Paul Goldman, a Richmond lawyer who is a former Virginia Democratic party chairman, is helping represent a conservative group in challenging Newt Gingrich's disqualification from the Old Dominion ballot on March 6, Super Tuesday. Bill Pascoe, executive vice president of Citizens for the Republic, said: “We are teaming up with former Virginia Democratic Party Chairman Paul Goldman to make sure the voters of the Commonwealth have a fair and transparent presidential primary process. ...

Democratic Sen. Edd Houck announced Thursday he will not request a recount and conceded his race to Republican challenger Bryce Reeves, giving the GOP complete control of government in Richmond. Houck, a seven-term incumbent from Spotsylvania, was 86 votes behind Reeves on election night Tuesday, but the gap grew to 222 after localities tallied provisional ballots. The 0.5 percent difference in 45,077 votes was still close enough for Houck to ask for a recount, but he said he would decline that opportunity during a press conference Thursday. Reeves' victory gives the GOP a two-seat gain in the Senate and forces...

The 2006 film Amazing Grace depicts William Wilberforce's campaign to end the slave trade in Great Britain. A scene from the movie depicts the abolitionist Members of Parliament discussing how to proceed in the legislature after numerous failures. The issue had become so polarized that a direct vote on the slave trade was a losing proposition. The following dialogue between Wilberforce and fellow Member of Parliament James Stephen (who was about to present his eye witness account of slave operations to the rest of Parliament) ensues: Stephen: If we go to Parliament with this evidence, there'll be sympathy, there'll be...

An early voting report from Virginia's 1st Congressional District, epicenter for today's expected GOP tsunami in the Old Dominion. I reside in York County, not far from Fort Eustis and the U.S. Coast Guard Training Center. The district is heavily Republican; John McCain got more than 60% of the vote here last year. Polls open in Virginia at 6 a.m. I arrived at my voting place (a local elementary school) at 6:45. The parking lot was 80% full at that hour, and more cars were arriving by the minute. The level activity seemed comparable to what I saw during the...

BOLLING RECEIVES ENDORSEMENT OF FRATERNAL ORDER OF POLICE -Law enforcement coalition cites Bolling's dedication to protecting the citizens of Virginia- RICHMOND - Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling has received the endorsement of the Fraternal Order of Police. Bolling received the endorsement at a press conference earlier today at the State Capitol with FOP President P. Thomas Edwards, Bob McDonnell, Ken Cuccinelli and members of the law enforcement community "I am very pleased that the Fraternal Order of Police has chosen to endorse my re-election as Virginia's Lieutenant Governor. Throughout my career in public service I have consistently stood in support of...

August 17, 2009 Dear xxxxx: The Caps Hurt Kids rally is at the Bell Tower in Richmond's Capitol Square (9th and Franklin Street) at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Certain rules do apply to events at the Capitol: No parades are allowed on Capitol Square (We'll be playing music, but resist the temptation to form a Conga Line). No stick-holding placards will be permitted (bring a sign, but no stake). No food may be served. No parking will be available on Capitol Square. No signs or other items are permitted to be placed on the Capitol Square fence. Please remember these...

Republican candidates hold leads in all three of Virginia’s 2009 statewide races, according to a new poll released Tuesday. Former state Attorney General Bob McDonnell leads State Sen. Creigh Deeds 49 percent to 43 percent in the state’s gubernatorial race, according to an automated poll released by Public Policy Polling. Eight percent were undecided. In the contests for lieutenant governor and attorney general, GOP nominees also led their Democratic opponents by margins outside the poll’s 4-percentage-point margin of error. The poll, conducted June 30 to July 2, surveyed 617 likely general election voters. Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling leads challenger Jody...

Offshore drilling for oil and gas could bring billions of dollars and thousands of jobs to Virginia, and help secure the nation's energy future, speakers at an industry-sponsored forum said yesterday. "More energy equals more jobs for Virginia," Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling said. "That should be priority No. 1 for everybody across the commonwealth of Virginia." Bolling spoke to about 20 people at an offshore oil and gas forum in Richmond sponsored by the Virginia Manufacturers Association and the Southeast Energy Alliance. The federal government is considering leasing areas in the Atlantic Ocean off the Virginia coast for oil...

My Endorsement February 27, 2009 Dear xxxxxx, As we approach the end of the General Assembly Session, it is now time to turn our attention to the races for statewide office and for the House of Delegates. While we must elect Bob McDonnell and Bill Bolling as Governor and Lt. Governor, it is also critical that we elect another Republican as Attorney General. Today I am writing to ask you to support Ken Cuccinelli's campaign for Attorney General by becoming a delegate for Ken to the Republican Convention on May 30th in Richmond. Please set that date aside on your...

The Republican Party is holding a Convention on May 29-30, 2009, to select candidates to run for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General in the General Election. VCDL-PAC is endorsing a candidate for each of these positions at the Republican Convention: LT. GOVERNOR: William T. "Bill" Bolling. This endorsement is based on the excellent record Lt Governor Bolling established representing the interests of Virginia gun owners during his career in the Virginia General Assembly, as well as his forthright and unequivocal 100% pro-gun answers to the VCDL Candidate Survey. The Bolling campaign website is: http://www.billbolling.com ATTORNEY GENERAL: Kenneth T. "Ken" Cuccinelli,...

This February, however, Romney is well-positioned to emerge as the leader of the party and the Republican front-runner in 2012. First, money is no obstacle. Romney can self-finance, but he is also a fundraising machine. He eagerly campaigned for McCain, raising record amounts for his White House run, a gesture for which he earned political capital within the Republican Party and should expect repayment at some point. He is also currently donating money through his political action committee to House Republicans who opposed the stimulus package, and he is campaigning for Republicans around the country, including James Tedisco, who is...

No Bolling For Governor? Reports Say Lieutenant Governor Won't Run For Top Job By Associated Press Monday, March 24, 2008 RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling will seek re-election next year, two people familiar with his campaign said. Bolling intends to announce his plans in an early afternoon Capitol Square news conference. Bolling's decision not to run for governor combined with former Governor George Allen's announcement to sit out the governor's race leaves Attorney General Bob McDonnell uncontested for the Republican nomination. The election, still 20 months away, finds Democrats Brian Moran, a Delegate from Alexandria, and state...

When it comes to guns, both Sean Connaughton and Bill Bolling received high marks from the Virginia Citizens Defense League, but there are several key differences between the two candidates for lieutenant governor. Both Republicans checked the anti-gun control option for most of the 13 questions. The dispute is in the three questions they answered differently. Question 3 asked whether the candidates favor repealing laws that allow localities to fingerprint applicants for concealed handgun permits. Bolling answered yes, in favor of repeal and Connaughton answered no. "I'm a strong supporter of the right to bear arms," Connaughton said, noting that...
