  • Gun buyback in downtown Seattle draws big crowd (funded by Amazon.com)

Hundreds of people showed up Saturday morning for a gun buyback in Seattle. One man even brought a rocket launcher. He said it had already been used and could not do any harm. Mason Vranish said he bought it from a man for $100, but within seconds police took it off his hands. “Their reason was even though it was single time use item it is still military property concern that a soldier had stolen it from the base or whatever and it wasn't theirs to own... so it somehow ended up in the civilian market illegally,” said Vranish. Officers...

In one of the 23 executive actions on gun control signed this month, President Obama instructed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other federal science agencies to conduct research into the causes and prevention of gun violence. He called on Congress to aid that effort by providing $10 million for the C.D.C. in the next budget round and $20 million to expand the federal reporting system on violent deaths to all 50 states, from the current 18. That Mr. Obama had to make such a decree at all is a measure of the power of the gun lobby,...

By RYAN SMITH America has been creeping closer and closer to allowing women in combat, so Wednesday's news that the decision has now been made is not a surprise. It appears that female soldiers will be allowed on the battlefield but not in the infantry. Yet it is a distinction without much difference: Infantry units serve side-by-side in combat with artillery, engineers, drivers, medics...

Today's feature is director King Vidor's final film "Solomon and Sheba". It's not the most accurate Biblical epic made but it does make a great vehicle for the gorgeous Gina Lollobrigida(of whom I am a big fan) back in her prime. Interestingly enough, Solomon was originally played by Tyrone Power but he died during filming and Yul Brynner replaced him. Supposedly, Power's footage appears in some scenes though I do not know which one. As with all Hollywood Bible pics, enjoy but read the book also-1 Kings 10:1-13 and 2 Chronicles 9:1-12

The highly ranked military guards battalion, known for performing drill demonstrations at major events, are growing breasts on just one side of their bodies, Medical Daily reported. The soldiers – part of the Wachbataillon unit – are suffering from a condition called one-sided gynecomastia, and it’s a result of how the soldiers are performing their drills. Seventy-four percent of the soldiers have been diagnosed with gynecomastia, after complaining of growths on the left side of their bodies.

This was deemed to be insecure a decade ago and was replaced by the WPA and, later, the WPA2 security standard. Someone in "listening range" of a wi-fi hotspot using the WEP encryption standard could, potentially, break into the network relatively easily and disrupt it. Many internet service providers (ISP) still provide WEP as the default, but they are now required to also provide WPA. So it is a good idea to insure that your...

The Geneva Convention’s classification of military chaplains as noncombatants has traditionally been interpreted in the United States to mean that chaplains normally do not carry weapons. This often puts them in precarious positions when they are in war zones. Over four hundred chaplains have been killed in the line of duty. Catholic chaplains are especially exposed to dangerous situations by their obligation to administer Absolution and Anointing. They have received every kind of decoration for valor, and seven have been awarded the Medal of Honor. All four chaplains awarded the Medal since the Civil War have been Catholic. Among them,...

WASHINGTON -- A judge has been holding secret hearings in the case of the man convicted in the 2001 killing of Chandra Levy, the latest twist in a high-profile murder that went unsolved for years and captivated the public because of the intern's romantic relationship with a California congressman. The meetings, held sporadically behind closed doors at the courthouse over the last several weeks, raise questions about what comes next in a criminal case that appeared resolved by the 2010 conviction of Ingmar Guandique. The illegal immigrant from El Salvador is now serving a 60-year prison sentence in Levy's death,...
  • McCain to GOP: Accept path to citizenship In immigration-"reform" bill

Yes John, creating millions of new Democrat voters demanding free stuff is absolutely what the GOP needs - Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said that the Republican Party has to accept a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants as part of an immigration-reform package. McCain said on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday that a group of bipartisan senators would be announcing “principles” on immigration reform this week, which he said was similar to a plan unveiled during President George W. Bush’s second term that ultimately failed. McCain said there’s one big reason that his party has to loosen its opposition to providing...

Moving a step closer to completing its nuclear triad, India today successfully test-fired a ballistic missile, wit a strike range of around 1500 kilometres, from an underwater platform in Bay of Bengal. "The medium range K-5 ballistic missile was test-fired successfully today from an underwater pontoon and all parameters of the test firing were met," DRDO chief VK Saraswat told PTI from the undisclosed test area. Nuclear triad is the ability to fire nuclear-tipped missiles from land, air and sea. Saraswat said that the development phase of the K-5 missile, which is a submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), was over and...

BAMAKO/SEVARE, Mali (Reuters) - French and Malian troops were on Sunday restoring government control over the fabled Saharan trading town of Timbuktu, the latest gain in a fast-moving French-led offensive against al Qaeda-allied fighters occupying northern Mali. The Islamist militant rebels have pulled back northwards to avoid relentless French air strikes that have destroyed their bases, vehicles and weapons, allowing French and Malian troops to advance rapidly with air support and armored vehicles. A Malian military source told Reuters the French and Malian forces reached "the gates of Timbuktu" late on Saturday without meeting resistance from the Islamist insurgents who...
  • Obama suggests Republicans unwilling to compromise in gun control debate

President Obama is suggesting that House Republicans on the issue of gun control appear neither willing to work with him nor listen to the American public on the issue. “The House Republican majority is made up mostly of members who are in sharply gerrymandered districts that are very safely Republican and may not feel compelled to pay attention to broad-based public opinion, because what they're really concerned about is the opinions of their specific Republican constituencies,” the president said in an interview with The New Republic. Obama also said he can get 50 percent of public support for many of...

Andre Barbosa may soon have to pack up and leave the palatial home he has been occupying in Boca Raton, Florida. The 23-year-old Brazilian national has been squatting at the $2.5million waterfront estate on Golden Harbour Drive since the summer, infuriating all the neighbors in the process. Barbosa, originally from the neighboring Pompano Beach, has been threatening to use an obscure real estate law that allows people to claim a property as their own if they stay there for seven years. No one witnessed Barbosa breaking into the 7,522-squae foot, five-bedroom, six-bathroom waterfront home, so he cannot be arrested. But...
