One of the U.S. Air Force's Boeing B-52 bombers has been damaged after its wing clipped a fence while it was being moved around on an airbase in Louisiana. The bomber, also known as the Stratofortress, was being positioned in order to be put on display when the driver of a tow misjudged the distance between the plane's right wing and a metal perimeter fence. The fence appeared to have penetrated through the skin of the aircraft and punctured the right wing leaving a significant amount of structural damage and its starboard fuel tank ... [photos at link]

BOSSIER CITY — Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana has been selected to house the Air Force's new Global Strike Command, a decision that will create some 900 jobs in a state still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. The Air Force notified lawmakers of the decision Thursday and were expected to make a public announcement in the afternoon. "It's extremely important," said Rep. John Fleming, R-La. "This will mean temporary jobs to begin with, contract and construction, and then as many as 1,000 long-term jobs in personnel." Air Force leaders created the new Strike Command to better manage the nation's nuclear...

A Minot airman has supplied Project Camelot with detailed answers to these and other questions. The information is of such importance that we have felt obliged to present it as a stand-alone follow-up report. The name we have given our source, Jack Carter, is a pseudonym. We have not yet met him, but have conducted extensive correspondence by e-mail. We are confident that he is exactly who he says he is: an experienced airman with extensive personal experience of nuclear weapons security procedures at Minot AFB. We believe that nothing we are reporting here is classified or constitutes any breach...

WASHINGTON -- -- Just after 9 a.m. on Aug. 29, a group of U.S. airmen entered a sod-covered bunker on North Dakota's Minot Air Force Base with orders to collect a set of unarmed cruise missiles bound for a weapons graveyard. They quickly pulled out a dozen cylinders, all of which appeared identical from a cursory glance, and hauled them along Bomber Boulevard to a waiting B-52 bomber. The airmen attached the gray missiles to the plane's wings, six on each side. After eyeballing the missiles on the right side, a flight officer signed a manifest that listed a dozen...

The US Air Force established a provisional Cyber Command Tuesday as part of an expanding mission to prepare for wars in cyberspace, officials said. The move comes amid concerns over the vulnerability of the US communications and computer networks to cyber attack in a conflict, as well as the military's desire to exploit the new medium. Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne announced the creation of the new command at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, where the air force's existing cyber warfare operations are centered. Officials said the provisional command will pave the way within a year for the creation...

"The aim is to develop a major command that stands alongside Air Force Space Command and Air Combat Command as the provider of forces that the president, combatant commanders and the American people can rely on for preserving the freedom of access and commerce, in air, space and now cyberspace," Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne told an industry conference. 12/7/2005 - BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. (AFPN) -- Some people have compared the specialists at the 2nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron to gears in a watch. The watch can’t tick without the gears -- just as aircraft can’t fly without the Airmen. Within the squadron, specialists in each of the three aircraft maintenance units work behind the scenes to make sure all the B-52 Stratofortress’ aircraft systems work. The Airmen learn one or more aircraft systems to make sure each is ready for every sortie. “Each specialty is out there supporting the launch to ensure there are no mission breakers...
