The Big 12 and Southeastern Conference are hedging their BCS bets while borrowing an idea from the Rose Bowl. The two conferences announced Friday their football champions will meet in an undetermined bowl game if they are not chosen for the BCS' anticipated four-team playoff format. It is unclear if it will be a reoccurring site.

Missouri football Coach Gary Pinkel was arrested by Boone County Sheriff's Department officers Wednesday night on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Pinkel was pulled over at 10:15 p.m. on Keene Street just north of Broadway, according to the incident report. He was stopped for lane and signal violations, Chief Deputy Major Tom Reddin said. He was cooperative with officers and taken into custody at the Boone County Jail. He posted $500 bond for the first-offense DWI arrest.

The president of the University of Oklahoma says his school and Texas A&M both received invitations to join the Southeastern Conference during the last round of conference realignment. Oklahoma ended up remaining in the Big 12. University president David Boren said Wednesday that the Sooners had offers from both the SEC and the Pac-10.

For Immediate Release Thursday, June 17, 2010 On Thursday, Texas State Representatives Bill Callegari (District 132, Katy) and Garnet Coleman (District 147, Houston) joined other Houston-area legislators calling for the inclusion of the University of Houston in the Big 12 conference. In a letter addressed to the president of each university in the conference and the Big 12 commissioner, the legislators noted that, "Despite UH's local and statewide prominence, the university does not belong to a strong BCS conference such as the Big 12. The Cougars, the City of Houston, and the State of Texas deserve better." Last week, the...

Thought to be on life support so very recently, the Big 12, in the eyes of Jerry Jones, should expand. [Jones], owner of the Dallas Cowboys, former University of Arkansas football player and big-time power broker in the world of professional and now college athletics, is the driving force behind a potential move that would make the Big 12 the most compelling conference in the history of college football. Jones, according to a source familiar with his thinking, wants his alma mater to play in a league with former Southwest

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Arkansas athletic director Jeff Long says the school has "no interest" in joining another conference amid speculation the Razorbacks could be a candidate to move to the Big 12. Long said Wednesday that Arkansas is happy in the Southeastern Conference. The Big 12 recently lost Nebraska to the Big Ten and Colorado to the Pac-10, leaving it with 10 members. Arkansas left the Southwest Conference and joined the SEC in 1991. Some of its old rivals from the Southwest Conference -- such as Texas and Texas A&M -- now play in the Big 12.

LAWRENCE, Kan—Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins said Wednesday that the five Big 12 schools in danger of being left without a conference came up with a plan that included offering money to keep Texas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma in the league. Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Baylor and Missouri drafted a “business plan” to persuade the bigger schools to reject any interest from the Pac-10 or Southeastern Conference, Perkins said. The idea was to make sure the three Big 12 South schools would not lose any money by sticking with the Big 12. “Five schools got together and we tried...

Nice poker face, Lady Gaga. Way to go all in there, Bevo. Oh, we were braced for Expansiogeddon. Texas was going here. Texas was going there. Everyone wanted Texas. Texas to the Pac-10 was a done deal. Texas was going to topple all the dominoes because Texas held all the cards. Well, then Texas got its bluff called. And guess what? When it came down to the moment of truth, Texas pushed away from the table, stayed right where it was. Texas fold ’em. Don’t get me wrong. Thank goodness. The Big 12 (now 10) somehow hanging on saved college...

Analysis: Big 12 follows UT's lead Other schools remain in fold, some grudgingly, as big dog barks By MIKE FINGER Austin Bureau June 14, 2010, 11:33PM . Mack Brown's football program was driving the entire realignment discussion. So it turns out Texas A&M won't get the satisfaction of secession. Baylor, having received the miracle its athletic director asked for, won't have to contemplate the ramifications of an alliance with UTSA. And Bob Stoops won't have to share a division with his brother. But even after all the flirtations, hidden agendas and indecision, and even after every politician, fundraiser and network...

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott’s background comes from running the Women’s Tennis Association, not working as a college administrator. College athletics is generally run by lifers, folks who came up through the system and learned the same way to think and manage the same way.

