On top of boasting killer sandwiches and grouchy Jewish waiters, NYC landmark Katz's Delicatessen is really damn old. So old, in fact, that it hit the big 1-2-5 this year. CBS News commemorated the deli's delicious reign with this awesome vid, featuring the likes of Mario Batali and Jim Gaffigan. (The Hot Pocket connoisseur explains, "Some dads take their kids to museums. I take my kids to Katz's.") It's all pretty great -- and, for a stretch, pretty orgasmic -- plus it packs in more than enough food p*rn to justify second lunch. If you don't feel like congratulating Katz's...

December 11, 2013, 05:36 pm Veterans groups angry over budget deal By Jeremy Herb Veterans groups are lashing out at the congressional budget deal for targeting military retirement accounts to help pay for spending increases. The Military Coalition, a group of 33 uniformed services and veterans organizations, is sent a letter to House and Senate leaders, as well as President Obama and Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, expressing their anger with the deal. This radical proposal basically kills the grandfather-concern addressed by both Congress and the administration and actually eliminates the appropriate review process failing to consider long-term readiness and retention...

Revelation: Colin Powell, George W. Bush's secretary of state, has confirmed the suspicion that derailed his plan to run for president: He's not just a liberal, but a socialist. It's been a long time ago now, but Powell was once the dream Republican presidential candidate for a lot of pundits, campaign experts and ordinary Americans who appreciated his outstanding military service and pull-yourself-up-by-the-bootstraps success story. Now we find that Powell is with the extreme left of the Democratic Party on health care, supporting European-style single-payer socialized medicine. Taliban fighters set off a car bomb outside the main gate used by U.S. and allied forces, hitting a German convoy entering the installation, according to recent reports. The bombing comes as Washington and Kabul continue to wrangle over a postwar plan for the country after U.S. forces pull out in 2014. House Republican leaders defended a new bipartisan budget agreement Wednesday, as some conservatives and liberals voiced objections to an $85 billion compromise that would fund federal agencies through the fall of 2015. The deal, announced late Tuesday by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray (D-Wash.), immediately came under criticism from conservatives on and off Capitol Hill, with some outside groups such as the influential Heritage Action for America announcing their opposition a full day in advance. The White House clarified its stance just days before Iran is scheduled to launch another ballistic missile some 75 miles into the atmosphere. The statement contradicts recent remarks indicating that such a test would in fact violate and nullify the weeks-old agreement, which provides Iran with some $7 billion in relief from economic sanctions in exchange for a partial six-month freeze of its uranium enrichment program.

Individuality shoves others aside, separating and isolating people. We see it as the primary characteristic of a child, and rightly so. When we confuse individuality with the spiritual life, we remain isolated. This shell of individuality is God’s created natural covering designed to protect the spiritual life. The Supreme Court over the past four decades has issued some decisions that not only defied the Constitution, but imposed changes on our society that go so far as to challenge fundamental principles of our civilization. Paul Ryan (WI-VR) and Patty Murray (WA-D) have announced a bland bargain on the Federal budget. The proposal would restore $65 million in automatic spending cuts currently in law and increase federal spending from $967 billion next year to roughly $1 trillion. In other words former Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan was outfoxed by former pre-school teacher Patty Murray. This will add $70 billion to Federal spending both this year and next. The result? The Federal debt load will be $25 trillion by the end of the next Presidential cycle. What happened to the downsizing of the Federal government that...

OF ALL the institutions of modern China, the one that most famously reflects the Communist Partys determination to control its population is the one that literally does so: its one-child policy. The enforcers of family planning (the bureaucracy numbers about 500,000 now) have been a formidable presence in every town across China for more than 30 years. Now those enforcers will be processing a different kind of paperwork: couples where one parent is an only child (as opposed to both) will be allowed to have a second child. The change, decided by the Communist Party Central Committee at a plenum...

A book advising newly-wed women on how to be "submissive" has become a publishing phenomenon in Spain while outraging feminists who have called for it to be banned. The polemic book by married Italian author Costanza Miriano titled 'Csate y s sumisa Get Married and Be Submissive was published by the Catholic Arbishopric of the southern city of Granada in November and soared up the bestseller list. The book, which was a bestseller in Italy, preaches a message of "loyal obedience, generosity and submission" on the part of the new wife and offers nuggets of advice for the...

Full Title: "Newtown anniversary: US schools keep trying wrong fixes to deter school shootings, experts say." It happened after Columbine, after Virginia Tech, and after Newtown, too. After every massacre in a school, Americans grasp at quick cures. Let's install metal detectors and give guns to teachers. Let's crack down on troublemakers, weeding out kids who fit the profile of a gunman. Let's buy bulletproof whiteboards for the students to scurry behind, or train kids to throw erasers or cans of soup at an attacker.

Normally, one could get your local forecast by entering your city/state or zip code. This only works for some places such as "Lake Charles, LA" (which has a weather center with radar) but not for "Lafayette, LA". It is unclear if it a "database" issue or what the problem with this website. But if you go to the main site (, one will notice items missing that are normally there (Drought Monitor, December-January-February Forecast) as well as the local forecast webpage.

Paul Teller, the executive director of the conservative Republican Study Committee, has reportedly been fired, a senior GOP aide confirmed to TPM on Wednesday. Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA, pictured), the chairman of the RSC, asked for Teller's resignation, according to Politico on Wednesday. The RSC serves as the policy group for roughly 170 conservative members in the House. A senior GOP aide said that Teller had been "divulging private, member level conversations and actively working against strategies developed by the RSC members." Teller's firing is also notable given that when Scalise took the reigns of the RSC in 2012 he...

Another week, another media frenzy over our pope. This morning Time announced they have selected Pope Francis as Person of the Year. Good news? A non-story? What to make of this all? George Weigel has said that the late Blessed John Paul II regularly inquired of his visitors the details of what was happening in their corner of the world. According to Weigel, the pope wasnt as much interested in the political stories that dominated the headlines. He was more fascinated by what the Holy Spirit was doing through these events. Which brings us to the widespread popularity of...
