Judge Leo Levnaic-Iwanski upheld the verdict of the lower court, which convicted Elisabeth [Sabaditsch-Wolff] on the charge of “denigration of religious beliefs of a legally recognized religion.” The judge found that the length of time her trial had taken was excessive, and that her fine should be reduced. A new date will be set in the lower court for the announcement of the fine. There will be a press conference shortly at the Wiener Akademikerbund.

Europe's Left has suffered a calamitous six months. Socialist governments have met historic defeats in Portugal and Spain. Greece’s Pasok party was toppled by an EU technocrat Putsch. Ireland’s soft-Left Fianna Foil lost every seat in Dublin. Almost 97pc of the European Union’s population is now governed by conservative or Right-leaning coalitions, or EU-imposed mandarins. All that is left to social democrats is Austria (8.4m), Denmark (5.5m), and Slovenia (2.1m). The whole machinery of the European Union (EU) system is under the control of the Right, with variants of Rhenish corporatism in the Council, and pre-modern Hayekians at the European...

Most Brits think it's an activity best learned behind closed doors. But an enterprising Swedish schoolmistress thinks otherwise. Ylva-Maria Thompson has opened the world's first international sex school to teach its students how to be better lovers. The Austrian International Sex School in Vienna offers 'hands on' lessons in seduction for £1,400 a term. The 'headmistress' says anyone over the age of 16 can enrol at 'the world's first college of applied sexuality'. Students live in a mixed sex dormitory block where they're expected to practise their homework. And at the end of the course, they are awarded a qualification....

One highly placed man of the cloth has even warned about the risk of a coming schism as significant numbers of priests are refusing obedience to the Pope and bishops for the first time in memory. The 300-plus supporters of the so-called Priests' Initiative have had enough of what they call the church's "delaying" tactics, and they are advocating pushing ahead with policies that openly defy current practices. These include letting nonordained people lead religious services and deliver sermons; making communion available to divorced people who have...

An Austrian has been fined for yodelling while mowing his lawn, according to a report. The Kronen Zeitung newspaper claims Helmut G. was told by a court in Graz, Styria, that his yodelling offended his next-door Muslim neighbours. The men reportedly accused the 63-year-old of having tried to mock and imitate the call of the Muezzin. The daily paper writes the Austrian was fined 800 Euros after judges ruled he could have tried to offend them and ridicule their belief. The Muslims, whose nationalities were not revealed by the report, were right in the middle of a prayer when the...

Is the Linz Auxiliary Bishop on the Way? Editor: considering the Vienna Cardinal's earlier attack against Pope Benedict's choice for auxiliary Bishop of the scandal Diocese of Linz, it might not be hard to see how Pope Benedict regards this situation, considering the embarrassment the Linz Bishop faces, lying to the press about the fact that Rome refuses to acknowledge any of his choices. http://eponymousflower.blogspot.com/2010/11/is-linz-auxiliary-bishop-on-way.html

Europe’s hastily assembled bailout fund already seems to be coming apart at the seams, and that’s before Ireland has even tapped into it. Austria is refusing to contribute to the next tranche of bailout money for Greece, citing the country’s failure to meet conditions. Yesterday it emerged there is serious slippage in Greece’s deficit reduction programme. The way things are going, the facility will fail even before its wider fault lines have been fully exposed. Europe is making things up as it goes along, and a pretty desperate job it is making of it too. The extraordinary thing to outsiders...

"They tend to lead unnecessarily to undesired pregnancies and therefore to terminated pregnancies," said Fiala. Actually his Firm Gynmed has...

Nazi hunter Efraim Zuroff is fighting libel charges filed by an alleged war criminal in Hungary. The case, being heard in a Budapest courtroom, began Oct. 8 and is scheduled to continue through a final hearing Dec. 16.It is likely the first time that a man under investigation for mass murder has sued his accusers, Zuroff told JTA. VIENNA (Reuters) - Austria's resurgent far-right party won over a quarter of the vote in Vienna's provincial election Sunday as voters took their discontent about immigration and security to the ballot box. The elections in "Red Vienna," a traditional stronghold of the centre-left Social Democrats, reflect a wider European trend as voters concerned about the economic crisis and integration of Muslims turn to rightist parties. Vienna's Social Democrats under Michael Haeupl, mayor since 1994, won 44.1 percent, losing their absolute majority. Heinz-Christian Strache's far-right Freedom Party scooped up 27.1 percent, up from 15 percent in 2005. All the other main...

The stealing of the host is supposedly comparable with the willful destruction of a Tora-roll or the desecration of a graveyard. [kreuz.net Graz] Unknown persons have damaged more churches in the Austrian Diocese of Graz-Seckau. This was according to the Press Office of the Diocese today. The media has regarded this crime with indifference. The press text in the main speaks of "more disturbances and defacement of Catholic churches."
