A network is being created to help illegal immigrants avoid that dreaded knock on the door in the wee hours. In a recent two-week sweep touted as the largest of its kind, agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, arrested 1,300 illegal immigrants in the Southland at their homes, in jails or at work. Antonio Bernabe, an organizer for the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, hopes to prevent ICE from ever again rounding up that many people during its large operations. "The raids are supposed to be targeting the criminals but they are breaking up families,...

National Emergency Alerts To Ping Cell Phones, PDAs Government Updating Cold-War Era Alert System POSTED: 11:52 am EDT July 12, 2006 WASHINGTON -- We interrupt your cell phone call with this important announcement: The government will soon be sending warnings of national emergencies on wireless phones, Web sites and hand-held computers. The new digital system will update the emergency alerts planned -- but never used -- during the Cold War in the event of a nuclear strike. More likely, these 21st-century technologies will carry warnings of natural disasters and terrorist attacks. The Homeland Security Department, through the Federal...

Has anyone noticed how Fox News Channel has oscillated wildly out of control this summer with their Fox News Alerts? It seems that the alerts are being used for everything from legitimate breaking news events (shuttle landing safely) to events that no one in their right mind would classify as breaking news (President Bush signs the Energy Bill--what a shocker that is!). Not only that, but they are now being used over and over again during a two-hour period to announce the same news event and it seems like every prime time show is started with a Fox News Alert...

A 27-year-old electrician, de Menezes was by all accounts totally unconnected to terrorism. But through his behavior and cruel coincidence, de Menezes gave police good reason to think he might be planning to detonate a bomb. In the age of terrorism, police can kill an innocent man and still be doing the right thing. This strange new reality makes us all players in a film-noir existence. Film noir refers to the eerie postwar movies in which characters grope through a world of dark menace and unanswered questions. They don't know what's going on, only that danger hovers. Here in Grand...

The man, described as white with dark hair, was seen taking pictures outside the refineries, all located on the...

(Newark-WABC, October 14, 2004) — He looked like any student attending college in New Jersey. But in reality, FBI officials believe he was sent here by Osama bin Laden to scout out possible targets for a terrorist attack. Eyewitness News' Kemberly Richardson reports. Sources tell Eyewitness News they are making headway with this investigation. They say as they canvas the area showing people a picture of Dhiren Barot they are getting confirmation he was here. He was seen at tourist areas, universities, and perhaps the most unsettling place: Right in front of the Prudential building. A senior FBI agent tells...

The latest disclosures of al Qaeda's plans for another major attack in New York City in hopes of disrupt ing the election should finally put the lie to those who claim the recent terror alert was a politically timed sham. Like Howard Dean, the defeated White House hopeful and now surrogate for John Kerry who charged that "every time something happens that's not good for President Bush, he plays this trump card, which is terrorism." In fact, far from being a campaign ploy, the alert declared by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge was based on new, specific information that was...

How else to describe his comments on Fox News Live only moments ago? This is not an exact quote but here is the gist of what he said from memory: "Why are we having all these terror alerts? I think people are getting tired of them. I wish we could go back to the way it was before when we were thwarting terrorists and nobody ever knew anything. I would rather our intelligence community just thwart the terrorists, if they can, without telling us anything about it." Huh? One is left wondering how in the world Mr. Crowley ever came...

Hastert Reveals Three Other Planes Hit Distress /// Buttons Tuesday... Amid the aftermath of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) informed Members at a closed-door briefing Tuesday night that three commercial planes overseas had pressed their "terrorist button" and were still in the air as of 5:30 that evening. Although someone on the plane had pressed the device designed to indicate a hijacking, Hastert reported that there was no foul play involved on the planes and that intelligence officials were simply responding to "false alarms," ROLLCALLDAILY reports...

A local dive shop owner says FBI agents are wasting their time scouring Keys dive shops for information about suspicious people who took scuba classes. On May 23, the FBI released a warning that some terrorists had been seeking "an offensive scuba diver capability." Concerned that future terrorist attacks might come by sea, the bureau apparently is compiling a database of all the country's certified scuba divers. "Why spin your wheels interviewing the dive shops when they should be going right to PADI?" asked Capt. Bill Grosscup, owner of Captain's Corner on Greene Street. The Professional Association of Diving Instructors,...

POLITICS IN BRIEF Kucinich says alert used as scare tactic 12/28/2003 The Bush administration is using elevated terror alerts for political gain, Democrat Dennis J. Kucinich said. The Ohio representative, campaigning at a library services company in central New Hampshire on Friday, said that if administration officials have information about terror threats, they should act on it, instead of advertising the threat to scare Americans. "Why didn't they just put extra security out?" he asked. "They are building up fear to become more powerful politically." Kucinich, who will begin airing TV ads in New Hampshire on Jan. 4, said he...

March 18 — With the nation back on high alert and officials warning that terrorists may already be planning major new attacks, ABCNEWS has learned the government will begin detaining dozens of suspected Saddam Hussein sympathizers in at least five U.S. cities this week. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge today cited the danger of attacks by Iraqi agents in the United States and overseas when he announced the national threat level was moving from yellow, or "elevated," to orange, which means "high." "Iraqi state agents, Iraqi surrogate groups, other regional extremist organizations and ad hoc groups, disgruntled individuals may use...

"They just simply accessed the Web site." Images downloaded from www.worldstadiums.com. included the Edward Jones Dome, home to the NFL's St. Louis Rams, and Indianapolis' RCA Dome, he said.
