In July, the (NEH) sponsored a workshop on “History and Commemoration: The Legacies of the Pacific War in WWII” for college professors in Hawaii. Professor Penelope Blake, a veteran professor of Humanities at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Ill., was one of 25 American scholars chosen to attend the workshop, but was reportedly disheartened to find the conference “driven by an overt political bias and a blatant anti-American agenda.” Professor Blake is now reportedly calling on Congress to implement better oversight over the NEH. In a letter addressed directly to her Illinois congressman, Rep. Don Manzullo, Blake documents conference details...

In July 2010 the NEH sponsored a workshop for college professors at the East-West Center, University of Hawaii. The title of the conference was “History and Commemoration: The Legacies of the Pacific War.” As one of the 25 American scholars chosen to attend the workshop, Professor Penelope Blake anticipated an opportunity to visit hallowed sites such as Pearl Harbor, the Arizona Memorial and the Punchbowl Cemetery and engage with scholars who share her interest in studying this often neglected part of World War II history. Instead, Professor Blake was treated to the most disturbing experience of her academic career, a...

Nineteen rare watercolors by William Blake were auctioned Tuesday in New York. "The works, illustrations for "The Grave," a 1743 poem by the Scottish writer Robert Blair, were discovered five years ago by two British booksellers. At the time, experts heralded them as the most important Blake discovery in a century and said the illustrations should stay together. It appeared that the public agreed; some in the audience spoke of the breakup of the collection as a criminal procedure."

A year after Robert Blake was acquitted in criminal court of killing his wife, the former tough guy actor spends his days exercising horses at a friend's ranch and planning a comeback. He acknowledges the past year has often been a time of despair, particularly the civil trial last fall in which a jury ordered him to pay his wife's family $30 million. But the 72-year-old Blake, who was a child actor in the "Our Gang" movie series and a hard-boiled cop in the 1970s TV show "Baretta," says he's finally begun to emerge from that dark period. "I want...

Burbank, Calif. (AP) -- Six months after being acquitted of murder, actor Robert Blake took the stand Thursday in a wrongful death lawsuit and denied lying about what happened the night his wife was shot to death. During colorful, sometimes contentious exchanges with the judge and the lawyer representing Bonny Lee Bakley's family, Blake acknowledged he may have given different versions of what happened on the night Bakley died. But he said that was because he is "a human being, not a machine" and had simply erred. The star of the old "Baretta" TV show said he's dyslexic, cannot read...

FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) - American James Blake has an underdog quality that has endeared him to U.S. Open fans. They will have an opportunity to cheer him on at least one more round. Blake produced arguably the biggest win of his career Saturday, stunning second-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the third round at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The 25-year-old Blake had missed much of last year with a broken neck, a lengthy illness and the death of his father from cancer, but he began to gain attention when he won last weekend's Pilot Pen tournament in...

On the cover of my guidebook to St Petersburg's Hermitage is a painting of a woman in blue silk and white powder, hair flowing - a portrait by Thomas Gainsborough that hangs in the museum. This choice is flattering, until you notice that all the different language guides on the bookstand have nationally appropriate paintings. It's a naive bit of politeness. Not even we British go to the Hermitage to see Gainsborough. British art, historically, has its charms. In addition to Gainsborough's perfumed rococo world, we have Constable and Turner. All three, if you have grown up with the swagging,...

LOS ANGELES -- The judge in Robert Blake's murder case Wednesday reversed herself and decided to allow parts of recorded jailhouse conversations to be used at the trial, including one in which Blake referred to the family of his slain wife as "monsters." Superior Court Judge Darlene Schempp also permitted use of a segment of a February 2003 jailhouse interview the former "Baretta" television star gave journalist Barbara Walters. Last week, Schempp had barred the prosecution from using the material but agreed to listen to the recordings and reconsider. Prosecutor Shellie Samuels alleges that in the TV interview, Blake tried...

Kobe Bryant has been married for less than a year to, by anyone’s standards, a very attractive woman. Yet, he chose to betray his marriage vows, and his wife’s trust, with the understanding by some in the media and elsewhere that other than having to shell out a fortune for lavish gifts for his cuckold wife, he should be held without contempt or shame.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The California Supreme Court has ordered Los Angeles' sheriff to explain why actor Robert Blake should not have a bail hearing before going on trial for the May 4, 2001 murder of his wife, Bonnie Lee Bakley. The high court ordered the sheriff's department, which runs the county jails and investigated the murder, to show the trial court the evidence supporting a special charge of "lying in wait" against the 69-year-old former star of the "Baretta" crime-fighting TV series. The special charge makes Blake ineligible for bail. The justices ordered the sheriff's department to show "whether...

LOS ANGELES -- A judge granted defense lawyers a later hearing date of Nov. 13 for the preliminary hearing for Robert Blake and his bodyguard. The two are charged in the shooting death of the actor's wife on May 4, 2001. Lawyers for Blake and his bodyguard joined forces Monday to demand that their preliminary hearing be postponed until November, saying they are overwhelmed by evidence just disclosed by prosecutors in the murder case. The attorneys said newly disclosed evidence includes a taped conversation between Blake's slain wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, and an unidentified person she was encouraging to murder...

Would someone post the story and picture about Robert Blake not Being able to read that is on Black Sheep News? I found it to be an interesting picture. Just when we were starting to think that Earle Caldwell may actually have been dumb enough to keep a laundry list of items needed to whack Bakley, Blake's bodyguard and his lawyer have helpfully explained the need for those shovels, old rugs, Drano, and "25 Auto." This declaration from Detective Ronald Ito--along with a copy of the note found in Caldwell's Jeep--was filed yesterday (5/1) in L.A. Superior Court. (4 pages) < 1 2 3 4 >

Cops: Blake's Gun Was Used in Wife's DeathBy JIM CROGAN in Los Angeles and MAKI BECKER in New York Daily News Writers The gun that Los Angeles cops say was used to kill Robert Blake's wife has been traced back to the actor, police sources have told the Daily News. The serial number on the murder weapon, a .38-caliber Walther PPK handgun, had been filed off. But using techniques straight out of the CBS show "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," forensic sleuths were able to read the number and trace the gun to Blake, the sources said. Robert Blake did the...

Acquitted double murderer O.J. Simpson has some words of advice for "Baretta" TV star and accused wife killer Robert Blake: Keep your mouth shut. O.J. weighed in on Blake's plight through his lawyer, Yale Galanter, who told reporters Friday that his client sympathized with the ex-TV star. Simpson recommended to Blake, "Follow your lawyer's advice and keep your mouth shut," Galanter said. "Simpson totally believes in the jury system," the Juice's attorney told the New York Daily News. "And he believes that if he follows his lawyer's advice, he can get a fair shake." Aside from passing along the friendly...

On the evening of May 4, 2001, actor Robert Blake (Baretta, In Cold Blood) and his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley, ate dinner at an Italian restaurant in the Studio City section of Los Angeles. Afterward, according to Blake, the couple walked the block and a half to their car, whereupon Blake realized he'd left his gun inside the restaurant -- a gun he was carrying because Bakley believed her life was in danger. Blake left Bakley in the car and walked back to the restaurant. Nobody in the restaurant remembers Blake actually retrieving anything: He apparently drank a glass of...

I haven't seen anything lately about some stories that SHOULD still be turning up in the news.Whatever happened in the Robert Blake murder case? Last I heard, they were ready to charge someone, (Blake, I think.) And how about the windshield-hit-and-run driver? Haven't heard a word about her. And Condit declared that he wouldn't go to the Grand Jury right now, postponing it for later. Who gets to do that? Certainly not you or me!
