The ongoing controversy surrounding the debate over illegal immigration and border security issues in the United States, specifically as it applies to the porous U.S.-Mexico frontier and the status of millions of undocumented workers and other migrants that enter the country each year from Mexico, continues to dominate headlines. Although the overwhelming majority of those entering the United States from Mexico each day are in search of opportunity, many observers worry that it is only a matter of time before al-Qaeda exploits this vulnerability for its own ends. In assessing this threat, Muslim communities in Mexico have come under increasing...

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Authorities have seen no signs of al Qaeda trying to insert operatives into the United States from Mexico, but the militant group has considered doing so, a U.S. intelligence official said on Friday. The comments by Charles Allen, Homeland Security undersecretary for intelligence and analysis, could undercut one argument by advocates in and out of government for get-tough tactics to fight illegal crossings at the southern U.S. border -- that they are needed to fight terrorism. In contrast, at least one Islamist militant has been caught trying to enter the United States by land to attempt an...

Islamic Radicalism in Mexico: The Threat from South of the Border By Chris Zambelis The ongoing controversy surrounding the debate over illegal immigration and border security issues in the United States, specifically as it applies to the porous U.S.-Mexico frontier and the status of millions of undocumented workers and other migrants that enter the country each year from Mexico, continues to dominate headlines. MEXICO CITY Mexico says its arrested four Iraqis who were trying to sneak into the United States without the proper documents. Mexico's Attorney General's office says police -- acting on an anonymous tip -- found the four aboard a bus in the northern city of Navajoa (nav-ah-HO-. That's about 375 miles south of the Arizona border. The statement says the Iraqis were in Mexico illegally. Officials are investigating the background of the four and trying to determine how they got into Mexico. Many undocumented Iraqi nationals have been captured in Mexican territory en route to the U-S border. None have...

TUCSON, ARIZ. – A top priority of the United States government is to prevent a determined terrorist from crossing the US- Mexico border. It is also becoming a primary mission for Mexico - and the first place it's focusing on is the 375-mile, desolate stretch of land that abuts Arizona. Last March, US officials intercepted a letter purportedly written by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Al Qaeda leader in Iraq, who suggested to his acolytes that it would be easy to infiltrate the US through the southern border. Between August, when the checkpoints became operational, and December, Mexican officials stopped 1,277...

He denies it all now. It is unclear why he would have asserted it all in this phone call, however, if it were not true. Of course, there could be any number of reasons. But this case bears monitoring. The attorney for a jailed Gulf Cartel member cited in the incident, however, says his client was...

Infiltration from the south feared Terrorist smuggling denied by admitted drug runner BY SERGIO CHAPA The Brownsville Herald January 15, 2006 — The back door to this country is unguarded, and the locks in place to protect it against terrorists are easy to pick. Lawmakers and border security critics have repeatedly made this point, stressing the need for more funding, patrols and protection against illegal entry on the U.S.-Mexico border. Officials are pointing to records in a South Texas drug case with alleged terrorist ties that they say underscores the lack of preparedness here. The attorney for a jailed Gulf...

It's time to recognize that America's war on terror is being fought in places other than Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, our most critical theater of war is being fought at the US-Mexico border. Our enemies are unlawful migrants who willfully violate our borders and thumb their noses at U.S. immigration laws. For the most part, they are third-world miscreants who, once in America, are bankrupting our health care and education systems. Illegal immigrants avail themselves of health care with no ability or desire to pay for services received. Although their unpaid bills are forcing scores of hospitals here to...

Arabic belongings have turned up along the Texas-Mexican border - including juice boxes with Arabic writing and a 9/11-like image of a plane hitting a building - according to Sen. John Cornyn. "I will tell you that with my own eyes I have seen [this material in] Border Patrol anecdotal reports," the Texas Republican tells Human Events. Cornyn is chairman of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship. "Two examples," he said, were, "[photos of] juice boxes with Arabic writing on them that were collected by agents around the Laredo area." Cornyn said he was shown another picture...

A U.S. senator says he's been shown "anecdotal evidence" suggesting an Arabic presence along the U.S.-Mexico border, noting the Bush administration has not publicly released the information because it is "a matter of intelligence." Human Events reported that Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, head of the Senate Judiciary Committee's subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship, has seen beverage boxes with Arabic language and other items, including the image of a commercial airliner striking a building. Cornyn, who is working with other senators to craft legislation that supports President Bush's proposed guest-worker program but adds stricter border and worksite enforcement measures,...

