...We should not be tempted to politicize our courts. Of course, there is nothing wrong about debating the pros and cons of court rulings, but our judges should not be tempted to decide cases based on politics rather than merits. Decisions must be based on honest interpretation of the law. We should demand impartial judges. We do not want them out raising money for campaigns.

On the heels of a positive September jobs report, which showed a 0.3 percentage point drop in the national unemployment rate, prominent conservative Jack Welch and some others on the right are questioning the source of the numbers, suggesting on Twitter that the Obama team had in some way manipulated the data to their advantage. "Unbelievable jobs numbers..these Chicago guys will do anything..can't debate so change numbers," wrote Welch, the former chairman and CEO of General Electric, shortly after the September jobs report was released. Conservative radio host Laura Ingraham piled on in a Twitter message of her own: "Jobs...

CBO reports deficit was $1.1 trillion in 2012By Erik Wasson - 10/05/12 01:07 PM ET The government's fiscal 2012 has now come to a close and the score is in. The budget deficit for 2012 was $1.1 trillion, the fourth year of trillion-dollar deficits under President Obama. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said Friday that the $1.1 trillion shortfall, based on Treasury statements, was about $200 billion less than in fiscal 2011. But part of this difference is due to a timing shift that put some final payments in 2011 because Oct. 1, 2011 fell on a weekend. Without the...

As John noted earlier today, Mitt Romney is ahead of President Obama by two points in the latest Rasmussen survey, not all of which was conducted after the debate. The reason for Romney’s surge is straightforward, but a memo by highly-respected Republican pollster David Winston helps us appreciate the impact of the debate. Winston notes: The opening 2012 Presidential debate was watched by a remarkable 67.2 million viewers according to Nielsen, and some have estimated that with computers, tablets, and phones that number may well be over 70 million. This was a 28% increase from the first 2008 Presidential debate...

Contrary to conventional wisdom that debates are rarely, if ever, game-changers, the first presidential debate was a demolition derby. And no amount of post-debate fact-checking, spinning or dances of one’s choice (Barack Obama has cited Mitt Romney’s tap-dancing and soft-shoe) is going to alter the impression of Romney’s winning-ness. It was quite simply a knockout performance by the Republican challenger. Or, as Notre Dame professor and political observer Robert Schmuhl put it, “Romney gets a gold medal, and Obama wasn’t even in the same competition.” Schmuhl, a professor of American studies and the author of “Statecraft and Stagecraft: American Political...

First, there was the CBS instant poll taken immediately following Wednesday night’s Presidential debate. The poll was a “scientifically representative” sample of uncommitted voters that showed Romney cruising to an overwhelming victory by a margin of 2-1 over President Obama. Then, there was the collective meltdown of the MSNBC cable news network and other left-wing media outlets, which served only to confirm what many who watched the debate already knew: Romney absolutely clobbered President Obama. Now, Legal Insurrection has obtained an infographic from TargetPoint Consulting, courtesy of Matthew Knee, which illustrates just how beneficial Wednesday night was for Mitt Romney....

Thousands of President Obama supporters turned out in in Madison, Wisc., for a rally following Wednesday night’s debate in Denver. The mood was somber, to say the least, as they waited to enter Bascom Mall at the University of Wisconsin Thursday afternoon. University of Wisconsin students and fellow Wisconsinites had mixed reviews on the president's performance. I talked to supporters of the president who had watched the debate, asking how they thought the president did. One after the other said they were left unimpressed and “not inspired,” seemingly depressed and lethargic in their continuing support of the president. More than...

That is today’s story. But will it be the way we tell it after November 7? On the surface it seems set in stone: Romney was crisp, Obama slow on the uptake. Romney made jokes, Obama swallowed them. Every clip is notable in its own way, but this wins the award for most candid. The president — who has alternately inspired, disappointed, reignited and flamed out — admits that, deep down, he’s a little bit lazy. Pretty soon we will have only a few million people employed and “full employment” in this country. Well, not quite. But you get the point. The economy is creating so few jobs that millions are staying out of the labor market, thereby prevent the unemployment rate from soaring. In September we created a measly 114,000 jobs, but the rate declined to 7.8 percent. Consider that if labor force participation had held even since January (when it was 8.3 percent), the jobless rate would be 8.4 percent. If the job participation rate were the same as when Barack Obama took office,...

