According to the state DOJ, that's nearly 40,000 handguns and assault weapons currently in circulation that shouldn't be. As Capitol Hill begins to debate a raft of anti-gun violence measures -- ranging from gun control bills to proposals to improve screening and the mental health system -- California officials are trying to take matters into their own hands. After Lindley testified at a hearing last week that his office lacks enough staff to confiscate weapons from felons and the mentally ill -- which are recorded in the state's Armed Prohibited Persons database -- lawmakers are fast-tracking a bill that would...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The government has authorized the killing of American citizens as part of its controversial drone campaign against al Qaeda even without intelligence that such Americans are actively plotting to attack a U.S. target, according to a Justice Department memo. The unclassified memo, first obtained by NBC News, argues that drone strikes are justified under American law if a targeted U.S. citizen had "recently" been involved in "activities" posing a possible threat and provided that there is no evidence suggesting the individual "renounced or abandoned" such activities. The document was disclosed as a bipartisan group of U.S. senators...

Beaurat Obama wants universal registration of all firearms in America. He says it’s “common sense” to register all firearms and the “majority” of firearms owners agree with him. He polls his people and tells us we think that way too. The man agglomerates numbers in biased and prejudiced surveys. He twists the findings into complementary terms showing just how perfect his intuition is when adducing the American public’s thinking. He almost never gets plastered for trying to pull the wool over the American people’s eyes. Not ever, since the mid-term elections in his first term, has he admitted the American...

WASHINGTON — Jon Favreau's career took off when, at age 23, he interrupted U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama during a speech rehearsal to offer some suggestions for improvement. That cheeky move led to a seven-year tour as Obama's lead speechwriter, an assignment that ends March 1 as Favreau considers trying his hand at another form of drama — as a screenwriter, perhaps in Los Angeles. The departure subtracts a vivid personality from the president's operation, defined since the beginning by Obama's spoken words and the team that wrote them. After Favreau landed in the White House four years ago, he...

Bill Bolling, a Republican, sided with them on Monday to break a party-line 20-20 tie. Bolling voted for a Democratic amendment that delayed the voter ID changes to July 2014. It was the first tie-breaking vote of the 2013 session since he withdrew his GOP gubernatorial bid last fall, pledging a new independence from his party. Advertisement The bill, sponsored by Sen. While the number of converts remains relatively small in France, yearly conversions to Islam have doubled in the past 25 years, experts say, presenting a growing challenge for France, where government and public attitudes toward Islam are awkward and sometimes hostile. French antiterrorism officials have been warning for years that converts represent a critical element of the terrorist threat in Europe, because they have Western passports and do not stand out. In October, the French police conducted a series of antiterrorism raids across France, resulting in the arrests of 12 people, including at least three French citizens who had recently...

At the top of the list of changes to gun transaction restrictions the left has bleated on for years is what they have deceptively labelled "Closing The Gunshow Loophole". President Obama is urging another short-term fix to avoid automatic spending cuts set to hit March 1, scheduling a public statement at the White House Tuesday where he will call on Congress to come up with tens of billions of dollars in spending cuts and tax revenue. The call is the latest effort to kick the can on a deadline set by Congress in the summer of 2011. What do the despised rich, smart kids, and fallen heroes have in common? They are all victims of the progressive movement. When being rich is finally made synonymous with undeserved privilege, individual achievement in other areas will be targeted. When success is considered unfair, then being unsuccessful will be called unfair and undeserved. And those of means and ability who reject this burden will be demonized. Progressives have turned society against conservatives who are successful through business; they claim that the rich have hoarded the profits that they made on the backs of the public. A map of estimated illegal immigrant population, state by state. ~snip~ Estimating where exactly illegal immigrants reside in the United States is tricky, but the Pew Hispanic Center did just that in 2011 for each state. Although California has the highest number of illegal immigrants, Nevada has the largest proportion of illegal immigrants—7.2 percent of the state population and as much as 10 percent of its workforce. A new coalition of law-enforcement officials and liberty-minded organizations led by former Arizona Sheriff Richard Mack is joining forces to defend freedom, with goals that include supporting the hundreds of constitutional sheriffs across America who promise to defend the rights of their constituents from the Obama administration’s lawless assault on the Constitution. As one of its primary projects, the alliance is sending letters to every sheriff in the United States to find out and publicize where they stand on the Second Amendment. Another key aim of the coalition is to recruit more chief law-enforcement officers — particularly sheriffs, but state...

You will be rewarded by encountering heroic sanctity, not through the hagiographic distancing of centuries, but in the searing light and existential detail of a time still very much our own. It is an opportunity to be with someone who loved God the way so many of us...

SOUTH EL MONTE - An innocent game of tug-of-war turned tragic Monday afternoon when two South El Monte High School students had their fingers severed. Tug-of-war is a competitive game in which two teams pull, or tug, on a rope in opposite directions in a show of strength. The students, a boy and a girl, were participating in the lunchtime Spirit Week activity celebrating homecoming when they were injured, El Monte Union High School District Assistant Superintendent Edward Zuniga said. Neither he nor other district officials would release the students' names or ages. The girl is a senior and varsity...
