The legality of Vermont's all-payer claims database At issue in Gobeille v. Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is whether or not the federal Employee Retirement Income Security Act supersedes Vermont's law that requires insurers to report data to its all-payer claims database. Liberty Mutual argues that it does, and thus refused to provide that state with the information that its law required. The Supreme Court agreed June 29 to hear the case, according to the Court's list of cases set to be argued in the term starting in October. Oral arguments have not yet been scheduled for the case, but recently,...

To the best of my knowledge, I don't think Donald Trump has paid for a single ad on television. He has created a lot of ads, but he has just put them on the internet, and they've gone viral. Or he's simply tweeted comments, or done stunts like his latest effort, where he sent bottles of Trump-branded bottled water to Marco Rubio: Donald Trump is escalating his attacks on Sen. Marco Rubio with a special delivery for his rival: "Trump Ice Natural Spring Water." Trump has previously trained his fire on Rubio, claiming he has the worst voting attendance record...

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Two years ago, Augustus Sol Invictus walked from central Florida to the Mojave Desert and spent a week fasting and praying, at times thinking he wouldn't survive. In a pagan ritual to give thanks when he returned home, he killed a goat and drank its blood. Now that he's a candidate for U.S. Senate, the story is coming back to bite him. The chairman of the Libertarian Party of Florida has resigned to call attention to Invictus' candidacy in hopes that other party leaders will denounce him. Exposing the foibles of the Kennedy family has been a cottage industry since old Joe Kennedy made a bundle during Prohibition and caught a glimpse of Gloria Swanson. The Kennedy story, equal parts triumph and tragedy, has been hawked by serious historians and shameless hucksters alike, gobbled up by an insatiable public that never seems to tire of tales where wealth, power, and misfortune collide to produce a quintessentially American saga. It was amazing to me how much the Kennedys tried to control their narrative. They couldn’t do anything to stop the books, movies, and supermarket tabloids. They could, however,...

President Barack Obama’s recent trip to Alaska helped draw attention to global climate change — and to the national-security tensions that could result from a warming Arctic region. Surveyors believe that the seabed under Arctic waters could contain hundreds of billions of barrels of untapped oil. As the North Pole becomes more accessible, and so more valuable, Arctic countries — each with its own and in some cases overlapping territorial claims — are getting ready for some serious competition. The United States and Russia are geopolitical rivals and uneasy Arctic neighbors. More and more Russian and U.S. military forces are...

My name is Christine, and I get food stamps. I've had to apply off and on over the past 16 years in order to make sure my family was fed. I don't feel the least bit ashamed of myself for this, but apparently some people think I should. Some people think I, and people like me, am lazy. Those people seem to have an image in their heads of how someone who "deserves" assistance behaves, and a very narrow idea of how we should feel about it. Those people are...

Apple and Facebook are asserting themselves as gatekeepers of necessary information to the public. Can we trust them? We're trying to have a democracy here, and ideally an informed one. Nowadays, however, almost everyone is too distracted with their smartphones to muster the attention span to put up with reading a newspaper or news magazine delivered by a publisher, or even watching TV news. Instead, we get news through apps and on social networks. The biggest source of apps in the U.S. and the biggest social network are Apple's App Store and Facebook, respectively. Remember that Windows 10 launched on July 29th. With that in mind we can see that August saw plenty of growth, but things slowed rather markedly in September. Whether he wishes to sing God Save the Queen at public events seems a rather trivial matter. The remarkable thing about his brand of leftism is how reactionary it is. The theory that Nefertiti may be buried in Tutankhamun’s tomb was introduced by Egyptologist Nicholas Reeves. Ahram Online (AO): What is your opinion about Reeves' theory, and could it be true? Minister: It is a respectable scientific theory that could prove right or wrong, and when examining the west and north walls of Tutankhamun’s burial chamber, I realised that all the evidence that Reeves mentioned regarding the existence of hidden chambers is...

MOSCOW — Ratcheting up the confrontation over the Syria war, Russia said Monday that its “volunteer” ground forces would join the fight, and NATO warned the Kremlin after at least one Russian warplane trespassed into Turkey’s airspace. The saber-rattling on both sides reflected a dangerous new big-power entanglement in the war, as longstanding differences between Russia and the United States over President Bashar al-Assad of Syria and his opponents increasingly play out not only in the halls of the United Nations but on the battlefield in Syria.

Nevada Assembly Majority Whip Jim Wheeler announced today that he is backing Ted Cruz for president after the candidate he previously supported dropped out of the race. Wheeler is the second prominent Nevada leader to endorse a presidential candidate in two days after Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker backed out of the race two weeks ago. Former Nevada Gov. Bob List pledged his support to Marco Rubio on Sunday. Wheeler and List both previously served on Walker’s campaign in Nevada. Wheeler said that Cruz is “willing to take on the tough fights for what is right” and defend the U.S. Constitution....

In an interview with Fox News Latino, Rubio, a Florida Republican, said that he didn’t think Trump’s offensive remarks about Latinos would alienate the electorate from the GOP. At the same time, he said, Trump has to be held accountable for his controversial comments and positions. Rubio expressed exasperation over the billionaire’s antics, and said the election needed to be focused on substance and details about what policies a candidate would push and try to implement if elected president. “He’s going to do what he’s going to do,” Rubio said. “This campaign is about serious things.”

Team Bush argues they're built to go the distance in the primary, but that won't matter if Jeb has nothing to offer. The Jeb Bush “Don’t Panic, Everything Is Fine” campaign is up and running. With his poll numbers in decline, Jeb is rolling out endorsements and assuring reporters that he’s meeting fundraising targets and will have plenty of money to take the Jeb 2016 machine all the way through the primary season. The arc of Jeb’s campaign is following a very Bush-like trajectory – he started the nominating contest with a “shock and awe” strategy of winning the primary early...

Dozens of Islamist Saudi Arabian clerics have called on Arab and Muslim countries to "give all moral, material, political and military" support to what they term a jihad, or holy war, against Syria's government and its Iranian and Russian backers. Although the clerics who signed the online statement are not affiliated with the government, their strong sectarian and anti-Christian language reflects mounting anger among many Saudis over Russian and Iranian involvement in Syria's civil war. Russia last week started air strikes against Syrian opposition targets that it describes as aimed at weakening the jihadist Islamic State group, a move Riyadh...

A serendipitous deal between a history museum and a smuggler has provided new insight into one of the most famous stories ever told: "The Epic of Gilgamesh." The new finding, a clay tablet, reveals a previously unknown "chapter" of the epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia. This new section brings both noise and color to a forest for the gods that was thought to be a quiet place in the work of literature. The newfound verse also reveals details about the inner conflict the poem's heroes endured. In 2011, the Sulaymaniyah Museum in Slemani, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, purchased...

Last year, the budget writers in Gov. Jerry Brown's administration held their noses when Democrats pushed through the Legislature a $3.2-million subsidy for a union healthcare plan. It was something the state would "hopefully get out of the business of doing next year," Keely Bosler, the chief finance deputy, said at the time. But the governor approved an additional $2.5-million subsidy in June, and now Democratic lawmakers want a longer financial commitment. They passed legislation last month that would provide similar funding for the union — the storied United Farm Workers once led by Cesar Chavez — for five more...
