The story of Andrew Mellon (1855-1937) is lab in American conservatism. There are at least three reasons: (1) his business success, (2) his political acumen, and (3) his philanthropy. Business Success. He became one of the richest men in America through successful business ventures across numerous industries. His businesses gave jobs to tens of thousands of Americans while advancing the economy. Political Success. He served as Secretary of the Treasury from 1921 to 1932 under three presidents: Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. Working with President Coolidge, Mellon was instrumental in reviving the country from the depression of 1920-21. Unlike the later...

Former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, now a GOP candidate for governor, used his first television ad of the election cycle to take on immigration, the “gay lobby” and liberal judges. The 30-second ad, which began airing today on broadcast television statewide, mostly touts Thomas’ attempts at enforcing immigration during his tenure as Maricopa County Attorney. Alongside Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Thomas made a name for himself by taking a hard line against immigration along the Arizona-Mexico border.

St. Andrew was one of Jesus’ closest disciples, but many people know little about him. The feast of St. Andrew is November 30th. Here are 11 things to know and share . . . 1) Who was St. Andrew? He was the brother of St. Peter, who was also known as Simon bar-Jonah. He and Andrew shared the same father, so the latter would have been known as Andrew bar-Jonah. Andrew is regularly mentioned after Simon Peter, which suggests that he was Peter’s younger brother. Like his brother Peter, and their partners James and John, Andrew was initially a fisherman...

In his celebrated address to the Conservative Political Action Conference this past February, Andrew Breitbart predicted that the left and the media would do exactly what they are doing today: concoct false accusations of racism to divide Americans and intimidate opponents of President Barack Obama. Breitbart specifically singled out Al Sharpton and MSNBC, anticipating that they would cynically use empty "dog whistle" accusations to inflame racial tensions. He noted that it made no sense for Sharpton to have a prime time program "unless you understand what they're doing": This is gonna be the dog whistle election cycle. They tested it...

I'm glad Andrew Sullivan has responded to my Sarah Palin piece. You'd hate to write as much about her as I did and not have it register on the Dish. That would be like if you were a large white whale and Ahab just ignored you. Andrew's response covers a lot of terrain, and I agree with his point that Alaska is essentially a socialist state, or more accurately, a ward of the federal government (for more on that, see this excellent Charles Homans piece in the Washington Monthly). In fact, its perverse tax structure is one reason why Alaska...

This site has a Preliminary Report of the storm from beginning to end and some very telling photos like this one: The site is located here:

Sunday :: Sep 11, 2005 43 Outdoes 41, Again George W Bush wanted to avenge the disrepect his father received at the hands of the American people. And even more, he wanted to outdo his dad. Dubya was never going to wear the label "wimp" nor was he going to let someone like Saddam thumb his nose at the Bushes. Yet as with the runup to the war with Iraq, the disastrous reaction to the deadly hurricanes tie these two administrations together and people are noticing the eerie similarities. George HW Bush was not taken down by his role...

My girlfriend has asked me to do some research on the "legit" or "bogus" undertakings of Dr. Andrew Weil via his Weil Foundation. The basic story is that she was impressed all of his "after-tax" profits go to his foundation. I remarked that was a nice way to pay yourself a lump sum (gotta pay the SG&A) without looking like a greedy, capitalist pig. After browsing Google for a bit, I'm not finding any substantial detail, just the usual "rah rah rah" stuff. Anyone already know about this character and his foundation? Your information would be appreciated. Thanks.
