  • The American Media’s Last Chance for Redemption

Nobody’s perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Even when those mistakes are conscious, there is always a chance to reverse them, if one catches oneself in time. Take the wrong route; don’t be afraid to do a U-turn and correct the error. Wear the wrong necktie, dress right the next time to correct the impression. Make the wrong choice; don’t be afraid to make the right one next time. The American news media, known collectively as “the MainStream Media” or MSM for decades now, has made a collective choice: most have been part and parcel of the Democratic Party, either admittedly or...

Debate Aftermath (Associated Posers) – WASHINGTON DC – President Obama's supporters have blamed everything from the altitude in Denver to Jim Lehrer for his dismal performance at the first presidential debate against challenger Mitt Romney. For many Americans it was the first chance to see an unscripted Barack Obama and Mitt Romney without the media spin. For his part Barack Obama declared he hadn't debated Mitt Romney at all “That wasn't the real Mitt Romney!”. Later his campaign released a statement saying that a Mitt Romney clone had been used, the evidence they said was “self evident”. The supporters of...

“Let the Children Come to Jesus” (Mark 10:2-16)A portion of the Holy Gospel for today, from Mark 10, reading as follows: “And they were bringing children to [Jesus] that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.’ And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his...

Despite requests for upgraded security from Libyan Ambassador Christopher Stevens dating back several months before his murder, the US State Department couldn’t comply. Resources that could have funded more guards for both the Embassy and Consulate were “unavailable.” Among the items deemed to be a higher priority: the purchase of 1500 Chevy Volts. The outlay for these costly, yet poorly performing vehicles was part of the Defense Department’s “green initiative.” “In our judgment, providing a few Marines for one embassy or consulate was less important than making this broader commitment to preserving the environment,” said Secretary Hillary Clinton. “Of course,...

There is an accepted wisdom about the first Presidential debate between Obama and Romney. I didn’t watch it live. I rarely watch debates or conventions because I find these events almost painful to watch. I don’t need to watch two people debate to find out who’s the candidate that most closely reflects my values. There are other, better ways of doing that. I don’t need to hear dozens of people give carefully scripted speeches to form an opinion of parties and candidates. It’s like watching non-stop commercials. Who wants to subject themselves to that? The morning after the debate I...

Contrary to conventional wisdom that debates are rarely, if ever, game-changers, the first presidential debate was a demolition derby. And no amount of post-debate fact-checking, spinning or dances of one’s choice (Barack Obama has cited Mitt Romney’s tap-dancing and soft-shoe) is going to alter the impression of Romney’s winning-ness. It was quite simply a knockout performance by the Republican challenger. Or, as Notre Dame professor and political observer Robert Schmuhl put it, “Romney gets a gold medal, and Obama wasn’t even in the same competition.” Schmuhl, a professor of American studies and the author of “Statecraft and Stagecraft: American Political...

A $90 million contract to build up the Iraqi national education bureaucracy has been awarded to the Washington, D.C.-based firm Creative Associates International, which likewise will be tasked with the standardization of teacher training systems across that nation. As U.S. Trade & Aid Monitor reported earlier this year (April 16, 2012), the U.S. Agency for International Development launched the Arabic-themed USAID/Ajyal (“generations”) initiative to bring about “systems improvements to deliver quality instruction and safe learning environments.” The program will pay special attention to “expanding educational opportunities for girls, and other vulnerable populations and minorities so that they might enjoy higher...

.At the close of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia on September 18, 1787, a Mrs. Powel anxiously awaited the results and as Benjamin Franklin emerged from the long task now finished asked him directly, `Well, Doctor, what have we got? A republic or a monarchy?' `A republic, if you can keep it,' responded Franklin. Indeed, most of the domestic miseries which America`s labor, businesses and investors now suffer are traceable to irrefutable violations of our constitutionally limited Republican Form of Government. Though the number of new jobs created during the month of September was a paltry 114,000, the official unemployment rate fell from an August rate of 8.1% to 7.8%. With an estimated 120,000 entering the ranks of new job seekers each month based on population growth, the drop in the official rate of unemployment has been credited to a surge of 800,000 new part-time jobs. This was hailed by the President's Council of Economic Advisers chairman Alan Krueger as a sign that the President's plan is working. “Most people I know would prefer to work fewer, not more hours each...

That whooshing sound you heard, after the first presidential debate on Wednesday night, was the collective exhalation of the breath of every Patriot Tea Party member in the nation. We’d all hoped that Mitt Romney would at least hold his own with the ‘Anointed One’, whose brilliance, we had been assured by the Lame Stream Press, eclipsed that of all mortal men. TOTUS will overcome all potential difficulties. Due to President Obama's less than exemplary performance at the Wednesday night debate, serious concerns have been raised that not providing him even one single teleprompter was unfair. It was unfair, particularly in view of his great reliance on TOTUS. The truth is that President Obama needs a teleprompter at all times, even during his solitary morning meditations on the throne in the family bathroom. Governor Romney, on the other hand, neither needs nor uses one for any purpose. Their styles are very different and for the debate to have favored Governor Romney's style...

