On his talk show ‘Real Time with Bill Maher,’ Bill Maher explained how Sarah Palin being fired from Fox News may not be the somewhat comforting news that liberals were enjoying. Maher instead likens Palin to other axed Fox News personality, Glenn Beck. After exiting Fox News, Beck took "patented brand of apocalyptic race baiting" (according to Maher) and went on to create his own web series that charges people $10 a month. Last year, Beck made $80 million, landing him in seventh place on the Forbes wealthiest celebrities. Thus, Maher slams such pundits as “con men.” Says Maher, "They...

La Paz, Bolivia, Feb 4, 2013 / 12:09 pm (CNA).- The largest statue of the Virgin Mary in the world, dedicated to Our Lady of Socavon, was inaugurated at a Feb. 1 ceremony in the city of Oruro, Bolivia. Rolando Rocha, the lead sculptor for the project, told reporters that more than simply “a work of engineering and art,” the monument “is an act of faith that strengthens our traditions.” Towering at 149 feet, the statue is located on a 12,000-foot mountain south of La Paz, the country’s second largest city. It stands 22 feet taller than the Christ the...

In 2011, gun owners in the United States outnumbered hunters by 5 to 1. There were 13.7 million hunters in the United States over age 16 -- 12.7 million of whom used rifles, shotguns or handguns for hunting, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That means hunters constituted only 15.9 to 18.1 percent of the estimated 70-80 million gun owners in the U.S. in 2011 -- the latest year for which statistics are available. In a Dec. 28 national report, USF&W said 13.7 million individuals over age 16 self-identified as hunters, and that 12.7 million used guns (shotguns,...

SHARONVILLE, OH (FOX19) - Employees at Target World in Sharonville say guns sales have been like nothing they've ever seen before. "You can't take away people's rights without people fighting back," says David Drury, a Target World employee. The increase in sales started just after the Newtown, Connecticut school shootings. "The boom has been pretty incredible. People are wanting to protect their rights while they have them and people are scared. They don't want their rights to be eroded," said Drury. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Americans support Social Security and are willing to pay more to preserve and even improve benefits, according to a new survey released today by the nonpartisan National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI). The new study, Strengthening Social Security: What Do Americans Want?, finds a sharp contrast between what Americans say they want and changes being discussed in Washington, such as cutting benefits by using a “chained” Consumer Price Index to determine Social Security’s cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Large majorities of Americans, both Republicans and Democrats, agree on ways to strengthen Social Security — without cutting benefits. Fully 74%...

Violence and bizarre aggressive behaviors among young male elephants has increased dramatically over the course of a few decades. A team of researchers, trauma experts and neuropsychologists among them, studied the causes and found a way to resolve the elephant violence. Their findings can help us understand why we need mature men leading boys to manhood and to guide for those coming into renewed manhood following the overthrow of repressive regimes. The lessons require connecting three dots. 1. The social development systems of male elephants. 2. The abuse of women in oppressive regimes. 3. Boy Gangs – A poor substitute...

Steven Chu had arranged to have the Superbowl completely powered by solar panels as a final act of demonstrating the reliability and feasibility of solar power. To accomplish it, he had asked the Food Stamp President to request Congress to change the day/night ratio to 80% daylight versus 20% night to support the increased light requirements. The Republicans laughed off the request and the resultant unexpected darkness rendered the solar panels inoperable. The battery and generator backups proved to be up to...

The most accurate crime statistics are on murders. When proponents of infringements on the Second Amendment talk about murders, they often claim that murders by strangers are only a small percentage of the total, often about one quarter. This statistic is misleading, because it implies that people that you are close to are the most likely to murder you. The largest category of victim to murderer is unknown. That is 44 percent of the murders reported to the FBI. The next largest category is acquaintance. It is 21 percent of murderers. The misleading part is that all people who...

Now here comes Rove’s group, American Crossroads, pledging untold millions towards electing the most allegedly “electable” candidate in Republican primaries. No more Akins — and maybe no more Marco Rubios, Rand Pauls, and Ted...

Author Zac Unger was originally drawn to the arctic circle to write a “mournful elegy” about how global warming was decimating the polar bear populations. He was surprised to find that the polar bears were not in such dire straits after all. “There are far more polar bears alive today than there were 40 years ago,” Unger told NPR in an interview about his new book, “Never Look a Polar Bear in The Eye.” “There are about 25,000 polar bears alive today worldwide. In 1973, there was a global hunting ban. So once hunting was dramatically reduced, the population exploded.”

Russia does not fit standards of Western democracy again 04.02.2013 Last week, Human Rights Watch presented World Report 2013. The report focused on the human rights situations in more than 90 countries of the world in 2012. Of 665 pages of the report, ten are devoted to Russia. An attempt to find at last something positive about our country on those ten pages will suffer a rapid fiasco. Human Rights Watch Director for Europe and Central Asia, Hugh Williamson, gave the following assessment: "Last year was the worst one in terms of the situation with human rights in Russia in...

Dan from Squirrel Hill's Blog Argentina just set price controls on food – let’s see what happens as a result Prices are not just random numbers that get picked out of thin air. Instead, prices communicate information about supply and demand. So when the supply and/or demand situation changes, it makes perfect sense that the price would change accordingly.Economic theory predicts that when the government sets the price of something lower than the supply/demand equilibrium, the demand will exceed the supply, which is the definition of a shortage. More than 4,000 years of various examples of price controls from all over...

Nearly Half Of American Families Live On The Edge Of Financial Ruin Mandi WoodruffFebruary 4, 2013, 1:19 PM In the past few years, Americans have learned a thing or two about how quickly disaster can strike. And with each Hurricane Sandy, housing crisis, and stock market crash that rocks our world, we're faced with the realization that many of us simply aren't prepared for the worst. A sobering new report by the Corporation for Enterprise Development shows nearly half of U.S. households (132.1 million people) don't have enough savings to weather emergencies, or finance long-term needs like college tuition, health...

My book—which I entitled Sex and God at Yale—shows that Yale’s liberals are still actively working to refashion American politics and culture. But the devil is in the details, and it’s safe to say that there are things happening at Yale today that Buckley could scarcely have even imagined in 1951. While the Yale of Buckley’s book marginalized or undermined religious faith in the classroom, my book tells of a classmate who was given approval to create an art object out of what she claimed was blood and tissue from self-induced abortions. And while the Yale of Buckley’s book was...

Boomer Esiason, the former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback and co-host "The NFL Today" on CBS, said Beyonce's halftime performance may have been responsible for the 34-minute blackout during Sunday's Super Bowl between Baltimore and San Francisco. “Beyonce blew the electric in the Superdome twice, I’m told, during her rehearsals during the week," Esiason said on Monday on his radio show. Esiason recalled there was a buzzing sound in the Superdome shortly after Beyonce's halftime show. On his "Boomer & Carton" radio show, Esiason said about "five or six minutes prior to" the "the breaker going," Kevin Harlan, a CBS announcer who...