The wheels that have slowly begun to turn in response to growing concern over the security of our southern border, may need to turn faster. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) has been outspoken on the lack of security along the Mexican border. He is now reporting that Arabic belongings have turned up along the Texas-Mexican border - including juice boxes with Arabic writing and a 9/11-like image of a plane hitting a building. Last week Rep. John Culberson announced that an al Qaida operative who was on the FBI's terrorist watch list had been nabbed along the Mexican border and was...

An Al Qaida operative who was on the FBI's terrorist watch list was recently captured near the Mexican border, housed in a Texas jail and turned over to federal agents, Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, said on Friday. "A confirmed al Qaida terrorist, an Iraqi national, was held in the Brewster County jail," Rep. Culberson told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity. "He was captured in Mexico. This was within the last six weeks. He was turned over to the FBI." The Texas Republican said he obtained the stunning information about the terrorist's capture "from the sheriffs who were directly involved. "In...

TIJUANA, Mexico - A restaurateur in this border city ran another business smuggling Lebanese compatriots into the United States, some with connections to Hezbollah. A Sept. 11 commission staff report called him the only "human smuggler with suspected links to terrorists" convicted in the United States. But he is not unique, according to an Associated Press investigation based on government and court records and scores of interviews. Many smuggling pipelines through Latin America and Canada have illegally channeled thousands of people from countries identified by the U.S. government as sponsors or supporters of terrorism.

A Lebanese-born British citizen detained this week on Mexico's Baja California peninsula is believed linked to extremist organizations with ties to the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Mexican prosecutors said. Mexico's federal attorney general's office said late Tuesday that U.S. authorities linked Amer Haykel ''to extremist groups believed to be involved with the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, in New York.'' It did not say if he faced any charges.

MEXICO CITY, June 22 (Reuters) - A man arrested in Mexico and named as a key terrorism suspect with possible links to the Sept. 11 attackers, is in fact a tourist who poses no security risk, red-faced Mexican authorities said on Wednesday. The attorney general's office set bells ringing on Tuesday when it announced it had detained Lebanese-born British citizen Amer Haykel at a fire station in the state of Baja California Sur in cooperation with U.S. authorities. It said Haykel was wanted in the United States and was "linked to extremist groups presumably involved in the Sept. 11,...

Islam on march south of border Islam is on the move in Mexico and throughout Latin America, making dramatic gains in converting the native population, increasing immigration, establishing businesses and charities and attracting attention from U.S. government officials who have asked their neighbors to the south to keep an eye on foreign Muslim groups. The monitoring of foreign groups is intended to "avoid problems in Mexico that have an impact in the United States," said the head of the Attorney General Office's special terrorism investigation unit, Gen. Jorge Serrano. "The ones who ... are being watched by migration (authorities) are...

MEXICO CITY - Mexico's government is monitoring the country's tiny Islamic communities as part of an arrangement with U.S. authorities, the federal attorney general's office confirmed Friday. Officials on Friday confirmed statements made the previous day by Jorge Serrano, the head of the Attorney General's anti-terrorism investigations office. Serrano said Mexico was engaged in surveillance of the country's Islamic communities. There are about 3,000 Muslims among Mexico's population of 100 million people, and none has been connected with or implicated in any terrorist activity. Serrano told local media Thursday that Mexican authorities paid attention to the movements of such Islamic...

Today, President Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin and Mexican President Vicente Fox will meet in Crawford, Texas, for a summit that is not expected to deal with immigration. That is disappointing, especially since Mr. Fox in recent days downplayed the possibility that al Qaeda terrorists could cross into the United States from Mexico, ridiculed the San Diego border fence to curb illegal crossings and vowed to stamp out Arizona's Project Minuteman. Most troublesome was Mr. Fox's dismissal of worries about al Qaeda crossing the border.

