CHICAGO, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Phil Hammond carries a PalmOne Treo personal digital assistant with him almost all the time. "It's like carrying my office in my pocket -- I can get my e-mail, my contact list, my notes, even my combination to my locker at the Y," Hammond, marketing director for the Boston-based interior design firm of Margulies & Associates, told UPI's Wireless World. Lawyer Jim Gunn got caught in a particularly embarrassing moment at a recent Cardinals game. He was captured on national television - thumbs punching away at his BlackBerry. And plenty of people saw him, said Gunn, a partner at Thompson Coburn in St. Louis. "I got calls saying, 'What the hell is the matter with you?'" The "matter" is the BlackBerry, a wireless, hand-held computer that lets users exchange e-mail, access the Internet and, in some models, make phone calls. Some BlackBerry owners are such heavy users that they refer to themselves as "Crackberry" addicts, referring to the highly habit-forming...

Ah, my little friend, how I have loved you. The heft of you in my hand. The window you gave me on a world beyond the confines of where I was at any given time. The pleasant rush when you went off in my breast pocket, adjacent to that other rhythmically vibrating organ—my heart. I loved you not wisely, but so well. Yet now ... I was listening to Rush Limbaugh's first hour today, and boy did he go off against T-Mobile today. He says he has a Blackberry and it does not work for 12 hours at a time, claiming T-Mobile has major, major server problems. He flat came out and said, 'DO NOT BUY T-Mobile, and use it with a Blackberry'. He was psst! Who wants to bet that he get a very quick response to fixing his problems after this dishing on national radio?

EarthLink said Wednesday that it has a new strategy for its wireless division: selling to law enforcement and other emergency-services agencies. The database, run by LocatePlus, includes names, addresses, phone numbers, prior addresses, dates of birth, social security numbers, real estate holdings, bankruptcies and criminal records. The new EarthLink effort is meant for police, firefighters, paramedics and other emergency-services workers. The emergency-services industry generates a...
