Hey, if we’re going to talk about how presidential candidates treated dogs decades ago, let’s talk about how presidential candidates treated dogs decades ago. Can you name the author of this quote? “With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the...

MARATHON — After a lengthy investigation, police say a teenage girl admitted that bite marks on her body came from engaging in "fantasy biting" and not an attack as she had previously claimed. According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, the 15-year-old girl is a fan of the vampire-based "Twilight" movies and books. After being with a 19-year-old boy at her Marathon home in August, she worried about her mother seeing bruising and bite marks on her neck, arms and back.

Malaria kills nearly a million people each year, mostly children under 5 and especially in Africa. Infected mosquitoes inject immature malaria parasites into the skin when they bite; these travel to the liver where they mature and multiply. From there, they enter the bloodstream and attack red blood cells -- the phase that makes people sick. In a daring experiment in Europe, scientists used mosquitoes as flying needles to deliver a "vaccine" of live malaria parasites through their bites. The results were astounding: Everyone in the vaccine group acquired immunity to malaria; everyone in a non-vaccinated comparison group did not,...

MINNEAPOLIS—Amy Rice feared for her dog's life when a pit bull jumped over a fence into her yard and attacked her pooch. So she took matters into her own mouth. The dog had jumped a fence to get into Rice's northeast Minneapolis yard, and Rice says she feared the pit bull would kill Ella. "I didn't plan it, that's what happened. I broke the skin and had pit bull blood in my mouth," said Rice, 38. "I...

Why some people are prone to mosquito bites By Nic Fleming, Science Correspondent > Last Updated: 7:01pm BST 30/08/2007 Scientists have worked out why mosquitoes make a beeline for certain people but appear to leave others almost untouched. Specific cells in one of the three organs that make up the mosquito’s nose are tuned to identify the different chemicals that make up human body odour. To the mosquito some people’s sweat simply smells better than others because of the proportions of the carbon dioxide, octenol and other compounds that make up body odour. It is those people who are most...

Dogs in Texas are presumed safe until proven dangerous. But maybe not for long. Under a bill that got unanimous approval in the state House on Tuesday, dog owners could be sent to jail for up to 20 years after a first-time mauling, representing a sea change in canine jurisprudence. Prosecutors in Texas operate under the "first bite is free" principle: Until a dog is proven dangerous as determined by a documented attack or an official court order, their owners generally can't be held criminally liable. House Bill 1355 would establish felony penalties for the owners of dogs that seriously...

Suffolk County Health Department officials yesterday said they were "99 percent sure" the patients treated for brown recluse spider bites at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital did not have cutaneous anthrax. "I can't say it's 100 percent," said Dr. Patricia Dillon, the department's director of communicable diseases.
