"The filing of this notice is not an admission by the defendant that he has previously given voluntarily consent but is designed to put the government on legal notice that, to the extent the defendant has previously given any voluntary consent to search,...

Paul L. The fifty-acre compound is easy to find since the main road leading to it has been named Sheikh Gilani Lane in honor of the guru and founder of a terrorist organization with close ties to Osama bin Laden. When the Roman Empire fell – and scholars still debate how hard, and why – much was lost, including arts, literacy, public works, and the rule of law; but the most significant was the loss of commerce. The archeological record shows a drastic drop in quantity and quality of goods and materials in the 5th century, indicating the loss of artisans and skills. Without the umbrella of security, commerce faltered, forcing regions to become more self-reliant. Specialized skills fell aside as sustainment skills became critical. Artisans and artists were replaced by the jack-of-all-trades. It would remain thus until the relative...

An Arab nation with ties to 9-11 has pledged a major endowment to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, even as the Washington-based nonprofit group insists it receives no foreign support. The United Arab Emirates recently announced on its official government website that it has set up an endowment serving as a source of income for CAIR. The amount of the funding is undisclosed, but sources say it will be enough to help CAIR finance the construction of a new $24 million office building and a planned $50 million public-relations campaign aimed at repairing Islam's -- and the UAE's -- image...

In our war against Islamo-fascist terrorism, we face enemies both overt and covert. The overt enemies are, of course, the terrorists themselves. Their motives are clear: They hate our society because of its freedoms and liberties, and want to make us all submit to their totalitarian form of Islam. They are busy trying to wreak harm on us in any way they can. Against them we can fight back, as we did when British authorities arrested the men and women who were plotting to blow up a dozen airliners over the Atlantic. Our covert enemies are harder to identify, for...

Sunni Muslims Standing in Unity with Shiite Hezbollah By Chris Zambelis The latest crisis in the Middle East involving Hezbollah and Israel and ongoing sectarian violence in Iraq has focused attention on an emerging divide between Sunnis and Shiites. The positions of heads of state in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Pakistan, among others, who represent predominantly Sunni populations, in not taking a stronger stance in opposing Israel lends credence to the theory that Sunnis are tacitly siding with Israel against Hezbollah in order to check Shiite and, by extension, Iranian influence. In reality, the opposite is the case. Regional...

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The head of the Republican Party accused Democrats of being willing to surrender the tools necessary to combat terrorism as the GOP tries to capitalize on its national security advantage in a tough election year. Faced with President Bush's low approval ratings and diminishing support for the Iraq war, the Republican strategy is to make the war on terrorism a central campaign issue and argue that Democrats hold a pre-Sept. 11 view of the world. Ken Mehlman, the chairman of the Republican National Committee, stressed that argument in a speech Friday at the organization's two-day summer meeting,...

You fight the global war against jihadist Islam with the political parties you have. We have two. One is the Republican party, led by George W. Bush. Its heart and mind are mostly in the right place. Its performance as a governing party in time of war is, admittedly, another matter. Do we have a strategy for victory in Iraq? Not if one judges by Donald Rumsfeld's testimony last week before the Senate Armed Services Committee. It shouldn't be too much to ask for competent leadership at the Defense Department in time of war, leadership characterized by a willingness to...

The New Republic's ridiculous claim about U.S. adherents to the religion of peace. “It’s startling,” proclaims Spencer Ackerman in a New Republic cover story dated today, “how few American Muslim extremists there actually are.” The article, “Religious Protection: Why American Muslims haven’t turned to terrorism,” contrasts American Muslims with their European counterparts, whom he finds have turned to terrorism. American Muslims are not terrorists? What is Ackerman thinking? The very same day that the Clintons go to Long Island to meet with the TWA Flight 800 families, security guard Richard Jewell is patrolling the grounds of Centennial Park in Atlanta. He's a little Barney Fife-ish, but a good guy and very observant. Right around midnight, Jewell spots a large, olive-green, military-style backpack, known as an Alice pack, under a bench. He immediately shares this information with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. When the GBI cannot find the pack's owner, the GBI officer and Jewell begin to clear an area around the pack. Soon afterward, the pack explodes. Two...

BLY, Ore. — This hard-knocks hamlet seems an unlikely place to search for clues to the al-Qaida terrorist network. It sits on an arid plateau in Southern Oregon, about 50 miles east of Klamath Falls. With a population of about 250, it has a couple of cafes and small stores, an antique shop, and the razed foundation of an abandoned lumber mill. But in late 1999, federal authorities and other sources say, the area had something far more unusual: militant Muslims scouting a ranch outside of town as a possible training camp for jihad fighters. That aborted effort has now...

Numerous parallels are visible between the totalitarianism of Soviet Communism and that of Wahhabism, the Saudi-funded movement to seize control of world Islam. Aside from their ideological similarities and the common elements in the struggle of each for power, there is the striking matter of their identical tactics in penetration of the United States. The Communist Party, USA, claimed to lead and, in effect, represent the entire labor and left movement, when its constituency was restricted to a narrow band of fanatics and agents of a foreign regime. The Wahhabi lobby - the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), American...