The Big 12 Conference will stay alive after all 10 remaining teams have agreed to remain members, according to multiple reports late this afternoon. Texas turned down an invitation from the Pacific-10 Conference, announcing in a university statement late this afternoon that the Longhorns will continue competing in the Big 12. Texas president William Powers Jr. and athletic director DeLoss Dodds will hold a news conference at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Texas Board of Regents meeting set for Tuesday was cancelled. The departure of Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State to the Pac-10 is imminent, four sources within the Big 12 said Monday. One source said commissioner Dan Beebe's last-minute plan to save the conference has "zero" chance to succeed. Another source said it is "very unlikely" to succeed.

In the early 1970s, President Richard Nixon was dealing with a world consisting of three rival superpowers: the US, the Soviet Union and China. He and his adviser Henry Kissinger had a plan for how to get the best deals for the US — play the other two powers against one another. “There’s me, there’s you and there’s the other guy.” The practice is now known as triangular diplomacy and it seems that SEC commissioner Mike Slive might know a little something about it. Here’s why: * The SEC has amazingly pushed, pleaded, baited and cajoled Texas A&M into —...

College conference realignment isn't taking the weekend off. Two media sources -- Jackson, Miss., television station WJTV and A&M blogger/radio host Billy Liucci -- report that Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive is meeting with Texas A&M officials today in College Station, Texas. Meanwhile, The Oklahoman newspaper reports Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott met today with officials from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in Oklahoma City, presumably to invite them to join his conference. Scott also plans to meet with Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, according to the newspaper. Sporting News' Matt Hayes reported Thursday that the SEC will likely only expand...

The Big 12 Conference’s possible erosion has begun. The Pac-10 Conference announced Thursday that the University of Colorado has accepted an invitation to join the league, the first change in the conference in 32 years and the first in what could be sea change in college athletics. “The University of Colorado is a perfect match — academically and athletically — with the Pac-10,” said Colorado President Bruce Benson. Larry Scott, the Pac-10 commissioner who has been in office 11 months, called it a “historic moment” for the conference. “The Pac-10 is poised for tremendous growth,” he said. “The University of...

The Big 12 appears to be dead. A source close to the Nebraska Board of Regents told Orangebloods.com the regents informally agreed Wednesday to move to the Big Ten and that a formal announcement Nebraska is leaving will come Friday. Sources close to Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech have suggested to Orangebloods.com over the last week that if Nebraska leaves, the Big 12 can't be saved. Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds and president Williams Powers gathered UT coaches today at 2 p.m. CT to tell them they did everything they could to save the Big 12 but that they...

Kansas chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little has reached out to her counterpart at Nebraska, urging him to keep the Cornhuskers in the Big 12 Conference. In an interview with The Associated Press, Gray-Little also said she planned to call Missouri chancellor Brady J. Deaton with the same message. Nebraska and Missouri have both said they are interested in moving to the Big Ten, which could lead to the death of the Big 12 and leave Kansas and Kansas State without a BCS conference.

The tagline of Kenneth Starr's guest column in Monday's editions of the Waco Herald-Tribune said it all. Ken Starr assumed the presidency of Baylor University last Tuesday. Starr must assume we were born last Tuesday. Otherwise, he wouldn't have called a press conference Monday to declare Baylor's undying love for the Big 12 when, in reality, he wanted to get his school's name into the media sphere to ensure Baylor isn't left in the conference if the rest of the south division members defect to the Pac-10. Starr is new at his job, so we shouldn't grill him too hard...

PAC-10 Ok's Expansion SAN FRANCISCO -- Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott emerged from the final day of conference meetings Sunday and announced that university presidents and chancellors have given him all the authority he needs to expand the Pac-10. "What direction that process takes still could go in different directions, everything from remaining as we are as a Pac-10 that's got some very bright days ahead of it to a bigger conference footprint," Scott said. "I have the authority to take it in different directions, depending on various scenarios and discussions we're going to have." Scott wouldn't give any timeframe for...

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Big Ten presidents and chancellors took no formal action on expansion Sunday at their annual spring meeting, but they acknowledged that their timetable to explore the topic could be impacted by what happens elsewhere. The Big Ten outlined a 12- to 18-month period to explore expansion in a Dec. 15 statement, and the league has since reiterated that the timetable hasn't changed. But recent events, such as the reports Saturday that the Big 12 has issued a stay-or-go ultimatum to Nebraska and Missouri, might accelerate what the Big Ten does. "Our announcement in December has caused...

