Once upon a time, American schools were something to be proud of, with high expectations and students who – by some accounts – graduated high school with what is now the equivalent of two years of college under their belts. Most schools were under local control and were highly responsive to parents. Today all that has changed. We rank 36th on the world stage. Despite spending on average $12,000 per student per year, public education has become a joke. Why? There are endless reasons, but I’ll give two. One, public education does not permit competition among schools. Journalist and columnist...

Trump supporters share more fake news on social media than any other political group, according to a new study from Oxford University. Researchers studied more than 13,000 Twitter users and 47,000 Facebook pages in the days leading up to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address to determine which social media users spread the most “junk” news. They discovered that Trump supporters on Twitter shared more unreliable news than all other groups combined. On Facebook, extreme conservatives share more junk news than all other audiences put together. The researchers defined “junk news” as “misleading, deceptive or incorrect information purporting...

Does social science research and understanding suffer because most of the individuals working in the field are on the left side of the political spectrum? A new book gives us strong reasons to think so. The book is entitled The Politics of Social Psychology and was edited by professors Jarret Crawford and Lee Jussim. Its 15 chapters were written by academics, nearly all of them in university psychology departments. The common thread is the malign consequences of the ideological conformity that exists in their field. In their introduction, Crawford and Jussim ask, What happens when the tools of the scientific...

The defense of free speech has always been a bedrock bipartisan principle. So it’s unusual to hear a veteran liberal politician excuse campus outrage squads that shout down dissent. But that’s exactly what former Vermont governor and Democratic National Committee head Howard Dean did in a recent appearance.. Dean’s take on this was that there are “consequences to free speech.” He caricatured Erika Christakis’s thoughtful, sensitive letter as an ugly screed mocking “snowflake” students and defending racist costumes. He also described the protesters as well-behaved, despite their screaming and bullying. ... Dean is hardly alone...progressives on and off campus are...

A California political science professor reportedly called President Trump a “white supremacist” and an “orange reality star” in a syllabus for her class, and at one point asked how students "will explain" the current political era. Dr. Brooke Mascagni, who teaches “American Political Institutions” at California State University-Dominguez Hills, rails against Trump in the “shortened version” syllabus, according to Campus Reform.
  • Inside a Public School Social Justice Factory

The city of Edina has changed the way it approaches public education, putting social justice above learning. The results will shock you. For decades, the public schools of Edina, Minnesota, were the gold standard among the state’s school districts. Edina is an upscale suburb of Minneapolis, but virtually overnight, its reputation has changed. Academic rigor is unraveling, high school reading and math test scores are sliding, and students increasingly fear bullying and persecution. The shift began in 2013, when Edina school leaders adopted the “All for All” strategic plan—a sweeping initiative that reordered the district’s mission from academic excellence for...

Mary McCarthy and Lillian Hellman, both famous literary left-wingers, had a famous feud. McCarthy dared to proclaim that Hellman was a Truly Big Liar. When Dick Cavett asked (in 1979) what was so "dishonest" about Hellman, McCarthy snapped, "Everything. I once said in an interview that every word she writes is a lie, including 'and' and 'the.'" These entertaining charges make more sense when we consider that Lillian Hellman was "an ardent leftist," according to leftist PBS. Hellman was a pure expression of the agitprop personality. She instinctively engaged in meddling and propaganda. It was almost official doctrine that communists...

For youngest readers, a teddy bear named Thomas would rather be called Tilly — it's 'child abuse,' says one doctor of this overreach. The Wall Street Journal editorial board recently called out Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee for overstepping his executive authority on climate change. But it turns out he’s not the only one in the Evergreen State guilty of overrreach. Teachers in a dozen elementary schools across Seattle have been testing a new set of books and lessons on gender diversity, expression and identity — topics many would agree are outrageously inappropriate for the classroom, especially for young children,...
  • Marianne Williamson asked white people to apologize. She got it right. (Oh no she didn't)

Marianne Williamson walked to the middle of the stage, paused for a second, then she asked all the black people to stand. The New York Times best-selling author, internationally known spiritual teacher and native Houstonian was in town recently for her "Love America Tour" at Unity of Houston. She urged the 200 of us from our seats. She then instructed a white person to hold the hand of a black person standing. A white woman and a teenage girl who looked to be mother and daughter in the row behind me took my hand and arm. Williamson then told the...