THE WASHINGTON TIMES Concern by U.S. intelligence officials that al Qaeda operatives have targeted the U.S.-Mexico border as a route into the United States has fueled criticism of President Bush's proposal to hire 210 new Border Patrol agents instead of the 2,000 proposed in the intelligence overhaul bill he signed in December. Both Democrats and Republicans have challenged the president's 2006 fiscal budget request, including Sen. Robert C. Byrd, West Virginia Democrat and ranking member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, who said it "ignores the stark reality of the resources needed to secure the homeland."

MEXICO CITY - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites) said Thursday that al-Qaida and other terrorist groups are doing everything they can to get into the United States through Mexico and Canada. Rice, on her first trip to Mexico since taking over at the State Department, in late January, echoed concerns raised by government officials in congressional testimony last month about the motives of the terrorist network blamed for the Sept. 11 attacks. "Indeed we have from time to time had reports about al-Qaida trying to use our southern border but also trying to use our northern...

MATAMOROS, MEXICO -- The chief officer of the American Consulate in the border city of Matamoros says he is concerned about the Central American Mara Salvatrucha gang helping al-Qaeda. WASHINGTON — Rep. Solomon Ortiz has been sounding an alarm since last summer that al-Qaida might exploit the porousness of the nation's southern border and now the Department of Homeland Security agrees with him. Admiral James Loy, deputy Homeland Security secretary, said in written testimony he gave the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday that "recent information from ongoing investigations, detentions and emerging threat streams strongly suggests that al-Qaida has considered using the southwestern border to infiltrate the United States." Loy said that al-Qaida operatives believe they can pay to get into the country through Mexico and that entering illegally is...

MEXICO CITY (AP) - CIA Director Porter Goss's remarks about the potential for pre-election instability in Mexico provoked banner newspaper headlines Thursday and prompted the interior minister to accuse the American spy chief of meddling in Mexico's internal affairs. During testimony before a Senate panel Wednesday, Goss briefly mentioned Mexico in a report on "potential areas for instability" or "flashpoints" in some of the eight Latin American nations with elections next year. "Campaigning for the 2006 presidential election in Mexico is likely to stall progress on fiscal, labor and energy reforms," Goss said. Interior Minister Santiago Creek called a news...

WASHINGTON, Feb. 16 - New intelligence information strongly suggests that Al Qaeda has considered infiltrating the United States through the Mexican border, top government officials told Congress on Wednesday. In a wide-ranging assessment of threats to American security, including those posed by Iran and North Korea, the officials also said intelligence indicated that terrorist organizations remained intent on obtaining and using devastating weapons against the United States. "It may only be a matter of time before Al Qaeda or another group attempts to use chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons," Porter J. Goss, the new director of central intelligence, told...

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico (Reuters) - Islam has joined a battle for the hearts and minds of Mexico's volatile Tzotzil Indians in Chiapas state, home of Zapatista rebels and a hotbed of sectarian strife between Christians. Good evening. In August, The Investigators on Eyewitness News 4 first reported the possible threat of terrorists using the Arizona/Mexico border to cross into the U.S. While local government officials and immigration advocates questioned the validity of such a threat, our report, "Terrorist Alley," gained national attention. Just a few weeks ago, high-level sources told a Washington newspaper that Chechen terrorists have entered the U.S. through our state. Now, we've uncovered even more evidence that the threat along our border is real. "The story you did was 100% accurate. It showed what's happening on the border on a daily basis....

Al-Qaida plans to use Mexico as a key infiltration route for sending operatives into the United States, according to a Mexican newspaper. Mexican intelligence agencies have identified at least two routes for al-Qaida infiltration, the Proceso newspaper reported last week. The infiltration plan calls for terrorists to depart South Africa for London and then take a non-stop flight to Mexico or a Central American nation and from there use migrant smuggling routes to reach northern Mexico and the United States. Two of three suspected al-Qaida terrorists recently arrested in England and Pakistan had passed through Mexico with South African passports....

Arab terrorists 'are getting into the US over Mexican border'By Julian Coman in Washington(Filed: 15/08/2004) President Bush has launched a drive to halt illegal immigration across America's porous southern border, amid growing fears that terrorists may be using Mexico as a base camp before heading to Arizona, Texas and California.A string of alarming incidents has convinced Bush administration officials that lax immigration rules, designed to cope with the huge numbers of illegal entrants from Mexico, have become a significant loophole in the war on terror.Over the past month, border agents from Arizona and Texas have anonymously reported recent encounters with...
