A Brief Treatise on the Fruits of the Holy SpiritBy: Msgr. Charles Pope There was a wonderful excursus on the Church as the Body of Christ in the Sunday readings. Would that we might better appreciate the diversity of gifts in the Church today instead of being fearful or dismissive of gifts that we appreciate less. As a pastor, I have come to appreciate that people find their way to God in many and diverse ways and that when the Church permits diversity we ought respectfully rejoice in even in the ways we do not personally prefer.I want to...

The Seattle Police Department held its first gun buyback event since the 1990s this weekend, offering people gift cards for their firearms. However, dozens of private buyers showed up in an effort to acquire the guns using the so-called gun show loophole, which allows guns to be sold without a background check. Hundreds of people showed up Saturday morning to give their rifles and shotguns as well as semi-automatic rifles to police in exchange for gift cards worth $100 and $200 respectively, KING 5 reports. The police planned to destroy the guns and use them as rebar in local construction...

One World Trade Center is getting its mouth washed out with soap. A day after the Daily News exposed the racist and sexist graffiti inside a building that’s supposed to symbolize national unity, workers were ordered to clean the mess and paint over the filth. Meanwhile, Port Authority police launched an investigation—and dispatched officers with cameras to the men’s rooms Monday to take pictures of the heinous scrawls. They’ll hit the ladies’ rooms in the still-under-construction building on Tuesday. …

They Voted for Hitler in Austria (and He Put In Gun Controls) by Kitty Werthmann What I am about to tell you is something you’ve probably never heard or will ever read in history books. I believe that I am an eyewitness to history. I cannot tell you that Hitler took Austria by tanks and guns; it would distort history. We elected him by a landslide – 98% of the vote. I’ve never read that in any American publications. Everyone thinks that Hitler just rolled in with his tanks and took Austria by force. In 1938, Austria was in deep...

As the results of a new state income tax in California, a number of high-income earning individuals and small businesses are considering leaving the state. In November, California residents voted to pass Proposition 30 into law. The law increase state income tax rates for the highest income earners. With the new law in effect, the highest earners—those making more than $250,000 per year—now pay state income tax of 13.3 percent. While the increase in tax is expected to net California an additional $6 billion in revenue annually, the high-income earners affected by the change are not happy about it. …...

WASHINGTON — Sen. Rand Paul told an off-the-record meeting of conservative donors and powerbrokers Monday that he plans to file a bill that would ban sending F-16 fighter jets to Egypt. "The crowed loved it," a source told BuzzFeed. Last year, Lockheed Martin delivered 20 F-16 fighter jets to Egypt as part of $1.3 billion in military aid from the U.S. government, The New York Times reported. Paul has expressed concern for the practice in the past — but his remarks via Skype to the so-called "Monday Meeting" in New York City showed even firmer support by the Kentucky senator...

The Hill has bad news for businessmen as the second term of Barack Obama begins, and … more bad news. First, businesses foresee a flood of regulations as Obama uses the executive branch to push an agenda that has no chance of getting through Congress: President Obama has begun to wield the power of the executive to press forward with a second-term agenda that delights the left and terrifies the right. When he said "we must act" in his inaugural address last week, liberals cheered him on, and conservatives saw that the electoral earthquake of November is likely to be followed...

Political trends come and go in response to events. Gun control was the rage during the Clinton administration, but over the past decade or so it became an obsolete cause. After the horrific crimes in Newtown and Aurora, though, it's staging a comeback. One thing hasn't changed: The agenda includes mostly measures that will have little or no effect on the problems they are supposed to address. They are Potemkin remedies—presentable facades with empty space behind them. This is something that supporters as well as opponents labor to conceal. Treating them as serious allows them both to posture for their...

Social Security will eventually hit the wall, but Social Security Disability Insurance may hit the wall even before Obama heads off to a permanent vacation on the many golf courses of Hawaii or rewrites the Living Constitution to become Emperor of Post-America. Over the long term, Social Security and Medicare have promised tens of trillions of dollars more in benefits than the nation can pay for under current policies. But Social SecurityÂ’s disability trust fund is in even worse shape, and current estimates say by 2016 it wonÂ’t have enough money to pay full benefits. The fiscal security of the disability...

In kicking the proverbial can down the road, Congressional leaders acquiesced to the demand that wealthier Americans pay higher taxes. The higher taxes came in the form of a higher maximum tax rate on those individuals making more than $400,000 and the loss of the favorable tax treatment accorded dividend and capital gains income. Such a strategy pandered to the majority of Americans who don’t believe they are “rich,” but fall into the great “middle class” which the politicians claimed they were protecting. In the meantime, those very politicians have deferred dealing with the real issue that is out of...

Parents of children killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School appeared before a subcommittee of the Connecticut Legislature on Monday to speak about gun control. While some used the platform to promote stricter firearms legislation, at least one parent became passionate, claiming that there are more than enough laws on the books, that current regulations simply need to be enforced and that the nation needs to embrace personal responsibility. Mark Mattioli, whose six-year-old son James perished inside of the school, testified that a plethora of new gun laws isn’t the answer and that, instead, personal responsibility, accountability and civility are the...

The mainstream media bullied professional golfer Phil Mickelson into apologizing for criticizing California's high taxes and threatening to leave the state because of California's high income tax rate. But California's high taxes have been forcing many athletes--including those far from the limelight and who have not made as much money as Mickelson--to leave the state for fiscal reasons. Tiger Woods said he left California because of high taxes in 1996. According to the Wall Street Journal, Woods' net savings over those 16 years come to about $100 million. Mickelson, meanwhile, earned nearly $60.7 million last year. After Proposition 30, Mickelson...

The report -- which is not scheduled for publication until 2014 -- was leaked by someone involved in the IPCC’s review process, and is available for download online. Each has overstated the rise in temperature that Earth actually experienced.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Three months after Superstorm Sandy ravaged coastal areas in much of the Northeast, Congress on Monday sent a $50.5 billion emergency relief measure for storm victims to President Barack Obama for his signature. "I commend Congress for giving families and businesses the help they deserve, and I will sign this bill into law as soon as it hits my desk," Obama said in a statement late Monday. Despite opposition from conservatives concerned about adding billions of dollars more to the nation's debt, the Senate cleared the long-delayed bill, 62-36, after House Republicans had stripped it earlier this...

Fleeing Islamist insurgents burnt two buildings containing priceless books as French-led troops approached al-Qaida-allied fighters on Saturday torched two buildings that held the manuscripts, some of which dated back to the 13th century. They also burned down the town hall, the governor's office and an MP's residence, and shot dead a man who was celebrating the arrival of the French military. French troops and the Malian army reached the gates of Timbuktu on Saturday and secured the town's airport. But they appear to have got there too late to rescue the leather-bound manuscripts that were a unique record of sub-Saharan...

New DARPA program seeks performers for transient electronics demonstration The sophisticated electronics used by war-fighters in everything from radios, remote sensors and even phones can now be made at such a low cost that they are pervasive throughout the battlefield. These electronics have become necessary for operations, but it is almost impossible to track and recover every device. At the end of operations, these electronics are often found scattered across the battlefield and might be captured by the enemy and re-purposed or studied to compromise DoD’s strategic technological advantage.

Katie Pavlich is aghast, calling it the “worst” piece of commentary in the week of the 40th anniversary of Roe v Wade: During a segment last week, Toure went on what he called an abortion rant in which he thanked God and country abortion was there to “save him” at a time when taking care of a baby and becoming a father would have been inconvenient for him. He also refers to abortion as a “safety net.” … Got that? Toure was willing to end the life of an unborn child so his own life could remain convenient and less...
