  • Jackson Asks to Meet Academy President Over Grammy Cuts

    NY Times ^ | January 27, 2012 | JAMES C. MCKINLEY JR.
The Rev. Jesse L. Jackson has demanded a meeting with the head of the Recording Academy to talk about deep cuts to Grammy Award categories this year that some musicians have complained discriminate against certain ethnic groups. With the awards ceremony two weeks away, Mr. Jackson expressed his dismay over the cutbacks in a letter to Neil Portnow, the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and raised the possibility of protests. ----- On Thursday night Mr. Jackson told The Associated Press that he wanted “cooperation, not confrontation” with the recording academy, but he also said he...

This is astonishing beauty. One has to believe in God when seeing such splendor! Brit Phil Warren took 63 years to build this incredible fleet of 432 ships in exacting 1:300 scale- and check this out: every last one of them is built entirely from matchsticks and matchboxes. The amazing collection includes nearly 370 American and  60 British RN ships. Mr Warren started the first one in post-war 1948 when just a lad of 17, and the only tools utilized in their impeccable construction are razor blade, tweezers and sandpaper. Balsa wood glue keeps it all together.. and that's it.  More than 650,000 used matchsticks and boxes were used to create the fleet (must know every...

There are few images as enduring in American history as the one of General George Washington standing tall, next to the Stars and Stripes, in a rowboat gliding past mini-icebergs as he leads his troops across the Delaware River on Christmas Day 1776 to start a surprise attack on Hessian forces during the Battle of Trenton. In his 1851 portrait, “Washington Crossing the Delaware,” among the best-known of American paintings, the artist, Emanuel Leutze, did not shy away from imbuing the scene with a dose of glory, inspiration and heroism. He also did not let the facts get in the...

As I worked on this painting, I almost called it complete dozens of time but something told me I couldn't quit. I kept looking at His eyes until, finally, I knew I could stop. To me, it was how I envisioned how He may be looking at, not just our country, but the world. The sorrow and disappointment as He witnesses frenzied crowds scrambling for gifts who are unaware or forgetting that He was the truest of all gifts given to us by His Father. The sadness of He and His Father might feel as they witness that children are...

As we wave goodbye to the little bottle of sunshine known as the incandescent light bulb and prepare to submit to the government mandate to illuminate our lives with Compact Fluorescence, some reflection is in order. Aside from energy savings, the CFL is inferior in every way. They're slow to come on and give off a sickly glow, flooding your room with that Leningrad ambience. If you break one, forget about it, seal off the room and call in a Hazmat team. But what about the good ol' light bulb's status as an icon? The cartoon community is being robbed...

Yes. Taxpayers paid $600,000 for this toad and fairy girl statue. It sets in the lobby of the restricted DoD Mark Center building in Alexandria, VA and can only be viewed by about 2000 employees. That comes to $300 an employee for the pleasure of enjoying this art piece. As an added plus, it reportedly makes a gurgling sound. Oh, that noise may be coming from the taxpayers who paid for this pork toad.

DEC 9, 2011 BY JOHN ROSENTHAL The unveiling of pictures of planned luxury residential towers scheduled to be built in Seoul, South Korea, has sparked instant controversy. The reason is obvious. A whale nearly swallowed two people on a kayak and a woman on a surfboard. The humpback whale lunged from out of nowhere just several feet away, forcing thousands of anchovies to the surface, with sea gulls swarming around the scene in search of breakfast. Barbara Roettger filmed the epic near-miss event near Santa Cruz, California where recently a sailboat collided with another humpback whale and at least one kayaker capsized. Oh, and for the record, humpback whales typically are about 50 feet long and weigh 50 tons. That’s a whopping 2000 pounds for every foot of whale. Short be...

Here’s the thing about academic research: At its best, it reaffirms the obvious but at a much greater cost than casual observation entails. “A number of studies have found style of clothing and extent of nudity to be important markers of sexualization,” Erin Hatton and Mary Nell Trautner of the University of Buffalo wrote in a paper which appeared in Sexuality & Culture. A number of people outside the academy have noticed the same trend, merely by walking down the street. Nevertheless, the sociologists from Buffalo sought to break new ground. “A number of journalists and scholars have pointed to...

TOKYO (AP) -- Last Sunday was the six-month anniversary of the day the massive earthquake and tsunami devastated Japan's northeast coast. Some 20,000 people are dead or missing. More than 800,000 homes were completely or partially destroyed. The disaster crippled businesses, roads and infrastructure. The Japanese Red Cross Society estimates that 400,000 people were displaced. Half a year later, there are physical signs of progress. Much of the debris has been cleared away or at least organized into big piles. In the port city of Kesennuma, many of the boats carried inland by the tsunami have been removed. Most evacuees...

The Last Supper is one of the most famous of Leonardo’s pictures. Commissioned by da Vinci’s patron, Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, it was painted on a wall inside the convent of Santa Maria della Grazie in Milan in the 1490s. The Last Supper had always been a popular subject for devotional painting but Leonardo’s interpretation lifted the image to a higher plane in terms of art.

Right after receiving the victorious news from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg that Occupy Wall Street doesn't have to move out of Zuccotti Park after all, protest organizers learned they'd been blessed with a Shepard Fairey original. An East Coast art-blog editor who's been keeping up with the artistic aspects of OWS (and oh, there are many -- in L.A. too!) told WNYC radio of Fairey's "Occupation Party" invite: "I think it's really great that it's an upward looking positive image, as well as it tries to tie...