In yet another mass email to its supporters, the Obama campaign is again demanding money. However, the wording reveals a rather Orwellian secret: the campaign knows if you have donated or not based solely on the email address they are tracking. The email, from campaign manager Jim Messina, starts average enough. Messina touts the President and the money they've raised. For example, "more than 1.8 million Americans -- 567,044 of whom were first-time donors -- giving an average donation of just $53. And 98% of the donations were $250 and under." But things turn south very quickly. The email quickly...

The three week delay is being spun as American and Libyans officials declared the area unsafe and that the FBI was in fear of its own safety, which begs the question, do they have an office in Detroit? The first debate is over. Obama had his hat handed to him by Mitt. James Taranto, in an excellent piece in the WSJ this week, suggests that Obama's failure was inevitable, because he's been coddled, pampered by the MSM for more than 4 years, and thus the first time he faced an articulate, prepared, challenger, Obama wasn't ready. The problem with this argument is that it suggests that next time Obama will be much better prepared, bring his A-game. What if that's just plain wrong? What if what we saw Wednesday night is the best that Obama has to offer?

Welch explained his rationale to the MSNBC host: “We had 600,000 government jobs added in the last two months. We had 873,00 jobs by a household survey — which is a total estimate — from 50,000 phone calls. Of those, 600,000 were temporary workers. Chris, these numbers are all a series of...

With the Supreme Court due to consider Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin this coming week, cases for and against affirmative action have been dominating the education news cycle. The progressive Century Foundation recently issued a report arguing that the Supreme Court will likely greatly restrict racial preferences in college admissions. Instead, argue the liberal authors, it’s time to use class-based admissions policies and other indirect ways to create “diversity” on campus. You can read my recent blog entry, “Racial Preferences Under Review,” for more details on this Supreme Court case and The Century Foundation’s proposals. A recent poll...

Actor and comedian Steve Martin is a wild and crazy guy so it is no surprise that he would make a bizarre political endorsement. In this case the endorsement was for Bob Kerrey who is running for the senate seat from Nebraska. However, Steve Martin does not once mention Bob Kerrey or anything political in the "endorsement." Instead, Martin in the guise of a home crafts expert shows us how to make a wad of paper. Your humble correspondent found the advice on how to make a wad of paper quite useful. In fact, for years I have struggled to...

Romney needs to craft a commercial asking this question to rebut the phony employment numbers being released by The Dumb's Bureau of Lies and Spin. You may be unemployed because of The Won, or you might be working two or three jobs because of The Won. The question gets to the heart of the debate.

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF The Yalta Conference briefing book stated that the United States did not favor any Chinese political faction, but only “a broadly representative government which will bring about internal unity, including reconcilement of Kuomintang-Communist differences.” In an echo familiar from countless modern-day speeches about American allies in the Middle East, political reform was touted as the best defense against Communism. And by political reform, Truman meant bringing the Communists into the government for a peaceful and unified China. American aid to the Nationalists was explicitly conditioned on their acceptance of that form of peace and unity. Political...

Electric cars might cause as much or more pollution than conventional gas vehicles, according to researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. According to a study published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology, “the production phase of electric vehicles proved substantially more environmentally intensive” than the production process for traditional gas-powered cars. Specifically, the study found that electric car factories can emit more toxic waste than gas-burning car factories. And greenhouse gas emissions rise exponentially if coal is used to produce the electricity necessary to charge “green” vehicles, according to the study. The researchers compared the overall life-cycle...

Whoomp there it is: polling results just up at the National Journal, comparing samples taken on Tuesday vs Thursday, book-ending the debate night: Tues Oct 2: Obama 49   Romney 45    Obama +4  Thurs Oct 4: Obama 46  Romney 47   Romney +1  (Clarus Research/590 Likely Voters/4% margin-for-error) Anxiously awaiting more of the same... Another interesting development is absentee ballot requests: as noted at Ace of Spades, Iowa is running a D+77,000 margin at this point in time. Yet while the media keeps telling us this is gonna be 2008-The-Sequel, ballot requests were at D+100k just a week ago, and the trend ain't their friend  Democrats enjoyed a +150k...

The media will no doubt trumpet the new 7.8% unemployment rate as evidence that Obama’s policies are working. Unfortunately the new 7.8% figure is a political fraud. The numbers don’t add up. The government claims 114,000 jobs were added last month, which isn’t all that great of a number. This resulted in a 0.3% drop in unemployment? That isn’t believable in the least. The ranks of the unemployed decreased by 456,000 last month. Well wait a minute, how does that figure decrease by so much when only 114,000 new jobs were created? The government is tossing 340,000+ people out of...

There is a talk show host where I come from that likes to warn his listeners not to get caught up in the thick of thin things. By this, he means, don't get sucked into a debate about insignificant but sexy issues and then lose sight of the really important ones. This is especially good advice in the political campaign season because politicians and their handlers love to find a sexy molehill and then spin it into a mountain. A case in point is Mitt Romney's wealth (Breaking: Mitt Romney Still Filthy Rich) or Ann Romney's horseback riding (MS and...

(Associated Posers) – SEOUL, South Korea – A suspected North Korean soldier who killed his platoon and company commanders before crossing the border into South Korea has been identified as Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea. South Korean authorities now say that Kim Jong-un was a puppet all along for a small cabal of military leaders. The defection of Kim Jong-un from North Korea is a serious blow to that hermit kingdom, leaving the survival of the communist state in serious doubt. Kim Jong-un has reportedly told Seoul authorities that the real political power in the country are...
