Elizabeth H. Hyde, 25, of Belfast, reportedly was picked up by her boyfriend for an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting Tuesday morning. When the boyfriend realized that she was intoxicated, according to Belfast Police Chief Jeff Trafton, he decided to drive her to the hospital to...

I know Charlie Sheen. I've never met him, and I don't wish to. But I know who he is and how he feels. He is no super-star and he is not unique. He is merely a typical addict/alcoholic.

A senior administration official who read the book says "the President comes across in the review and throughout the decision-making process as a Commander in Chief who is analytical, strategic, and decisive, with a broad view of history, national security, and his role." The official says of the descriptions of the infighting in the book that "the debates in the book are well known because the policy review process was covered so exhaustively." White House officials are still matching New York Times excerpts with anecdotes in the book but one says not all the quoting is fair, especially Vice President...

"Al Gore has finally been interviewed face to face by detectives in the Molly Hagerty case," a close source told The ENQUIRER. "Details of what was disclosed in the police interview by Gore --and exactly how long...

Just heard this on Fox News from Chris Wallace What sublime arrogance. He will only sit in for 15 minutes. He is so stupid he doesn't want to demonstrate this during any conversation? Does Obama want to be out of the room when the threats are made about contributing billions into the escrow fund

In a call between the two leaders on Saturday morning, Obama wagered "the best beer in America" against the best lager on an American win.

On Wednesday's Rick's List, CNN's Rick Sanchez twice highlighted how "several Republicans want to keep the cap on what oil companies pay for spills at $75 million" and how apparently that's about "how much they [oil companies] spend on campaign contributions to politicians each year," but omitted that President Obama was the top recipient of money from BP during the 2008 election cycle.

Barack Obama is still struggling to kick smoking, according to his first medical examination since becoming president. Obama is sensitive about his cigarette habit and tetchy with reporters who raise it. But after his 90-minute medical at the Navy hospital outside Washington yesterday morning, his doctors confirmed he had not yet managed to conquer the habit and suggested he "continue smoking cessation efforts". The doctors also recommended "moderation of alcohol intake".

Montana Senator Max Baucus, who led the Democrats' health care reform legislation through the Senate last week, is responding to accusations that he was intoxicated while delivering a speech on the Senate floor. Video of the speech posted to YouTube over the weekend shows Baucus appearing to slur some of his words and repeating himself at times. Baucus' spokesman Tyler Matsdorf released a statement on Monday refuting claims that the Senator was drunk, calling it an 'untrue personal smear Internet rumor.' Matsdorf said, "This is beyond the pale and this type of gutter politics has no place in the public...

Sen. Max Baucus' office Monday denounced a widely viewed Internet video that suggested Baucus was drunk on the Senate floor last week, calling it an "untrue, personal smear" designed to attack Democrats' health-care reform legislation. "This is beyond the pale, and this type of gutter politics has no place in the public sphere," said Baucus spokesman Ty Matsdorf.

When one first looks at this article in The New Republic speculating about if Ted Kennedy's son, Patrick Kennedy, could grow into a great political leader, you wouldn't be blamed for thinking it was a satirical story written by either Scott Ott or some other humor columnist. However the name of the author is Jason Zengerle and he is being dead serious which actually makes it funnier than any intentionally satirical story could be. What makes Zengerle's article especially funny is that he provides absolutely no proof that Patrick Kennedy displays the slightest bit of political leadership. In fact, Zengerle...

Kudzu—an invasive vine infamous for choking much of the southern U.S.—may end up being a lifeline for alcoholics, a new rat study shows. Native to Asia, kudzu has long been used as a treatment for addiction by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine. Accidentally introduced to the U.S. in the late 1800s, the fast-growing plant has smothered many native plants throughout the South More than a decade's worth of studies have shown that extracts of kudzu can successfully reduce cravings and consumption of alcohol in both animals and humans. Now, researchers are exploring two ways of turning the plant into a...

Police in Bloomington say a 23-year-old man is in stable condition after he pretended that he was falling off a bridge over the Minnesota River, then actually fell off the bridge. Police got a call just before 5 a.m. Sunday from a 21-year-old man who said his friend fell off the Highway 77 bridge and into a marshy area about 30 feet below. The caller said he was driving north when his friend, who he said had been drinking, told him to pull into the bridge's emergency lane so he could urinate. The 23-year-old stood eventually climbed to the ledge...