Since my last column on academic hypocrisy several readers have written to express the view that intolerance toward conservative Christians is the only form of intolerance that academics are willing to tolerate. Such a view seems reasonable at first glance. Upon further reflection it misses the mark. Tolerance presupposes a) a moral judgment against something and b) the choice to permit it. Hence, my readers’ views are overly charitable. In order to elaborate, I ask my readers to imagine the following thought experiment:The Dean of Journalism at a large public university refuses to sponsor a speaker as a part of...

It's time American parents wake up to the reality of what many of our children are being 'instructed' in classrooms from coast to coast The American Left has morphed into our newest religion. With frightening similarities to Islam, the religion of the Left “is an authoritarian movement that wants total compliance with its dictates,” says Daniel Greenfield, journalism fellow at the Freedom Center, “with severe punishments for those who disobey.” In my new book, “Tyranny of the Minority,” I warn that “a Hillary Clinton victory might have placed us closer to a political inquisition in which conservatives would be given...

A former Union High School teacher who in 2011 called homosexuality a "perverted spirit" that "breeds like cancer" has agreed to a three-year suspension of her teaching certificates. The posts on Jenye "Viki" Knox's personal Facebook page eventually caused the special education teacher and faculty adviser to the school's Bible study group to resign. She later filed a federal lawsuit claiming school officials had violated her free speech and religious rights.

A professor, students and videotape. What I have frequently referred to as the Academic-Industrial-Complex (AIC) really is an organ of sorts of what I call the Racism-Industrial-Complex (RIC). One of the more recent illustrations of this point is Albert Ponce, a professor of political science at Diablo Valley College. One of Ponce’s lectures was recently video recorded by one of his students. The student released it to The Red Elephants—an on-line organization that has launched a campaign encouraging students to record their “Marxist professors—who in turn shared it with the campus watchdog publication, Campus Reform. Ponce is captured on video...
  • The 'Right' To Disrupt Free Speech On Campus -- It Doesn't Exist

When students (and others) disrupt events where speakers are trying to make arguments they dislike, they always say that their conduct is justified. Most commonly, the disrupters maintain that they are merely preventing “hate speech,” which allegedly doesn’t enjoy the protection of the First Amendment. Therefore, they are perfectly free to keep speakers they oppose from being heard. In fact, they say they’re acting righteously, by protecting against speech that supposedly leads to violence or oppression. Student zealots, such as those who prevented University of Oregon president Michael Schill from giving a speech, believe that. So, evidently, do some college...

Wisconsin’s supreme court can soon right a flagrant wrong stemming from events set in motion in 2014 at Milwaukee’s Marquette University by Cheryl Abbate. Although just a graduate student, she already had a precocious aptitude for academic nastiness.

On October 8, in an undergraduate course she was teaching on ethics, when the subject of same-sex marriage arose there was no debate because, a student said, Abbate insisted that there could be no defensible opposition to this. (Marquette is a Jesuit school.) After class, the student told her that he opposed same-sex marriage and her discouraging of debate about it. She replied (he recorded their interaction) that “there are some opinions that are not appropriate that are harmful . . . do you know whether anyone in the class is homosexual? . . . In this class homophobic comments . . . will not be tolerated.” The student’s appeals to Abbate’s superiors were unavailing (the chairman of her philosophy department referred to the student as an “insulin [sic] little twerp”), so he gave John C. McAdams his recording of Abbate rebuffing him.

  • FIVE THINGS PROFESSORS ACTUALLY SAID IN 2017

In 2017, President Trump’s first year in the Oval Office brought academic rage to new heights as professors frequently blasted the Commander-in-Chief and berated his voters and anyone who does not embrace progressivism. Here are five things that professors actually said in 2017: 1) Prof suggests Texans deserve hurricane for supporting Trump A University of Tampa professor publicly suggested that Texans deserved Hurricane Harvey because the state voted Republican last year. “I don’t believe in instant Karma but this kinda feels like it for Texas,” Professor Ken Storey tweeted in August. “Hopefully this will help them realize the GOP doesn’t...
