The coronavirus story continues the Dictatorship of COVID-19 worldwide the Faucian version of how humanity is supposed to live with the backdrop of President Trump's diagnosis and treatment now underway. "If we had an honest media" starts this Twitter post..... We'll move forward and consider those from the world of music who have moved on this week. He was one of my friend's favorite singers back in the 1970's and songs like this remind me why my friend loved the music of Mac Davis who passed away this week at the age of 78..... Before we remember the music of...

Starting off the music some women I was infatuated with in my fantasy world back in my youth and the reality slap to the face of my vanity and ego from the late great Jim Croce a short life with some great music left behind.... I fantasized that I was someone much greater than myself to deal with reality through decades of my life and wanting to be someone big can lead to something awful. A convicted killed said this when he appeared before a parole board last month.... "I assassinated him....because he was very, very, very famous and that's...

When youve sold as many records as Abba have and only The Beatles have sold more specific figures become hazy. They disappear into a statistical stratosphere occupied by a tiny elite of global megastars. There are simply too many territories to report on, too many releases to keep track of, too many vast numbers to juggle. All one can say with any certainty is that the Swedish quartet have sold in excess of 380m albums and singles since they first came to prominence 40 years ago this month, winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with a performance of...

Among the many victims of Covid-19 is this year's Eurovision Song Contest. When its cancelation was first announced, Mark harked back to its Boom-Bang-a-Bang Ding-Ding-a-Dong heyday and talked to Dana about a lovely exception to that rule. Last night, the BBC, in lieu of the actual competition, invited viewers to vote for the all-time greatest Euro-blockbuster. The winners, not surprisingly, were the most successful act ever to come out of Eurovision. It was all more harmonious in the old days. One recalls the 1990 Eurovision finals in Zagreb, when the charming hostess, Helga Vlahović, presented her own fair country as...

I guess I'll start by noting that in China dealing with Covid-19 has meant things like health screenings where people are asked questions and their temperature is taken. Going to work in the "front lines" for me means going through such a screening. So life in the USA for many of us resembles going to work in Communist China. The media including the "conservative talk show hosts" like to talk a lot about Communist China or even Russia but I feel like they do that really to distract from how much like Russia and China like things are right here...

ONE OF A KIND - FIRST GENERATION AUDIO. This is the concert segment IN TRUE STEREO from the 1978 special "Olivia!" Just prior to shooting this segment with a live orchestra, the audio guy asked if I would like a stereo feed of the sound. Of course I said yes and fed two three-quarter inch VCRs with the special feed. Stereo TV was not available widely until the mid-1980s. After completion of the special, I manually synced the 2" master of the show to my 3/4" master and, viola, a stereo version of the concert with Andy Gibb, ABBA, and...

Swedish pop group ABBA is responsible for hit songs like "Dancing Queen," "Mamma Mia," and "Money, Money, Money." Made up of two sets of then couples Agnetha Fltskog and Bjrn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad ABBA has sold over 380 million albums and singles worldwide and is the third-best-selling group of all time, behind the Beatles and Queen and ahead of the Rolling Stones. But in 1979, at the height of their success, Fltskog and Ulvaeus divorced while Lyngstad and Andersson called it quits soon after in 1981. By 1982, the group was broken up. In...

In 1970, a rock-cut tomb was discovered by workers building a private house in Jerusalem's Givat Hamivtar neighborhood. Inside the two-chambered burial, dating back to the first century BCE, archeologists found a decorated ossuary a limestone box containing the bones of the deceased and an enigmatic Aramaic inscription affixed to the wall. "I am Abba, son of Eleazar the priest," proclaimed the 2,000-year-old text. "I am Abba, the oppressed, the persecuted, born in Jerusalem and exiled to Babylon, who brought back Mattathiah son of Judah and buried him in the cave that I purchased." Who was Abba, this...

It is 40 years since Abba won the Eurovision Song Contest in Brighton - a victory that started their meteoric rise to super group status with millions of fans around the globe. When the four-piece stepped on to the stage accompanied by a man dressed as Napoleon to deliver their country's entry for the competition, they were virtually unknown. The audience at the 1,700-seat Brighton Dome on 6 April, 1974, had no idea how huge the Swedish group, which performed Waterloo, would become. Most of them were concentrating on the UK entry - Olivia Newton John with her song Long...

Swedish disco titans ABBA werent as fond of sequins as it may have appeared. According to ABBA: The Official Photo Book, released to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the group career-making Eurovision victory for Waterloo, the Swedish foursome adopted their outlandish dressing style in order to ensure they could deduct the cost of their costumes under Swedish tax code. According to the book, Swedish laws allowed work wear to be tax deductible so long as it was demonstrably apparel that couldnt be worn on the street which, with its garish coloring and liberal use of sparkle, ABBAs certainly was....
