In the past 12 months, the administration opened 41 cases in federal court to seize land to build a wall along the southern border of Texas. Nearly half of those cases – 16, or 39 percent - were filed in the past two months. The bulk of the new filings came in March, when the administration opened 12 cases, the most in any month under Trump, a Reuters review of federal filings found. The administration wants immediate possession, bypassing traditional procedural steps and forcing landowners to move more swiftly, records show.

Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf announced Tuesday that he will again waive dozens of laws in order to expedite wall construction and address an “acute and immediate need” to block unlawful border crossings. Tuesday's order focuses on Starr County, Texas, communities including Salineno, Escobares and Rio Grande City. The waived laws include the National Environmental Policy Act, the Clean Air Act and the Archaeological and Historic Preservation Act. “In order to ensure the expeditious construction of the barriers and roads in the project areas, I have determined that it is necessary that I exercise the authority that is vested in...

Pandemic or not, Border Patrol intends to award the contract to construct the initial 32 miles of border wall in the Laredo area by mid-May... When construction begins will depend on how much land is acquired. “So we won’t necessarily be acquiring all of the land to start the project, but we need to acquire sufficient real estate to allow the project to start,” he said. Federal agents have been working to convince local landowners to sign right of entry documents so that they can survey their properties without having to go through court proceedings, saving time and possibly leading...

BFBC has been awarded a $569M contract modification to design and build a 17.17-mile security wall along the Customs and Border Protection's San Diego and El Centro sectors in California. The Department of Defense said Monday it estimates that the company will finish the project in June 30, 2021. USACE initially awarded BFBC a potential $141.7M contract in May 2019 to replace the El Centro and Yuma vehicle and pedestrian barrier systems. The agency obligated the full amount of the modification at the time of award from its fiscal 2020 operations and maintenance funds.

“This is what happened on 9/11 — on steroids. Mexico has locked down a lot of their country … and then they [migrants] think if they come to the U.S., they’re going to catch the virus.” To put this in perspective, in February border officials apprehended 30,000 illegal aliens, whereas in May of last year they apprehended a whopping 132,000 illegals. Yet at the current rate of an estimated 150 apprehensions per week, border officials are slated to apprehend fewer than 1,000 by the end of the month... “The onslaught of the coronavirus has not only sent the global economy...

President Donald Trump was within his constitutional authority to declare a national emergency at the southern border last year, a federal judge ruled Thursday, but environmental groups can move forward on a central challenge in their lawsuit: whether the president can divert $3.6 billion in military funds to build a border wall. The environmental groups, which include the Center for Biological Diversity and the Rio Grande International Study Center, each filed lawsuits arguing Trump abused his authority by reallocating money from military construction accounts to fund a southern border wall without congressional approval... The construction of several new miles of border wall along the U.S.-Mexico boundary has continued while much of the country has gone on lockdown. That has met with the approval of President Donald Trump, who sees it as a way of keeping the country safe. In response to a tweet by conservative pundit Charlie Kirk who praised Trump for stopping flights from China to contain the coronavirus and continuing to build the wall March 10, the president tweeted: "Going up fast. We need the Wall more than ever!" The Washington Times reported Saturday that 140 miles of border wall have...

The federal government has constructed more than 40 miles of wall along the southern border with Mexico since the outbreak of the coronavirus in the United States. More than half of the additional wall and fencing have been constructed since early February, the Washington Times reported. The first confirmed case of the COVID-19 virus was reported on Jan. 20. “Today is not the time to play politics with the lives of U.S. Citizens," Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, told the newspaper. "Walls have proven to stop illegal entries into the United States, therefore they are an...

The massive stimulus package awaiting a vote in the Senate would prohibit the Pentagon from shifting $10.5 billion in coronavirus funding to a counter-drug account it has been using to fund President Trump’s southern border wall. According to bill text released by the Senate Appropriations Committee, the bill would allow the Pentagon to transfer the coronavirus funds to other accounts “except for ‘Drug Interdiction and Counter-Drug Activities, Defense.’” The stimulus deal agreed to early Wednesday by the White House and Senate leaders would provide the Pentagon a total of $10.5 billion. That includes $1.5 billion for the National Guard and...

The Trump administration on Friday announced sweeping new travel restrictions between U.S. and Mexico in the latest step to curb the spread of the coronavirus — it halted non-essential travel and moved to turn back any illegal immigrants trying to enter the country. "The United States and Mexico have agreed to restrict non-essential travel across our shared border," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a White House press briefing with other top officials. Officials emphasized that the restrictions would not affect lawful trade and commerce, as the administration seeks to keep the economic supply chain going amid the ongoing...

Another 74 miles of 30-foot tall wall is set to be built on the Arizona-Mexico border, federal officials said on Monday. Customs and Border Protection officials on Monday asked for public comment on new border wall projects in Cochise, Pima and Santa Cruz counties. These projects are in addition to 63 miles of wall being built in Cochise and Pima counties, as well as other wall projects in Yuma County. The new wall projects announced Monday will consist of 30-foot tall steel poles, known as bollards, that are 6 inches in diameter, according to CBP. This is the same design...
