orders are exceedingly tame, but Drudge’s reaction is actually a common conservative response to any invocation of gun control. The NRA, Fox News, Fox News (again), Alex Jones, email chains, Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher, Gun Owners of America, etc., all agree that gun control was critical to Hitler’s rise to power. Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (“America’s most aggressive defender of firearms ownership”)...

A Bulgarian politician today survived an extraordinary assassination attempt when a man stormed the stage and held a gun to his head as he was giving a speech. Fortunately for Ahmed Dogan, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, the weapon misfired giving him time to react and hit the would-be assassin's hand out of the way. Before he could attempt a second shot the unidentified suspect was tackled to the ground by security guards and delegates attending the conference in Sofia. In a fortuitous Shot Show meeting in the Press Room, I had an excellent conversation with Robert Farago, publisher of “The Truth About Guns”, he proposed an interesting idea from an East Coast perspective: “If a storm rolls through my area and things get bad enough that looters are a serious risk, my neighbors not only do not have the skills to protect our neighborhood – they don’t have the tools.” Storing food specifically for neighbors who do not prepare is something we already advise and teach – the idea of storing firearms that your neighbors can use to help...

After fifth grade, he found, student assessment becomes a matter of “a teacher’s subjective assessment of the student’s performance,” and is further removed from the guidance of objective test results. Teachers, he says, tend to assess students on non-cognitive, “socio-emotional skills.” This has had a significant impact on boys’ later achievement because, while objective test scores are important, it is teacher-assigned grades that determine a child’s future with class placement, high school graduation and college admissibility. Eliminating the factor of “non-cognitive skills…almost eliminates the estimated gender gap in reading grades,” Cornwell found. He said he found it “surprising” that...

Following in the footsteps of the campaign you built, Organizing for Action will be an unparalleled force in American politics. It will work to turn our shared values into legislative action -- and it'll empower the next generation of leaders in our movement. Michelle recorded a video to tell you more about the new organization -- take a look and let OFA know you're in: http://my.barackobama.com/Organizing-for-Action We may have started this as a long shot presidential primary campaign in 2007, but it's always been about more than just winning...

Mexico's federal government may limit the amount of debt and the size of deficits that states and municipalities accumulate, as local debt levels have doubled in recent years and a handful of governments have defaulted on debt payments. The proposal is tricky to maneuver because Mexican states are independent federal entities, complete with their own constitutions, and as such they may tap as much nonguaranteed debt as they like. The states do require congressional approval to issue long-term debt backed by their shares of federal tax revenue. Local Mexican governments have limited independent revenue sources, relying instead on transfers from...

President Barack Obama's political operation began asking its wide network of backers Thursday to voice their support for the president's gun violence proposals, the first step in Obama for America's post-campaign iteration. An email from Obama's 2012 campaign manager Jim Messina asks supporters to "stand with President Obama in tackling this critical issue," directing readers to a webpage with a button to express support for Obama's plan, which includes executive actions and legislative proposals to curb gun violence. The appeal comes as Obama for America, the operation formed in 2007 to elect Obama to the White House, transitions from a...

U.S. Representative Steve Israel (D-Huntington, N.Y.) plans to propose a ban on creating gun magazines with 3-D printers. The bill is still in the drafting stage, but Israel intends to make sure existing legislation includes consideration for this new kind of homemade firearm. Last month, Rep. Israel proposed to renew the Undetectable Firearms Act, which was adopted in 1988 and will expire in December of this year. Israel suggested that the act, which requires all guns to be detectable by such devices as X-ray machines and metal detectors, is more relevant than ever.

Dear Freepers This is a draft of something I am planning for a wider distribution. Please take a look at it. In the past you have given me great feedback on typos and grammar corrections which I am thankful for, but I can also take feedback on concepts or things that need clarification. The group this is intended for I assume knows how to google so I am not going to document anything as everything in here should be common knowledge or easily web searched. Thank you in advance. All the best... CGTGOC Why Obama is Different On the eve...

SCOTTBASE, Antarctica (AP) — Talk about whisky on ice: Three bottles of rare, 19th century Scotch found beneath the floor boards of Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackelton's abandoned expedition base were returned to the polar continent Saturday after a distiller flew them to Scotland to recreate the long-lost recipe. But not even New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, who personally returned the stash, got a taste of the contents of the bottles of Mackinlay's whisky, which were rediscovered 102 years after the explorer was forced to leave them behind. "I think we're all tempted to crack it open and have a...

A freshman state senator from Broken Arrow has filed legislation challenging the federal government's authority to regulate weapons in any way. Sen. Nathan Dahm's Senate Bill 548 says that "the 2nd Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms free from infringement; that federal acts, laws, orders, rules, regulations, bans, or registration requirements regarding firearms constitute an infringement on the individual right, are not authorized by the Constitution of the United States and violate its true meaning and intent as given by the founders and ratifiers, and are hereby declared to be invalid in the State of Oklahoma,...
