  • US Initial Jobless Claims Rise By 4,000 To 352,000 As Hiring Remains Modest

International Business Times ^ | 04/18/2013 | By Moran Zhang
The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits rose last week, signaling little improvement in a soft U.S. labor market, though broadly in line with analyst expectations. In the week ended April 13, applications for unemployment insurance payments increased by 4,000 to 352,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That's the highest level in two months. Economists surveyed by Reuters expected claims to rise to 350,000 from the prior week's upwardly revised figure of 348,000. The four-week moving average, which normally provides a better indication of the underlying trend in labor markets than the weekly number of jobless claims,...

Oh irony, oh hypocrisy! Joe Scarborough opened today's Morning Joe by singing the praises of NBC's Pete Williams for not jumping onto the story that other news outlets were reporting yesterday that an arrest had been made in the Boston Marathon bombing. Scarborough condemned journalists "far more interested in getting it first than getting it right." But mere minutes later, Scarborough accused former Republican congressman Chris Cox of "lying," in his role as NRA spokesman. Just one problen, as Scarborough had to admit later in the show: he had the wrong Chris Cox. Check back soon for the video.

A WIT AND A SEER WE are often very glib and confident in our generalizations about the characteristics of the English race, - not noting, perhaps not caring to note when the mood for generalization is upon us, how many individuals of that race escape our classification and show what qualities they please. Under which characteristic of that sturdy and for the most part matter-of-fact people do we place its extraordinary fecundity in every kind of individual genius? Is Shakespeare a typical product, or is he not, - or has the race changed since the sunny and open times of...

"Obama has unscheduled meeting with foreign minister"An expert on terrorism says the Saudi national who was the original “person of interest” in connection with Monday’s Boston Marathon bombing is going to be deported from the U.S. next week. The foreign student from Revere, Mass., is identified as 20-year-old Abdul Rahman Ali Alharbi. “I just learned from my own sources that he is now going to be deported on national security grounds next Tuesday, which is very unusual,” Steve Emerson of the Investigative Project on Terrorism told Sean Hannity of Fox News Wednesday night. The Reuters news agency reported President Barack...

Remember the Liberal mantra following the 2000 and 2004 elections? Recount, Recount, RECOUNT!!! Florida in 2000 went recount crazy to the extent that there was live aerial coverage of a truck delivering ballots to Tallahassee. Of course, what the Left really meant was recounting must continue until a democrat goes into the lead and then all recounting must halt immediately. And since down in Venezuela the leftwing Nicolas Maduro won the presidency narrowly by massive vote fraud, there are demands for a recount. But guess what? DUmmie hypocrisy is on full display in this THREAD, "(Capriles) Venezuelan candidate demands...

Suddenly, it seems that the terror attack on our consulate in Benghazi last September may become relevant all over again. Yesterday afternoon, CBS’ Sharyl Attkisson reported that a number of whistleblowers had emerged to talk to the House Oversight Committee, in news that may have slipped under the radar of other emerging (and non-emerging) developments in the Boston Marathon attack story: "CBS News has learned that multiple new whistleblowers are privately speaking to investigators with the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee regarding the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attacks on the U.S. compounds in Benghazi, Libya." "The nature of the...

(Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week, which could further allay fears of a major setback in the labor market recovery. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 4,000 to a seasonally adjusted 352,000 the Labor Department said on Thursday. The prior week's number was revised to show 2,000 more applications than previously reported. The four-week moving average for new claims, a better measure of labor market trends, rose 2,750 to 361,250.

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes – six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either. Barack Obama is a lame duck president. Nobody...

He only said what many clear-minded Americans likely think about our federal government’s dangerously stupid Middle Eastern visa and immigration policies, but boy did it get the leftist, Islamophile drones riled up! Author, WorldNetDaily (WND) columnist and national conservative commentator, Erik Rush, posted a comment on Twitter in the wake of the Boston bombings, and it led to a small firestorm that became a tsunami after he posted a second, purely sarcastic comment that really tweaked the Left! As WND’s Chelsea Schilling reported on Tuesday evening: After the bombing Monday, Rush tweeted, “Everybody do the National Security Ankle Grabs! Let’s...

A federal law enforcement source tells Fox News on Wednesday that investigators are looking for two men that are persons of interest in Monday's Boston Marathon terror attack and have distributed photos for "law enforcement eyes only." The FBI is not sharing the photos with the public. A Fox News reporter has seen the photos and called them "clear." According to the reporter, one of the men has a backpack that appears to match the bag believed to have been used in the attack. The other man also appears to have a bag of some kind. The source asked that...

Sagging? “Sagging is a manner of wearing trousers (slacks, shorts, pants or jeans) below the waist, revealing much of the underwear. Sagging is predominantly a male fashion.” According to Greg Mathis; the retired Michigan 36th District Court Judge and syndicated Television show judge, sagging was adopted from the U.S. prison system where belts are prohibited. The style was later popularized by hip-hop artists in the 1990s. It has since become a symbol of freedom and cultural awareness among some youths or a symbol of their rejection of the values of mainstream society. Just prior to the 2008 Presidential Election, Barrack...

I was listening to the local FM talk radio station in Columbia, Missouri this morning. A lady called in to say that she had just renewed her driver's license. The license office she went to happens to be right next door to an office of the Department of Homeland Security. She asked the clerk specifically if her documents would be shared with DHS. The clerk said that they would be sent to DHS for review, after which DHS would "delete" them. Right. If this is happening in Missouri, it's happening in every state. It just hasn't been exposed yet.

6 arrested in alleged kickback scheme at Sacred Heart Hospital April 16, 2013|By Jason Meisner | Tribune reporter An elderly man was admitted to Sacred Heart Hospital on Chicago's West Side in late February, intubated and sedated for more than a week and scheduled for an emergency tracheotomy even though it was medically unnecessary, federal prosecutors allege. After a hospital administrator raised questions, the surgery was postponed. Later that day, the administrator asked the longtime owner of the hospital, Edward Novak, if he was upset about the cancellation. "Tell me about it! Tell me about it!" Novak allegedly replied. What...
