CIA goes hiring in heart of Arab America Fri Nov 27, 2009 10:43am EST By Soyoung Kim DEARBORN, Michigan (Reuters) - At Tuhama's Lebanese deli in Dearborn, and at bakeries and barbershops throughout town, it's no secret the CIA is looking for a few good spies. "There is a lot of talk, and nobody likes it," said Hamze Chehade, a 48-year-old Lebanese-American, taking a bite of his chicken shawarma. In dire need of agents fluent in Arabic, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency has made an unusual public show of its recruiting effort in Dearborn -- a city of 100,000 with...

Arabs.. racism.. it exists...word 'abd - Arabic for "slave" - often used in our household... so common ..its negative connotations.. to anyone darker skin than themselves - from southern Sudanese house servants to migrants from Darfur- clear intent to demean.. addressing a particularly dark-skinned or thick-lipped child.was a kind of racism that no one challenged, addressed,..through a child's eyes.. on a scale of colour, lighter was good, darker was bad. The word 'abd, although strictly meaning "slave" or "servant", became synonymous with negritude. my Islamic heritage reinforced this with quotes from Muhammad such as "You should listen to and obey...

Consumer advocate and 2000/2004 presidential candidate Ralph Nader has not ruled out another run in 2008, telling CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Thursday it’s too early for him to make a decision. The man who many blame as spoiling the election for Al Gore in 2000 also said a potential third party candidacy by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg would not affect his decision to run. Earlier this week, Bloomberg, a lifelong Democrat until he ran for mayor in 2001, dropped his affiliation with the GOP — a move that increased speculation he is considering an independent presidential bid. Nader also...

An online thesaurus struck a listing Monday for the word "Arab" after Arab-American groups complained the entry listed derogatory synonyms. The entry, which appeared on thesaurus.com, listed the word as a noun meaning "beggar," and gave 16 pejorative synonyms including "homeless person" and "welfare bum." The American Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee contacted the synonym book's online publisher Friday to complain about the entry; the American Arab Forum also criticized the listing on Monday. "I looked it up and I couldn't believe what I was seeing," said Aref Assaf, president of the American Arab Forum, which is based in Paterson.

NEW YORK (AFP) - An Arab-American organization and a group opposed to war and racism filed suit charging they were unconstitutionally denied a permit to hold a protest in Central Park during the upcoming Republican National Convention. Attorneys for the National Council of Arab Americans (NCA) and ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), filed suit in US District Court in Manhattan accusing Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the New York Police Department and others of violating their right to a permit for the park's Great Lawn. The groups want to hold a civil rights rally on Central Park's Great...

........Kerry has tried to limit Bush's inroads with Jewish voters by backing Israel over the Palestinian Authority, and this week said he would have still voted for the war in Iraq even if he knew at the time that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction or ties to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. And while Kerry supports amending the Patriot Act, the counterterrorism law that many Arab-Americans say has been used to infringe on their rights, he was among the majority of lawmakers who voted for it in October 2001. "It's a dilemma," said Taleb Salhab, coordinator of...

"What about the wall? What about the wall?" they screeched at the Democratic presidential candidate from Connecticut, Senator Joseph Lieberman. Yes, what about the wall, Senator Lieberman -- are you going to let those nasty Israelis interfere with a suicide bomber's inherent right to travel freely from Yasser Arafat's fuhrerbunker to the homes of his victims? Do you think that puny wall will stop Hamas and Islamic Jihad and al Aqsa? Have you ever heard of shovels and wire cutters and spades and bangalore torpedoes? Tell Mr. Sharon to tear down that wall, Senator Lieberman, before Allah Himself tears it...

Portrait of a WahhabiBy Stephen Schwartz FrontPageMagazine.com | June 30, 2003 On Thursday, June 26, I testified before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security, chaired by Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz).  My topic was “Wahhabism and Islam in the U.S.”  I outlined the outrageous degree to which Saudi-funded Wahhabi extremists, who are supporters of terrorism, have come to dominate Islam in the U.S. My testimony was not greeted with enthusiasm by James Zogby, the phony civil rights leader who heads the “Arab American Institute." Zogby, a Lebanese Christian once known for his moderate camouflage on Israel, but...

There are a number of lessons to be learned and observations to be made following the defeat of Congress Member Cynthia McKinney in a Democratic primary election last week. Her loss and that of Congressman Earl Hilliard earlier this summer provide a great deal for Arab Americans to think about. Most importantly, Arab Americans should not feel ashamed of their efforts in these two elections. The community did what they had to do – they performed well. We had been called upon to defend two members of Congress who had defended us in the past and we did. Despite the...
