The 26-year-old woman was returning home from a shop in her village nearly 130km from the southwestern town of Najran, when she was bitten by the snake. She was rushed to hospital where she was treated with antibiotics and discharged a few days later after she fully recovered, Sabq newspaper said. “Three weeks later, the woman was bitten by a wasp and...

Changing the categories of family life and genealogy could send “a real earthquake” through the social structure....

Rep. Tom Graves (R-GA) made his bid to stop the ObamaCare train wreck by introducing the Stability, Security, and Fairness Resolution, which essentially funds every part of the government except ObamaCare for the coming year. The gigantic federal government is now funded by an endless string of emergency spending resolutions, a stack of fiscal Band-Aids high enough to reach the Moon. Rep. Graves is simply proposing to leave ObamaCare out of this year’s check-writing frenzy, which seems only fair, since President Obama already broke the law to delay the crucial employer mandate past the 2014 elections. Why not put the...

The Outer Limits debuted on Monday, September 16, 1963 on ABC. Although this imaginative science fiction anthology series was cancelled midway through its second season, it gained a good cult following and proved to be highly influential. The show had several truly fine episodes. The Wikipedia article is very informative. Many of the episodes are available online.
  • Morning Bell: Will Unions Want to Repeal Obamacare?

In a typical Friday afternoon “news dump,” the Treasury Department announced it could not grant unions’ request for another special Obamacare break. This time, unions had lobbied the Administration to let union-run, multi-employer plans receive taxpayer-funded insurance subsidies on the new exchanges. These subsidies would be in addition to the tax break that multi-employer plans, like health plans offered by all employers, already receive. Union leaders wrote to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) in July asking for the Obamacare “fix,” stating that their progressive “vision has come back to haunt us”:

The IRNA, Iran's official news agency, revealed today its plans to venture forth into space with perhaps the country's most iconic animal on board: the Persian cat. The flat-faced favorite of fanciers would be the first Iranian visitor to space after the possibly-fake space monkey that Iran insists returned safely from near space a few months back. Iran's efforts to become a power in space--and certainly Iran has made more strides in this area than any of its neighbors, besides Israel--are concerning to many in the western world, who see Iran's presence in space as potentially dangerous. For its part,...

Michelle Obama says the beats and melodies in Latin music are so irresistible that even President Barack Obama "will shake his groove thing" Monday night. Gloria Estefan, Romeo Santos, Lila Downs, Marco Antonio Solis and other top Latin musicians are joining the Obamas to tape the latest installment of the PBS series, "In Performance at the White House." It will celebrate the various styles of Latin music during Hispanic Heritage Month, which began Sunday.

Today, after careful consideration, I have reluctantly notified Pres. Obama that I am withdrawing my name from consideration as Fed Chairman. I have reluctantly concluded that any possible confirmation process for me would be acrimonious and would not serve the interest of the Federal Reserve, the Administration or, ultimately, the interests of the nation's ongoing economic recovery. I am familiar with Dr. Friedman's work regarding money supply and the Great Depression of the 1930's and 1940's. Further, I am familiar with Taylor Rule and a few other topics. Therefore, my knowledge is at least broad and relevant as past Fed...

Seventy-four percent of Americans think teachers make less than they really do, according to a new poll from Rasmussen. The average teacher salary in America is $55,000 (upward of $75,000 in Chicago), but three quarters of Americans think teachers earn less than that. Over half of Americans (52 percent) believe teachers are paid too little. Just 15 percent believe they are paid too much while 26 percent think teachers are paid the right amount. In a related poll, just 26 percent of Americans give public schools positive marks.

New York Times columnist David Brooks argued on PBS' "NewsHour" Friday night that "Sen. Ted Cruz and similar legislators" are obstructionists who care more about undermining the Republican establishment than advancing legislation. Note that I didn't use "conservative" to modify "columnist" or "David Brooks," though the Times and other mainstream media outlets routinely bill Brooks as conservative. Featuring a left-leaning moderate and depicting him as a conservative is a clever technique the liberal media employ to discredit conservative ideas. Not to mention any names, but we see this technique in practice daily on NBC's deranged stepchild, MSNBC, where a former...

They said if we voted Republican the government would be sticking their noses into our sex lives, and they were right! ‘Are you sexually active? If so, with one partner, multiple partners or same-sex partners?” Be ready to answer those questions and more the next time you go to the doctor, whether it’s the dermatologist or the cardiologist and no matter if the questions are unrelated to why you’re seeking medical help. And you can thank the Obama health law. “This is nasty business,” says New York cardiologist Dr. Adam Budzikowski. He called the sex questions “insensitive, stupid and very...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Drilling and fracking for natural gas don't seem to spew immense amounts of the greenhouse gas methane into the air, as has been feared, a new study says. The findings bolster a big selling point for natural gas, that it's not as bad for global warming as coal. And they undercut a major environmental argument against fracking, a process that breaks apart deep rock to recover more gas. The study, mostly funded by energy interests, doesn't address other fracking concerns about potential air and water pollution. The results, which generally agree with earlier Environmental Protection Agency estimates,...

Almost 1 in 10 U.S. high school seniors have engaged in recent extreme binge drinking—downing at least 10 drinks at a rate that barely budged over six years, according to a government-funded report. Less severe binge drinking, consuming five or more drinks in a row, has mostly declined in recent years among teens. But for high school seniors, the 2011 rate for 10 drinks in a row—9.6 percent—was down only slightly from 2005. The most extreme level—15 or more drinks in a row within the past two weeks—didn’t change from 2005 to 2011. Almost 6 percent of high school seniors...

Jonathan Spyer, is an academic with degrees in international relations, and who lives in Israel and also traveled with rebel fighters in Syria, claims that the so called moderates are MB types, who believe in Islamic law. Spyers says that when Obama speaks of the moderates leading the rebellion in Syria, these are the fighters he is talking about. “ “Undoubtedly outside of Syria, and in the Syrian opposition structures, there are civilian political activists and leaders who are opposed to al-Qaida and opposed to Islamism. There are also civilian activists and structures within the country which are opposed to...

President Barack Obama on Monday wearily lamented “yet another mass shooting,” this time in the nation’s capital where the debate that raged earlier this year over tightening firearms laws has stalled amid opposition from gun-rights advocates. The shooting at the Washington Navy Yard came a week after voters recalled two Colorado legislators who supported tougher gun measures, illustrating the strong political headwinds faced by lawmakers seeking to respond to the violence. …

FORMER defence force chief Peter Cosgrove remains a favourite to be the next Governor-General. The respected military leader is highly regarded by Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott. If he was asked to fill the Vice-Regal position he would play a high-profile role in commemorating the 100-year anniversary of Anzac Day. Governor-General Quentin Bryce's term was extended until March 2014 last year, giving the new government six months to choose a replacement.
  • What the New Obamacare Polls Reveal

Two new detailed polls out today, from The Wall Street Journal and the Pew Center, confirm and deepen the grim state of public opinion on Obamacare. The law remains as unpopular as ever. There is a massive intensity gap between opponents of the law and supporters (41 percent of Americans strongly disapprove, against just 26 percent who strongly approve). And the main characteristic of public opinion is that people have no idea how the law works. Lack of knowledge about the law has always been closely associated with opposition. Most of the provisions of the law, when described to people,...
