I believe that abortion care is a positive social good -- and I think it’s time people said so.Recently, the Daily Kos published an article titled I Am Pro-Choice, Not Pro-Abortion. “Has anyone ever truly been pro-abortion?” one commenter asked. Uh. Yes. Me. That would be me. I am pro-abortion like I’m pro-knee-replacement and pro-chemotherapy and pro-cataract surgery. As the last protection against ill-conceived childbearing when all else fails, abortion is part of a set of tools that help women and men to form the families of their choosing. I believe that abortion care is a positive social good. I...

Three people were arrested Tuesday after the Lawrence County Drug Task Force served a search warrant at a home in the 2600 block of Tunnelton Road. According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, officers from both the Bedford Police Department and Lawrence County Sheriff's Department SWAT Team executed the warrant. "Working on information received about illegal drug activity at the home officer secured a search warrant," Parsley says. "When officers arrived there were three people in the home and all three were arrested after officers found various amounts of meth, heroin, firearms, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a large amount of...

In 1965, the aircraft carrier USS Midway was bombing Vietnam. VA-25, an attack aviation unit of the Navy, operated from the Midway. In October, one of the toilets on the ship cracked. The crew planned to dispose of it. Commander Bill Stoddard, the executive officer of VA-25, came up with a novel way to get rid of the toilet. To celebrate the six millionth pound of ordnance dropped by his unit, Cdr. Stoddard had the toilet painted with the "Fist of the Fleet" emblem of his unit. It was then loaded onto his Skyraider. Cdr. TUBA CITY, Ariz. (RNS) As I pass through the Navajo Nation on my 4,000-mile drive across America, I catch a disturbing glimpse of a white-power insurgency happening in all regions. White settlement of the Southwest meant dislodging the native population at gunpoint. U.S. Army troops slaughtered the Navajo at will. Whites broke one treaty after another, then forced the Navajo in 1864 onto a “Long Walk” of 300 miles away from their tribal lands. When a pregnant Navajo woman came to childbirth, an impatient Army soldier simply shot her. The Navajo were allowed to return four years later to a...

Uncivil Behavior? Judah P. Benjamin served as the Confederate Secretary of War. The 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the United States — Congress passed the Thirteenth Amendment in late January 1865 — comes at an fraught moment in the history of race relations. Considering that black men are being killed by police at the same rate as they were lynched in the era of Jim Crow, it can be depressing to reflect on how many promises of 1865, not to mention 1776, have not yet been fulfilled. ime running short, Republicans and Democrats agreed Tuesday on a $1.1 trillion spending bill to avoid a government shutdown and delay a politically-charged struggle over President Barack Obama's new immigration policy until the new year. The compromise will permit virtually the entire government to operate normally through the Sept. 30 end of the fiscal year, with the exception of the Department of Homeland Security. Funds for that one agency will run out again in late winter. That will give Republicans an opportunity to try to use the expiration as leverage to force Obama to roll back a decision that will...

A RECENT United Nations report says that nearly half a million Ukrainians have fled the country since April. The fact that families run from a war zone is heartbreaking but hardly unexpected. The disturbing part lies in the details — of the roughly 454,000 people who had fled Ukraine by the end of October, more than 387,000 went to Russia. Most of those who fled were Russian speakers from the east, but this still raises a sobering question: If this is a conflict between Ukraine and Russia, why did so many Ukrainians choose to cast their lot with the enemy?...

Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged his government to come up with countermeasures to Western sanctions imposed against Russia over the Ukrainian conflict. I am new here and I hope my comments are not taken out of context or I'm thought to be a horrible person if my words lean in a racist direction. I in no way pretend to be some political science student or preacher, but sometimes an old man just has to vent! I am a Viet Nam Vet Discharged in 1975 and then as now, it seems that the USA can never really have a clear perception of "who our friends are and who are the Devils on the world stage". And ever since that experience I have been...

The Ocala Star-Banner reports that the man is serving 10-year sentence after pleading no contest to second-degree felony sexual battery. In a hand-written motion, the 35-year-old inmate asked a circuit court judge to modify his sentence to include castration. The motion did not explain why the inmate wanted to be castrated. The court denied the motion saying it did not have jurisdiction in the case.

The Baltic Sea is not known for its flesh-stripping tropical fish, but this season, a close relative of the piranha reputed to have a fondness for nibbling on men's testicles has appeared in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad on the Baltic. A local fisher nabbed several South American pacu in a city pond and handed them over to marine biologists for identification, Interfax reported Friday. The pacu is a cousin of the omnivorous piranha. Unlike its fearsome relative, it mostly subsists on a pacific diet of nuts and algae, but last summer media dubbed the pacu the "ball cutter" when...