Fears rise as service men and women abroad face difficulties registering to vote and acquiring absentee ballots for November's elections. The number of military voters from Virginia who have requested absentee ballots is down 75% from what it was four years ago. In 2008, over 20,000 absentee ballots had been requested at this point in time, but in 2012 that figure has dropped to just over 5,000. The Military Voter Protection Project blames the Pentagon for this drop, saying "bureaucratic inertia" has bogged down the process and left military members without any real mechanism to encourage or facilitate voting. Big Bird may seem as apolitical as he is unable to fly, but the eight-foot-tall primrose condor (or canary, depending on who you ask) is no stranger to presidential politics. In fact, as the veteran of even more administrations than Dick Cheney, the jibe from Mitt Romney at Wednesday’s debate wasn’t even the first time the oversize muppet ruffled Republican feathers. Back in 1970, the first time Big Bird visited the White House, he got a little too touchy feely for First Lady Pat Nixon’s tastes, longtime puppeteer Carol Spinney wrote in his 2003 memoir The Wisdom of Big Bird.

Section 6001 of the health care law effectively bans new physician-owned hospitals (POHs) from starting up, and it keeps existing ones from expanding. Problems at California refineries have slashed supplies across the state, cutting fuel production and raising wholesale prices -- the price stations pay for their gasoline -- by as much as 73 cents, to levels not seen since 2007. With the presidential election a little more than a month away, political science professors from the University of Colorado have updated their election forecast with more current economic conditions and are standing by their prediction that Mitt Romney will win. The professors -- Kenneth Bickers of CU's Boulder campus and Michael Berry of CU's Denver campus -- project that Romney will earn 330 of the total 538 Electoral College votes. President Barack Obama is expected to receive 208 votes, which is down five from the initial prediction that the professors announced on Aug. 22. “We continue to show that the...

Debate loss shatters the president’s carefully crafted image The poet Robert Graves wrote, “One hard look can close the book that lovers love to see.” On Wednesday night, Americans saw Barack Obama in a new, hard light. He was not the smooth, confident leader they imagined him to be. He was rambling, unfocused and ultimately bested by another, more able man. His defeat defied what was expected, or what many believed was even possible. The scene was reminiscent of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Man Who Would Be King” where Danny Dravot, a British soldier with delusions of godhood, is bitten by...

THE TAKEAWAY: U.S. factory orders plummets in August by most since January 2009 > Demand likely to remain weak amid global slowdown and weak business spending > USDJPY bearish New orders to U.S. factories plunged in August by the most since January 2009, as a sharp slump in transportation weighed on manufacturing activity. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, orders for factory goods declined 5.2 percent in August, following a revised gain of 2.6 percent the previous month that was lower than the 2.8 percent growth initially reported. The consensus forecast of 66 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News had...

Under the Obama Administration, Big Labor has seized control of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB or Board) to drive its self-interested agenda – a truly unprecedented development in the history of the NLRB. In the past, Board law has changed when control moved from one political party to another. But never before has a Board majority conducted itself in such unprincipled partisan manner, ramming through an extremist agenda and dissembling about it. Three examples demonstrate the point: The NLRB stripped workers of their right to a secret ballot election to challenge their employer’s recognition of a union by card...

A Philadelphia high schooler says she was humiliated after her teacher told her to remove a Mitt Romney T-shirt she was wearing, comparing it to “wearing a KKK shirt.” Samantha Pawlucy, a 16-year-old sophomore at Charles Carroll High School in the Port Richmond section of the city, says she wore a pink Mitt Romney/Paul Ryan T-shirt last Friday during the school's dress-down day.

The outrage and the violent protests organised by Islamists across the world have nothing to do with the supposed desecration of religion. Instead, these incidents are calibrated attempts by so-called religious leaders to firm up their politics, even at the cost of people’s lives Even before the crowd from the previous protest had returned home, a new mob had gathered on the streets. It had been gaining strength throughout the day as hundreds arrived loaded in trucks and buses, and more people from the outside kept pouring in. Over the next couple of hours, the crowd swelled in numbers and...

"The squeeze is on, and people are doing desperate things," is how one independent described the situation in California. As Bloomberg reports, a shortage of supply along with drastically higher wholesale prices of gasoline has caused 'mom-and-pop' gas stations to close down as their margins are destroyed. Even larger firms, such as CostCo, are closing sites due to the shortages as Los Angeles and San Francisco gas prices jump 30-45c in a few days. As one owner noted: "I can get gas, but it’s going to cost me $4.90 a gallon, and I can’t sell it here for $5," and...
