I went outside tonight around 08:15 PM PDT And looked to the North/Northeast and noticed a bright orange object coming in from that direction to the SW and curving slightly towards South. It was moving pretty fast and didn't have a tail and I didn't think much of it as I see a lot of aircraft in this area heading towards the local airstrip in Carlsbad or further south towards San Diego. It did not have a tail/trail, and was not on a path typical of shooting star nor orbital debris. After about 30 seconds of my noticing it the...

The Scottish Parliament is considering a controversial bill that would assign a social worker to every child born in the country in order to “promote, support or safeguard the well-being of the child or young person.” The Children and Young People Bill, though well-intentioned, has many critics who believe it infringes too much on the personal nature of child-rearing. According to the bill, every child would be assigned a “named person” other than the parents, but unlike in the case of naming a godparent, the parents do not have a choice of opting not to have one.

The European Union is to ban olive oil jugs and dipping bowls from restaurant tables in a move described by one of Britain’s top cooks as authoritarian and damaging to artisan food makers. The small glass jugs filled with green- or gold-colored extra virgin olive oil are familiar and traditional for restaurant goers across Europe, but they will be banned from 1 January 2014 after a decision taken in an obscure Brussels committee earlier this week. From next year, olive oil “presented at a restaurant table” must be in prepackaged factory bottles with a tamper-proof dispensing nozzle and labeling in...

Back in 2004, I published The Real Matrix, in seven parts (read them here). I had little idea how the process outlined there would accelerate in 2005 and 2006. Indeed, even those still "plugged in" ought to be wondering why the U.S. Senate just gave thumbs-up (62 yeas vs. 26 nays) to an immigration bill that most of the public does not want, and that would clearly be destructive of this country's long-term best interests – educationally, culturally, and economically. The year 2010 will mark the 50th anniversary of humanity's strangest scientific quest: the use of giant radiotelescope dishes to listen for radio messages from alien beings in space. So far, the search has been a complete bust. The radioastronomers keep listening, but the stars aren't talking to us -- not yet, anyway. Oddly, the failure of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, has been largely ignored by the general public, journalists and Hollywood filmmakers. They continue to be enchanted by (and, in Hollywood's case, to commercially exploit) the hope that intelligent life is sprinkled across the galaxy like...

Official: Traficant could take oath of office in prison -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The government will file liens next week to begin collecting nearly $250,000. By PATRICIA MEADE VINDICATOR CRIME REPORTER YOUNGSTOWN — If elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, James A. Traficant Jr. could take the oath of office in prison. The House can authorize that the oath, normally given by the speaker, be given "remotely," said a House parliamentarian. A judge, for example, could administer the oath at the Federal Correctional Institution at Allenwood in White Deer, Pa., where Traficant is incarcerated for the next eight years. He was expelled...

Who would have guessed that Jim Traficant would ever get his wish? Well, sonovagun! The House finally beamed him up to a place where only one man since the Civil War has gone before; out of Congress, and into the federal pokey for 8 years. The good news? Gary Condit voted not to boot Traficant. Write your own punchlines.Technically, Traficant was convicted of tax evasion for what amounts to getting a few free chores around the house. The public cost of these dastardly crimes is somewhere between a few warm six packs of beer and a nice lobbyist dinner. Yet...

Rep. Jim Traficant, the Youngstown Democrat whose rampant buffoonery in the guise of populism has embarrassed Congress for nearly 20 years, is about to see that career end in the ultimate personal humiliation: expulsion from the House he has so reviled, from the office he has so debased. Traficant is a felon. He took bribes for legislative favors. He demanded kickbacks from his employees' salaries. A federal jury reached that verdict in April after a trial in which the congressman, overweening in his arrogance, disdained professional defense counsel. He chose instead to bluster and rant about "government conspiracies" throughout nine...

"With his customary bluster and defiance, convicted congressman James Traficant returned to center stage Monday, drawing the same laughter and gasps his invectives have produced on the House floor over the past 17 years," the Associated Press reported today. Returning to Capitol Hill for the first time in five months, the wacky Ohio Democrat spewed obscenities and insults as colleagues awaited his response to allegations that could lead to his expulsion from the House. "Are all those volumes your evidence?" he asked the committee counsel, gesturing to large three-ring binders, boxes and charts. "Well, you know what you can do...

C A N B E R R A, June 17 — In a world breakthrough out of the realms of Star Trek, scientists in Australia have successfully teleported a laser beam of light from one spot to another in a split second but warn: don't sell the car yet. A team of physicists at the Australian National University (ANU) announced today they had successfully disembodied a laser beam in one location and rebuilt it in a different spot about one meter away in the blink of an eye. Project leader Dr Ping Koy Lam said there was a close resemblance...

U.S. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. on Friday rested his case without taking the stand to defend himself against corruption charges. U.S. District Judge Lesley Wells denied his motion to dismiss the charges on the grounds that she violated his constitutional rights several times during the nine-week trial. "You have failed to allow me to defend myself," said Traficant, who is representing himself even though he is not a lawyer. Traficant, 60, is accused of taking kickbacks from staff members, accepting gifts and free labor from businessmen for his political help and filing false tax returns. He faces up to...
