A man suspected of bashing Asian women in the face with a hammer in a series of brutal, racially motivated attacks in New York city has been found dead in an apparent suicide, police said, just days after he detailed in an online blog a plot to attack the women and then kill himself. Tyrelle Shaw, 25, was found hanged in an elevator shaft in an apartment building Monday, police said on Tuesday. Shaw was wanted for four attacks on Asian women two weeks ago. In each instance, the attacker hit the victim in the face with a hard object....

At least 300 possible suspects have been identified by investigators probing the Rotherham child sex exploitation scandal. The National Crime Agency (NCA) said most of the potential suspects were Asian men, while the vast majority of victims were young British girls. The NCA launched a major investigation into the scandal after a damning report by Professor Alex Jay last year, revealed that as many as 1,400 children had been raped, trafficked and groomed by mainly Asian gangs in the South Yorkshire town between 1997 and 2013. Following the revelations South Yorkshire police, which was criticised for its handling of abuse...

Washington — An alliance of Asian American groups on Friday filed a federal complaint against HarvardUniversity, saying that school and other Ivy League institutions are using racial quotas to admit students other than high-scoring Asians. More than 60 Chinese, Indian, Korean and Pakistani groups came together for the complaint, which was filed with the civil rights offices at the Justice and Education departments. When actress Tippi Hedren visited a Vietnamese refugee camp in California 40 years ago, the Hollywood star's long, polished fingernails dazzled the women there. Hedren flew in her personal manicurist to teach a group of 20 refugees the art of manicures. Those 20 women - mainly the wives of high-ranking military officers and at least one woman who worked in military intelligence - went on to transform the industry, which is now worth about $8bn (Ł5.2bn) and is dominated by Vietnamese Americans. "We were trying to find vocations for them," says Hedren, who is perhaps best known for starring in...

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo ordered emergency measures on Sunday to combat the wage theft and health hazards faced by the thousands of people who work in New York State’s nail salon industry. Effective immediately, he said in a statement, a new, multiagency task force will conduct salon-by-salon investigations, institute new rules that salons must follow to protect manicurists from the potentially dangerous chemicals found in nail products, and begin a six-language education campaign to inform them of their rights. Nail salons that do not comply with orders to pay workers back wages, or are unlicensed, will be shut down. The...

A lawsuit filed against Harvard University in November by a group called Students for Fair Admissions alleges that the school’s admissions policy discriminates against Asian Americans. A key component of the argument is the higher average SAT scores of Asian American students who are admitted to elite U.S. colleges and universities. To make its case, the suit notes the findings of a study of seven top public and private colleges: “Asian Americans needed SAT scores that were about 140 points higher than white students. . . .
