A 16-year-old in South Carolina is suing the state's Department of Motor Vehicles because the agency won't allow the teen to take a driver's license photo wearing makeup. Chase Culpepper, who was born male, regularly wears makeup and either androgynous or women's clothing. The teen does not identify with gender-specific pronouns. Culpepper told reporters Tuesday that being ordered by officials to remove what they called a disguise was humiliating. The lawsuit filed in federal court Tuesday says the DMV violated the teen's rights.

Joe Paterno had to be prodded by his family to read the grand jury report regarding Jerry Sandusky and did not understand some of its graphic terminology, according to a new book. The book, Paterno by Joe Posnanski, was purchased Friday by the Associated Press in advance of its release next week. In the book, Posnanski describes a scene at Paterno's home, two days after Sandusky had been charged with child sex abuse last November. Paterno's family and a close adviser were trying to explain to the Penn State coach that there was a growing sentiment Paterno must have known...

An accrediting organization has told Penn State that its status is "in jeopardy" based on recent developments in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. [Snip] The commission said in an Aug. 8 notice that Penn State remains accredited while "on warning" but it wants a monitoring report submitted by the end of next month detailing steps taken to ensure full compliance with governmental requirements, that the university's mission is being carried out, that the commission will be fully informed and that Penn State is complying with standards on leadership and governance as well as integrity. The commission also wants...

Midlanders who didn’t think Chick-fil-A could become anymore crowded than it already is were proved wrong today. Supporters from around the Permian Basin showed up in droves at both the Chick-fil-A on Loop 250 and the restaurant in Midland Park Mall. Some waited in the drive-thru line for more than an hour, while others stood in a line* that stretched outside and around a portion of the building so they could place an order. “I’d stay here for four hours if I had to,” said Maryann Harless, who had been sitting in the drive-thru for about an hour. “I...

College sports' governing body today suspended Penn State's football team from postseason bowl play for four years and fined the university $60 million for its handling of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. The team also must vacate all wins from 1998 through 2011. "The career record of former head football coach Joe Paterno will reflect these vacated records," the NCAA said in a statement. "Penn State must also reduce 10 initial and 20 total scholarships each year for a four-year period. In addition, the NCAA reserves the right to impose additional sanctions on involved individuals at the conclusion...

The NCAA will fine Penn State at least $30 million and perhaps as much as $60 million for its involvement in the Jerry Sandusky scandal, industry sources told CBSSports.com's Brett McMurphy. The record fine will go toward an endowment for children's causes, sources said. "This is a fine like no fine before," an industry source told CBSSports.com. CBSSports.com's Dennis Dodd has reported Penn State will face "significant penalties that could severely damage the football program's ability to compete" when the NCAA announces sanctions against the football program at a 9 a.m. news conference Monday. To put the fine in perspective,...

NCAA president Mark Emmert has decided to punish Penn State with severe penalties likely to include a significant loss of scholarships and loss of multiple bowls, a source close to the decision told ESPN's Joe Schad on Sunday morning. But Penn State will not receive the so-called "death penalty" that would have suspended the program for at least one year, the source said. The penalties, however, are considered to be so harsh that the death penalty may have been preferable, the source said. The NCAA will announce "corrective and punitive measures" for Penn State on Monday morning, it said in...

While the...