Today I celebrate my 5th Year of sobriety (although there have been a few days recently that I almost wished I could drink, but not really). October 7, 2003 was my last drop of alcohol... I said "almost wished" above, I didn't really consider it...but we do live in "interesting times". Too interesting I think... Here was my first thread on the subject, way back in Dec 2004 when I was just a 14 month old sober guy: If You Suspect You Might Have A Drinking Problem (An Open Letter)Since then we have our Addiction Recovery Ping list which is...

A mix of pro-life, Hillary for President and Obama' 08 signs were pressed against the windows of Boston College's Hillside Cafe yesterday as hundreds of students crowded inside the cafe to quiz Chelsea Clinton about her mother's campaign and plans for the future. Hosted by the BC College Democrats, Sen. Hillary Clinton's daughter hosted a question-and-answer session titled, "Coffee with Chelsea." During the talk, Clinton fielded students' questions covering the presidential candidate's stance on issues ranging from college affordability to gay rights. Colm Willis, a BC senior, was one of about 20 students holding signs reading, "Chelsea, tell your mom...

Everyone who watches Oprah are the whitest people in the world . . . Even the black men who watch Oprah are white women while they watch Oprah . . . "She's like so unbelievably white . . . Why is...

SAO PAULO, May 7 - A beer taster for a Brazilian brewery won almost $50,000 in a court battle against the company, alleging he became an alcoholic while working there. The employee for Ambev, a leading Brazilian brewery, said the company did not provide health care in the event a beer taster developed alcoholism, O Globo reported Monday. A previous court had ruled in favor of Ambev, saying the company was not responsible for the unidentified man's affliction. The employee said he drank on average about 20 small beers ever day at work.

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President and Mrs. Bush spent the weekend in Washington where they attended the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner last night. The Washington Post described the President's appearance this way: The evening took a turn toward the somber when the President took the stage. After a videotaped message from David Letterman ("Top 10 George W. Bush Moments"), he said, "In light of this week's tragedy at Virginia Tech I've decided not to be funny." And with that he handed the lectern over to Rich Little. "I'm not here to make any political points," the veteran...

It was a quiet 75th birthday for Ted Kennedy yesterday. No one drowned or overdosed on drugs. There were no arrests for OUI or rape. No girls were crippled in overturned Jeeps, there were no Coast Guard rescues of beached boats. Not so long ago, when Teddy reached this kind of birthday milestone, he’d be treated to a big smooch-fest in the mainstream media. There’d be front-page stories about how he was “turning his life around” - the sort of nonsense you generally read about wannabe rappers gunned down in drive-by shootings. But yesterday, there was next to nothing in...

Talk to Sen. Ted Kennedy Thu Sep 28, 1:51 PM ET This was a last-minute addition to the Talk to Power schedule, so the time for questions and comments is shorter than usual. Sen. Kennedy will be fielding your comments over the next 24 hours and responding, via an interview with host Judy Woodruff, on Friday morning. The question of immigration and immigration reform is likely to loom large in this forum, as it has with previous Talk to Power guests. Sen. Kennedy,...

Americans still remember vividly the scenes from a year ago when Hurricane Katrina swept away entire communities, sent thousands of families for shelter in the Super Dome, and left hundreds of thousands more homeless and jobless. Americans throughout the land were moved to help in any way they could - sending donations and aid and volunteering to meet the needs of our fellow citizens. We responded because that's what Americans do. We care for our country, help our neighbors, and lend a hand to those in need. However, as we all painfully know, the Administration did not live up to...

I have had the honor of serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee for 43 years, during which I've participated in confirmation hearings for every one of the justices who now sit on the Supreme Court. Over that time, my colleagues and I have asked probing questions and listened attentively to substantive responses. Because we were able to learn a great deal about the nominees from those hearings, the Senate has rarely voted along party lines. I voted, for example, for three of President Ronald Reagan's five Supreme Court nominees... But the careful, bipartisan process of years past -- like so...

During a briefing with reporters yesterday, Majority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) said he was aware of Rep. Patrick Kennedy’s (D-R.I,) substance-abuse problem and had “noticed it before.” In response to a question about the handling of Kennedy’s early-morning car accident by the Capitol Police, Boehner indicated that it would be easier to make a judgment when all of the facts are released. He then elaborated on the question, saying he had known of Kennedy’s problem. “For those who have been around here, worked here, he has been fighting this disease for a long time, as has been testified to by...

Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy said yesterday that he is entering treatment for an addiction to prescription medications, an announcement that comes as police continue their investigation into a car crash involving the congressman near the Capitol. Calling his addiction a "chronic disease," Kennedy said he does not even recall the accident, which occurred early Thursday and raised questions about his behavior and how U.S. Capitol Police deal with members of Congress. The congressman's office has said Kennedy (D-R.I.) was disoriented behind the wheel because he had taken prescription medication to calm stomach inflammation and to help him sleep. No one...

Rep. Patrick Kennedy (news, bio, voting record) crashed his car near the Capitol early Thursday, and a police official said he appeared intoxicated. Kennedy said he had taken sleep medication and a prescription anti-nausea drug that can cause drowsiness. Kennedy, D-R.I., addressed the issue after a spate of news reports. His initial statement said: "I consumed no alcohol prior to the incident."'Later, however, he issued a longer statement saying the attending physician for Congress had prescribed Phenergan on Tuesday to treat Kennedy's gastroenteritis.Kennedy said he returned to his Capitol Hill home on Wednesday evening after a final series of votes...

Once upon a time, no one whipped up conservative rage like Ted Kennedy. Back in the day, the senator from Massachusetts wasn’t just a misguided Democrat — he was the Liberal Great Satan, a genuine menace to all things good and holy. Consider Teddy Bare: The Last of the Kennedy Clan, a 1971 screed by Zad Rust dedicated to the accident that killed Mary Jo Kopechne two years earlier. The circumstances of the case were ugly: after driving his car off a bridge and into the waters of Poucha Pond, Kennedy swam to safety and fled, instead of immediately notifying...

The Supreme Court of the United States is the ultimate arbiter of our Constitution and, as such, it is the final protector of individual rights and liberties in this great nation. So when we vote to confirm a justice for a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, we have an awesome responsibility to get it right. And when we vote to confirm the Chief Justice of the United States, we have an even greater responsibility, because the stakes are even higher. The Chief Justice sets the tone for the Court and, through leadership, influences Court decisions in ways both subtle...

I recently had what is called an “alcohol depravation seizure”. I have had a couple of those before. You basically pass out when you are trying not to drink. What I object to is that I had no voice in the medical care which was given to me. I was awake and oriented x 4 after I came to (not long). I knew who I was, where I was, when it was, and what had happened. I was essentially okay. They could have let me out. But they still did things to me which I did not want or need....

Berlin, June 15: A German court sent to a psychiatric institution a man who cut off his own penis because of the incessant sexual demands of his wife, whom he then killed with the same knife. The court in Kassel in central Germany, heard yesterday that the wife of the man, 38, an alcoholic of Ghanaian origin, was obsessed with his organ and so he sliced it off with a long bread knife and threw it at her feet. He then cut the throat of his 50-year-old wife. The severed member was found and stitched back on.

DENVER - Hunter S. Thompson, who shot himself to death at his Aspen-area home Sunday at 67, said several times he wanted an artillery send-off for his remains. "There's no question, I'm sure that's what he...

February 24, 2005OP-ED COLUMNISTSwifties Slime Again By MAUREEN DOWD ASHINGTON Instead of trying to destroy AARP, Republicans should be signing up the seniors' lobby to find Osama. AARP's super-relentless intelligence network is certainly better than that doddering C.I.A's. Osama has to have turned 50, and AARP somehow knows where everyone who has turned 50 lives. But no. NEW ORLEANS A fourth-grade girl will be able to return to her suburban New Orleans school tomorrow after serving a nine-day suspension for bringing in what appeared to be Jell-O shots. Neither police nor school officials will say whether the gelatin cups actually contained alcohol. The appearance they contained alcohol was enough to discipline her under school rules. The girl's mother works at a French Quarter bar. She has insisted the Jell-O cups were non-alcoholic. Since the election of 2004, conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage has focused his energy and talent on bashing the war in Iraq, ridiculing President Bush and lashing out at Rush Limbaugh. "New Voices for a Stronger Democratic Party." It will help them into the ocean. It is immensely popular with the religious right wing Republicans, with whom Bloomberg the mayor consorts these days.
