    My Gun Case | June 04, 2010 | Humblegunner
I have a question for our resident Free Republic firearms experts. Several years ago I purchased a Mosin Nagant M-44 Carbine at a gun show. (Винтовка Мосина 7.62 x 54R) I like it. I have never fired it. Why? I don't trust the ammunition. I have several boxes (unmarked) of what the vendor at the gun show CLAIMED was 7.62 x 54R. Trouble is, the base of the casings are NOT stamped with the caliber. What they have stamped there is 21 and 87. My camera is not good enough to pick this up well, but you get the idea:...

  • Old Ammunition Poses Problem in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, June 1, 2010 Some homes have attics, basements or garages full of extra things that simply dont get thrown away. International forces in Afghanistan have found that such a hoarding mentality applies to ammunition, regardless of its quality. During a May 28 "DoD Live" bloggers roundtable, Army Col. Ronald L. Green, logistics director for Combined Security Transition Command Afghanistan, discussed the dangers surrounding old ammunition stockpiles and the challenges the NATO training mission faces in getting rid of them. Over the past three years, the training command has identified 6,325 metric tons of unsafe and surplus ammunition, Green...

The Times (the British one) has a story about the continuing debate over the 7.62mm round versus the 5.56mm as employed in the long range firefights in Afghanistan. The story asserts that the 5.56mm round used in the M4 rifle lacks sufficient velocity and killing power in long-range firefights. As Defense Tech readers know, weve covered this issue before. As for the stopping power of the 5.56mm round, that very topic came up at a roundtable discussion I attended with the Armys Program Executive Office Soldier last month at Aberdeen Test Center, Md. It led to an interesting discussion about...
  • Illinois Department of Corrections buying ammo on (not very good) credit

Illinois gun blogger Thirdpower notes that the state's budget is in such dire straits that the state prison system is finding it difficult to buy ammunition. The Illinois Department of Corrections was forced to make an emergency purchase of ammunition last month because of the state's inability to pay its bills. The purchase happened after one of the state's ammunition vendors, Shore Galleries Inc., refused to ship bullets unless the company was paid upfront. The state owes the Lincoln-wood firm $6,000. The department was able to find a new vendor quickly in Indiana and ordered 761,000 rounds for nearly $200,000....

The cure that was arranged by Montana Senators Baucus and Tester to fix the intended military destruction of once-fired cartridge brass last year appears to be suffering from a fatal end-run. Interested persons will remember that a year ago, helpful intervention by Montana's senators persuaded the Department of Defense to rescind a fresh DoD directive to military installation commanders requiring them to destroy once-fired brass, prior to selling it at auction into the civilian marketplace for ammunition reloading and other purposes. An end-run is being done around the rescinding order through quiet and sweetheart side deals with installation commanders that...

We are doing our annual review of emergency preparedness supplies and procedures. One possible situation is closure of commercial ammunition sources during a civil unrest situation. We would appreciate opinions on the most likely and second most likely available hand gun ammo in such a situation.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has notified members that, as demand for ammunition continues to outpace supply, "it is critically important that an amendment authored by Rep. Sam Graves (R-Mo.) to a seemingly obscure hazardous material bill (HR 4016) be attached to the legislation during consideration on the House floor." The NSSF notes that the amendment being pushed by Graves will help protect the shipment of materials necessary for the manufacturing of ammunition, and warns that without the Graves Amendment, the rate of production will slip, perhaps precipitously. In turn, decreased production of ammunition will lead to decreased availability. This...
  • Americans Buy Enough Ammunition In 12 Months To Equal Two Boxes For Everyone In The USA

A record setting 12 billion rounds of ammunition have been bought by Americans in the last 12 month That's up two to five billion over a normal year. With a U.S. population estimated at 305 million at the beginning of 2009, the ammo sales in the last year amount to almost two 20 round boxes for every man, woman, and child in America... There are a lot of reasons why ammunition sales are high. Some are economic reasons, and some are government related. In addition to two wars going on, there's target shooting, hunting, and Law Enforcement use where department's...

18:28 PDT SACRAMENTO -- People buying ammunition in California will soon have to be thumbprinted and dealers will have to keep records of sales, under legislation that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law. More News After vetoing similar bills three times since 2004, Schwarzenegger signed AB962 by Assemblyman Kevin de Len, D-Los Angeles, on Sunday, saying he now believes it will promote public safety. The measure is California's first statewide regulation of ammunition sales. It survived close votes in both the Assembly and state Senate and strong opposition from gun-rights organizations, which succeeded in stripping a provision that would have...

California Legislature to Consider Anti-Gun Bills Very Soon Please Contact Your State Legislators Immediately! As we have reported, there are two very serious anti-gun bills pending action in Sacramento. These bills could be heard as early as Thursday so it is critical that your contact your legislators in opposition. Assembly Bill 962 is currently awaiting action in the Senate. Sponsored by Assembly Member Kevin De Leon (D-45), AB962 would make it a crime to privately transfer more than 50 rounds of ammunition per month, even between family and friends, unless you are registered as a handgun ammunition vendor in the...

It's called the Ammunition Accountability Act (AAA). You've got to love the name. It sounds so noble. But remember the great gun writer, Mel Tappan's, universal rule of law: "The nobler the language, the more nefarious the purpose of any legal instrument."

My brother and I attended a gun show last weekend and I have good news. Bullets are back. Not only was I able to buy all the 9mm rounds I wanted, but my brother found adequate supplies of .380 ammunition as well. Stacks of .223 ammo were also in evidence. Since our government hasn't changed in six months, what has changed? Economics 101 tells us that the marginal utility of the next bullet will be less than the last one. In other words, if I have no bullets to shoot in my pistol, I really, really want the first 10...

Throughout the metro and in Council Bluffs, dozens dispose of unused fireworks and ammunition on Saturday. There were drop offs locations at Seymour Smith Park at 72nd and Harrison, Old Skate Land, Dave's Auto Body off Blair High Road and in Council Bluffs on 28th and Broadway. Fireworks and ammunition fill partially fill buckets, a mall sample of what was collected. "I dropped off some .22 ammunition and some shot gun ammo I don't use anymore." Excuse the vanity post but I just picked up a new Ruger P95 9mm. I figured it was the right time. I'm not a stranger to handguns, carrying the .45 back in the Corps and then transitioning from a wheel gun to the Sig 9 (226 I think...or 228 - one was bigger) when I was a cop...but I left that over a decade ago and I haven't had a handgun since. I am almost ashamed to say, I didn't leave with much memory either...they gave me rounds - I shot rounds - qualified well 4 times a year and...