The Big 12 has drawn a line in the sand for at least two member schools. The conference, amid a chorus of story lines that would all significantly change the face of big-league college sports, has imposed a deadline of Friday for Nebraska and Missouri to state their intentions on whether they intend to bolt for the Big Ten, with the possibility of an extension for a decision by next Tuesday, The Austin American-Statesman has reported, citing two sources. The Big 12's university presidents decided on imposing the ultimatum, two highly placed officials within two of the conference schools said,...

With realignment seemingly on the way to major college football, there seems to be a new and intriguing alignment thrown out daily. The latest came Thursday in the form of a report from Orangebloods.com (a Rivals.com member), which said the Pac-10 is prepared to offer membership to six Big 12 schools to form a mega 16-team conference that would cover the western half of the country and break into seven of the nation's top 20 television markets. According to the report, the Pac-10 is all but ready to extend invitations to Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and...

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- From geographic proximity to its membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities, Missouri in many ways is a natural fit for an expanded Big Ten. Need another reason? Try 13 million -- that's about how many extra dollars Missouri could expect to earn annually from a conference with its own television network and a revenue-sharing model that distributes equal payments to all 11 members. The Big Ten insists that no decisions have been made on expansion -- and no offers extended, contrary to a Kansas City radio station's report earlier this week. But Missouri isn't waiting...

An Open Letter: UT's Miller lets his 'Wolf' pride show Posted on: Saturday, November 15, 2008, 8:05 AM EDITOR'S NOTE: Roy Miller, a Shoemaker High graduate and senior defensive tackle for the University of Texas football team, offers a letter of support – both for his alma mater in the first football playoff appearance in program history, and for his home town. I am proud beyond belief in my Grey Wolves. Sitting in the locker room at the University of Texas amongst teammates who have been a part of high school teams that were considered national champs in high school,...

While it’s a reflex to automatically assume the SEC is the nation’s best conference year in and year out, there’s a contender to the throne this season. It took 12 years to get to this point, and now this should be the season when it all comes together for the Big 12. It’s one thing for the usual stars like Oklahoma and Texas to be good, which they will be, but a conference really blows up when the normal also-rans become contenders. After a fantastic bowl season (outside of OU’s gaffe to West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl), the league...

OKLAHOMA CITY — To some Oklahoma football fans, there are things that just aren't done in the heart of Sooner Nation, and one of them is to walk into a bar wearing a Texas Longhorns T-shirt. That's exactly what touched off a bloody skirmish that left a Texas-shirt-wearing fan nearly castrated and an Oklahoma fan facing aggravated assault charges that could put him in prison for up to five years.

The SEC East is the best division in all of college football. Vanderbilt and Kentucky are each bowl worthy to go along with Florida, Tennessee, Georgia and South Carolina. The Big 12 South isn’t far behind. --snip-- As always, Texas and Oklahoma are the big dogs, but while their each going into the year as their usual national title contenders, they’re not quite jaw-dropping killers; each has various flaws. Texas Tech might be missing receiver experience, but the defense will be better and QB Graham Harrell has the time in the system to bomb away. Texas A&M gets almost all...

Bill Snyder, the man who turned Kansas State football from a national laughingstock into one of the nation's top programs, is expected to announce his retirement at this afternoon's press conference in Manhattan. According to a Powercat Illustrated story on the website rivals.com, Snyder told his players the news around 9 p.m., which came as a "complete surprise to everyone in the room." The 66-year-old Snyder is expected to step down following Saturday's season finale at KSU Stadium against the Missouri Tigers. It will mark the end of possibly the greatest turnaround in the history of college football. Snyder, who...

East Lansing, Mich. -- Eight people were arrested and police dispersed crowds with tear gas following Michigan State's loss to Texas in the NCAA tournament. Police dressed in riot gear and gas masks had mostly broken up the crowd downtown and reopened traffic in and out of Michigan State's campus. A crowd of about 2,000 had gathered at the university's administration building, where four cars were overturned, several small fires were set in bushes and large trash bins, and vending machines were damaged, Lt. Kevin Daley of the East Lansing Police Department said. The violence followed Michigan State's 85-76 loss...
