WASHINGTON — The White House is refusing to release the controversial photos of Air Force One flying over the Manhattan skyline last week that triggered panic among New Yorkers and an internal review in the Obama administration. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Tuesday that there was no need to release them. "I've watched CNN," he said, noting the considerable coverage from amateur footage. "I didn't notice a lack of archival material from that flight." He added that he didn't know where to locate the photos taken from inside the plane.

May 15, 2003- A jumbo jet - larger than either of the planes that exploded into the twin towers - flew low along the Hudson River and buzzed the Statue of Liberty yesterday before veering toward the heart of midtown. ...The plane was carrying U.S. troops on their way home from Iraq. But almost no one watching from below knew that - and the jittery city braced for the worst. We asked readers to dream up doctored landscapes for the President's Air Force One – and wow, did they ever deliver! On Monday, the Presidential jet and an F-16 fighter plane buzzed over lower Manhattan for a photo-op of the First Plane with New York City landmarks. The stunt sparked fears of terror attacks and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. We suggested the White House staffers could've gotten better results – for a lot less money – from the comforts of their own D.C. offices using a program like Photoshop. And YOU proved us right. An Air Force officer who served in the Clinton White House and for two years carried the "nuclear football" briefcase of codes says it's almost certain that the "highest levels" of the Obama administration knew about and approved this week's stunt in which Air Force One buzzed New York City. Retired Lt. Col. Buzz Patterson served in Clinton's White House from 1996 to 1998 and was responsible for the president's "emergency satchel," the black bag of nuclear codes that accompanies the president at all times. And in today’s political climate, “taking the fall” means being the one who says he’s sorry. The days of falling on one’s sword, even metaphorically, are long gone for Democrats. According to a CBS News article on April 22, President Obama’s flights on Earth Day — two on Air Force One and four on Marine One — consumed about 9,000 gallons of fuel. My first reaction to this news was that it was much ado about nothing, a scoop about as significant as the price tag on Sarah Palin’s campaign attire. But upon reflection, I realized these 9,000 gallons reflect a hypocrisy, endemic to globetrotting politicians and celebrities fighting climate change, more serious than what we generally expect from our public figures. The U.S. Air Force is looking for contractors interested in competing to design and build the next Air Force One, the fixed-wing aircraft that transports the president worldwide. This could set the stage for a new transatlantic battle between global widebody rivals Boeing and Airbus. Design options could include the Boeing 787, 747-8 and Airbus A380. A similar high-profile battle brewed a few years ago to provide the new Marine One, the iconic helicopter that shuttles the President to and from the White House lawn. That deal was won by an international consortium of Lockheed Martin and AgustaWestland.

The U.S. Air Force is looking to replace the president's air force fleet -- possibly with an Airbus, reports. The USAF has reportedly posted a request for information seeking market sources who can provide three "widebody" aircraft to replace the Boeing VC-25 Air Force One. The USAF posted a request for information for market sources that can provide three widebody aircraft to replace two, 19-year-old VC-25s, which are converted Boeing 747-200s. An analysis of alternatives performed in 2007, which identified the Airbus A380 as a candidate, found that it would be more cost-effective to buy new aircraft rather than modernize the VC-25s, the acquisition document says. Mildenhall is a major base for the US air force Confidential US Air Force (USAF) e-mails, some including flight plans for a presidential visit, have been mistakenly sent to a tourism website. The e-mails were meant to go to the US airbase at RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, via its website. But instead they went to a town tourism website which had a similar address. The USAF said there had been no "verified security breach" and it had advised airmen and other staff to use the correct e-mail address. Gary Sinnott, of Mildenhall, set up the website "" in the late...

"The POTUS is on board!" yelled a man of nearly 60 wearing a Navy baseball cap, dark pants and no tie, who had just climbed the drop-down backstairs of Air Force One in the dark and slipped into the rearmost cabin, crammed full with reporters and photographers. It was, in fact, not just the customary announcement made when the president of the United States (POTUS) boards his plane. This was, in fact, the POTUS himself, minutes before Monday night's secret trip to Baghdad, one so elaborately planned that it included the president lying to his closest aides and the White...
