WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Authorities are investigating whether a Border Patrol agent shot dead in Arizona near the Mexican border may have been killed by friendly fire, two U.S. government sources said on Friday. The sources, government officials familiar with the matter, declined to elaborate. A Department of Homeland Security spokesman declined to comment.

Investigators are looking into whether friendly fire caused the death of Border Patrol agent Nick Ivie or the wounding of his colleague early Tuesday morning. Acting Cochise County Sheriff Rod Rothrock said it remains possible that either one was shot by another agent, though the investigation is still in its early stages. "Gunfight situations are highly fluid and dramatic, and this was out there in the middle of the night," Rothrock said. "People are moving and running, and I can't say it didn't happen." If it was friendly fire, that conclusion will be reached later in the investigation, he said....

The National Rifle Association (NRA) endorsed Mitt Romney for president late Thursday. NRA Executive vice president Wayne LaPierre and NRA Political Victory Fund chairman Chris Cox will formally announce the endorsement at a Romney rally in Virginia later Thursday evening. Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan will also be on hand. “In this election, there is no debate,” LaPierre said in a statement. “There is only one choice – only one hope – to save our firearms freedom and our way of life.” The endorsement is not surprising — the NRA has a history of supporting conservative candidates, who traditionally support...

Earlier this week, the Wiki Weapons Project--an initiative to create a 3-D printed handgun and distribute the digital design file for free online--ran into a stumbling block when 3-D printer provider Stratasys pulled the lease on a printer it had provided the group. Stratasys cited a clause in the lease agreement that allows the company to rescind a lease for printers believed to be used for unlawful purposes. That raises the obvious (and thorny) question: Is the Wiki Weapons Project doing anything illegal? We at PopSci are experts on many things, but federal firearms regulations and intellectual property law are...

After soundly trouncing Barack Obama in Wednesday night’s debate, Mitt Romney added even more momentum to his campaign Thursday when the National Rifle Association's Political Victory Fund officially endorsed him. NRA's decision could be heavily weighted by Paul Ryan's presence on the ticket. Ryan is a devoted hunter and gun owner, and he's been outspoken about it, while Romney has not publicly shared that passion. While the NRA-PVF endorsement is good, but hardly surprising news, another situation brewing in California that could energize western sportsmen to vote next month has finally erupted. That state will change the name of its...

So why do gangsters aim their guns sideways? Marine marksman sheds light on how gunmen from the 'hood unwittingly use a well-known aiming technique It's an iconic image immortalised in dozens of Hollywood gangster films: the gangster aiming down the side of his pistol before pumping a volley of bullets into his victim. But with most people knowing that the aiming sights are found on the top of a gun barrel, it's also a counter-intuitive way to accurately fire a weapon. So why is it that gangsters are always shown using their guns in this way? According to Jon Davis,...

Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan sent out a fundraising plea to supporters Tuesday saying that donating to the Romney campaign will help ensure that Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., whose Justice Department oversaw the botched "Fast and Furious" gunwalking operation, will be kicked out of office. The email plea comes a day after Univision reported that guns from the U.S. government operation ended up in the hands of major drug cartel leaders and were used to kill 16 people at a birthday party in Juarez, Mexico.
  • No Coverage at the Wires as Univision Exposes Wider Scope, Sickening Carnage of 'Fast

As of 2 PM ET, various searches at the national web site of the Associated Press, aka the Administration's Press (on "furious"; on "Univision"), Reuters ("furious"; "fast and furious"; "univision"), and United Press International ("furious"; "Univision") indicate that the three wire services have given no coverage to reports from Univision exposing the wider geographic scope and far more fatal fallout of the deliberately untrackable guns-to-cartels operation known as Fast and Furious. I wonder how the leading U.S. Spanish network's broadcasters and audience feel about getting the same treatment the establishment press gives center-right blogs?

Authorities are investigating an incident where an American citizen was grazed by a bullet while fleeing from gunmen in the outskirts of Reynosa. Pharr police reported that it happened on the Mexican border city's eastside early Sunday morning. Investigators told Action 4 News that a wounded 38-year-old man drove up from Mexico at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge around 8:20 a.m. Sunday. The Pharr man told customs officers that a bullet grazed his head while fleeing from gunmen in his red Ford Ranger pickup truck. It's not clear why the man was in Mexico or what he was doing but he...

Today I went shopping at BJs and then visited a newly opened Dick's Sporting Goods store in the same mall. Big store, but the shooting cubicle is hidden in the back of the store between fishing stuff and camping equipment. Had to search. They had a fair stock of long guns -- no evil handguns, of course. I asked to see the prices on .22 LR and was pleased to find that they carry the Remington .22 LR copper-covered rounds in the 525 round box for $10.98. The rest of the .22 ammo was expensive, however: 100 rounds for $21.95....
  • Lawmaker's gun room explosion likely 'spontaneous combustion' (ID)

BURLEY, Idaho -- Fire officials believe it was spontaneous combustion that made a gun room explode at the home of an Idaho state lawmaker last weekend. The blast sent Representative Fred Wood's wife to a burn center in Salt Lake City on Saturday night. Burley Fire Chief Keith Martin believes a gun room below Fred and Amy Wood's house exploded after rags with gun cleaning chemicals on them sat in a garbage bin and slowly produced enough heat to ignite on fire. “He cleaned his guns, and we are thinking maybe the cleaning solvent and the rags that he used...

How high up did the weapons of Operation Fast and Furious go in the cartels? This high: When Mexican authorities took Juarez drug cartel carnage king Jose Antonio Acosta Hernandez — better known as “El Diego” — into custody, he had weapons from Operation Fast and Furious on his person, the English-language transcript of the Spanish-language television network Univision’s special investigation into the scandal shows.“According to investigations, ‘El Diego’ forms the link between this massacre and Fast and Furious,” an anchor read on air in Spanish Sunday evening, referring to two different mass killings drug cartel operatives used Fast and...

Scandal: A Univision special documents how weapons provided by the administration to Mexican drug cartels repeatedly have taken a deadly toll as families on both sides of the border wait for true answers and accountability. We may never know how many deaths, kidnappings and other criminal activities were facilitated by more than 2,000 weapons that were allowed to "walk" into Mexico under the Obama administration's Fast and Furious program, but a Univision special aired Sunday exposes more of the carnage. The special, put together by Univision's investigative unit and aired as a special edition of Univision's "Aqui y Ahora" ("Here...

BOSTON – Arguments in the case of a retired Air Force captain from Springfield charged with a gun violation were heard by the state’s highest court Monday. A lawyer for John McGowan of 15 Garland St., argued that his client took all required precautions to store his gun on Oct. 19, 2008 when city police visited his home and charged him with improper storage of a firearm. Judges in the state’s Supreme Judicial Court are expected to render a decision in the coming months. According to court papers, McGowan’s girlfriend took his gun from the nightstand next to his bed...
