    My Gun Case | June 04, 2010 | Humblegunner
I have a question for our resident Free Republic firearms experts. Several years ago I purchased a Mosin Nagant M-44 Carbine at a gun show. (Винтовка Мосина 7.62 x 54R) I like it. I have never fired it. Why? I don't trust the ammunition. I have several boxes (unmarked) of what the vendor at the gun show CLAIMED was 7.62 x 54R. Trouble is, the base of the casings are NOT stamped with the caliber. What they have stamped there is 21 and 87. My camera is not good enough to pick this up well, but you get the idea:...

WASHINGTON, June 1, 2010 Some homes have attics, basements or garages full of extra things that simply dont get thrown away. International forces in Afghanistan have found that such a hoarding mentality applies to ammunition, regardless of its quality. During a May 28 "DoD Live" bloggers roundtable, Army Col. Ronald L. Green, logistics director for Combined Security Transition Command Afghanistan, discussed the dangers surrounding old ammunition stockpiles and the challenges the NATO training mission faces in getting rid of them. Over the past three years, the training command has identified 6,325 metric tons of unsafe and surplus ammunition, Green...

The Times (the British one) has a story about the continuing debate over the 7.62mm round versus the 5.56mm as employed in the long range firefights in Afghanistan. The story asserts that the 5.56mm round used in the M4 rifle lacks sufficient velocity and killing power in long-range firefights. As Defense Tech readers know, weve covered this issue before. As for the stopping power of the 5.56mm round, that very topic came up at a roundtable discussion I attended with the Armys Program Executive Office Soldier last month at Aberdeen Test Center, Md. It led to an interesting discussion about...

Illinois gun blogger Thirdpower notes that the state's budget is in such dire straits that the state prison system is finding it difficult to buy ammunition. The Illinois Department of Corrections was forced to make an emergency purchase of ammunition last month because of the state's inability to pay its bills. The purchase happened after one of the state's ammunition vendors, Shore Galleries Inc., refused to ship bullets unless the company was paid upfront. The state owes the Lincoln-wood firm $6,000. The department was able to find a new vendor quickly in Indiana and ordered 761,000 rounds for nearly $200,000....

The cure that was arranged by Montana Senators Baucus and Tester to fix the intended military destruction of once-fired cartridge brass last year appears to be suffering from a fatal end-run. Interested persons will remember that a year ago, helpful intervention by Montana's senators persuaded the Department of Defense to rescind a fresh DoD directive to military installation commanders requiring them to destroy once-fired brass, prior to selling it at auction into the civilian marketplace for ammunition reloading and other purposes. An end-run is being done around the rescinding order through quiet and sweetheart side deals with installation commanders that...

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has notified members that, as demand for ammunition continues to outpace supply, "it is critically important that an amendment authored by Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) to a seemingly obscure hazardous material bill (HR 4016) be attached to the legislation during consideration on the House floor." The NSSF notes that the amendment being pushed by Graves will help protect the shipment of materials necessary for the manufacturing of ammunition, and warns that without the Graves Amendment, the rate of production will slip, perhaps precipitously. In turn, decreased production of ammunition will lead to decreased availability. This...

Some more ruminations on the ammo shortage... Die Time: In comments yesterday, Ed Foster mentioned "die time". This is exactly why you can't get, for example, .380 right now. At most manufacturers, the machinery they use to load .380 (which uses different "dies" to load different calibers) is only used for that purpose for a small portion of the year; the rest of the time it's used to load more high volume stuff, like 9mm. They churn out .380 for a couple of months, say, at the end of the year, and it's enough to hold the market over 'til...

Many of you may have rec'd and email about the enactment of something called " Ammunition Accountability Legislation" that will ban the sale of ammunition. Is this just more internet paranoia or is there something to it??
  • DOD Ends Sale of Expended Military Brass to Remanufacturers

Now it has come we know what they intend to do. It is an end-run around Congress. They don't need to try to ban guns--they don't need to fight a massive battle to attempt gun registration, or limit "assault" weapon sales. Nope. All they have to do is limit the amount of ammunition available to the civilian market, and when bullets dry up, guns will be useless.

Around Wichita, the supply of ammunition -- particularly for handguns -- is not keeping pace with a strong demand. The demand is emptying shelves at the big discount stores and smaller shooting ranges, business owners and gun merchants say. Despite the slumping overall economy, two Wichita indoor-shooting ranges and a Goddard gun and hunting supply store say they are doing a robust business. Business is good, they say, because of a mix of political and economic factors. On the political front, they say, gun owners and enthusiasts appear to be buying more guns and ammo out of concern that President...

Local sportsmen and gun enthusiasts looking for ammunition are coming up empty handed, as a national ammunition shortage leaves gun barrels and shop shelves empty.

"DURHAM -- The legislative agenda proposed by the Durham City Council on Monday included measures that would restrict handgun ammunition sales and increase the costs of registering a car." ... ...snip ... "Durham's resolution on ammunition sales is a simplified version of the "Bullet Ownership Bill" promoted by Durham minister Melvin Whitley. It would modify existing state laws to allow handgun-ammunition sales only to those holding a pistol purchase or concealed weapons permit."

It looks like those who said the Obama Administration would strike while the iron is hot may have been correct, and the Administration may be doing it in a way that does not require them to even get a vote in Congress. In this morning's edition of the Shooting Wire, Jim Shepherd writes that Canadian officials have it on "good authority" our State Department may be on the verge of cutting off all imports of certain calibers of ammunition.

TAMPA - After President Barack Obama won the election, people flooded gun stores because of speculation that he may limit gun ownership or raise taxes on them. Even though neither has happened, the amount of people wanting to get their hands on a gun hasn't gone down. Scott Patrick is the General Manager of the Shoot Straight gun range in Tampa. He says the number of people coming into his store is still going up. "For whatever reason, whether it's the economy or crime, people don't feel safe," he said. Patrick is having serious trouble keeping all kinds of fire...
  • Ammunition bans, like other gun control laws, promise to be as ineffective as most prohibitions

by J.D. Tuccille, Civil Liberties Examiner A commonly available reloading press for manufacturing ammunition at home. Hobbled by the Supreme Court decision in D.C. v. Heller, recognizing that individuals have a constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms, gun control advocates are roaming the land with virtual lightbulbs over their heads. "Ah ha," they say. "You can have your guns, but we'll control your ammunition." Well, they're not the first to think of the idea, and they won't be the first to discover that "banning"' isn't synonymous with "eliminating." California already has a law requiring firearms to include "microstamping"...

Gun manufacturing in the Pakistan boondocks. In the clip below you'll see an amazing 'industry' in Pakistan turning out 1000 weapons a day and have done so for seventy years. That is over 25 million firearms...and we think they can be subdued...maybe after killing them all. Mr. Obama has a tall job in front of him, espescially if he believes that he can overcome Islam and their arms to achieve their end... Have a look...
  • Wal-mart Ammo Stock Dwindling

Wal-mart Ammo Stock is not being replenished from their warehouse. Is seems that corporate Wal-mart does not want to have it's warehouse stocked with new ammunition merchandise after Obama takes office. If Obama issues an executive order halting, restricting, or banning ammo sales, wal-mart and other retailers maybe left with stock they cannot sell at retail or return to their supplier.
