  • Insane: Liberals Contemplate $1 Trillion Platinum Coin to "Solve" Debt Limit Issue

Welcome to Zimbabwe.  This is not a parody -- it is an actual report from the Washington Post:   Some economists and legal scholars have suggested that the “platinum coin option” is one way to defuse a crisis if Congress can’t or won’t lift the debt ceiling soon. At least in theory. The U.S. government is, after all, facing a real problem. The Treasury Department will hit its $16.4 trillion borrowing limit by next February at the latest. Unless Congress reaches an agreement to raise that borrowing limit, the government will no longer be able to borrow enough money...

CAIRO: Struggling to subdue continuing street protests, the government of PresidentMohamed Morsi has approved legislation reimposing martial law by calling on the armed forces to keep order and authorizing soldiers to arrest civilians, Egypt's state media reported on Saturday. Morsi has not yet issued the order, the flagship state newspaper Al Ahram reported. But even if merely a threat, the preparation of the measure suggested an escalation in the political battle between Egypt's new Islamist leaders and their secular opponents over an Islamist-backed draft constitution. The standoff has already threatened to derail the culmination of Egypt's promised transition to a...

The White House Correspondents Association is strongly urging the Obama administration to allow press access to the presidents official swearing-in ceremony on Jan. 20, following indications from inauguration committee officials that the event could potentially be closed to the press. Mindful of the historic nature of this occasion, we expect the White House will continue the long tradition of opening the Presidents official swearing-in to full press access, and we as an organization are looking forward to working with the administration to make that happen, Ed Henry, the Fox News correspondent and president of the White House Correspondents Association, said...

Washington Consumers saved nearly $1.5 billion in 2011 as a result of rules in President Obamas healthcare law that limit what insurance companies can spend on expenses unrelated to medical care, including profit, a new analysis shows. Much of those savings an estimated $1.1 billion came in rebates to consumers required because insurers had exceeded the required limits. The study by the New York-based Commonwealth Fund also suggests that the Affordable Care Act forced insurers to become more efficient by limiting their administrative expenses, a key goal of the 2010 law. In some cases, insurers passed savings...

This morning, a majority of the citizen-led Boulder County, Colorado Canvass Board, a legally mandated election oversight board, voted not to certify the Abstract of Votes prepared by Boulder County Clerk and Recorder Hillary Hall. The members who voted not to certify were denied an opportunity to publicly explain the reasons for their decision to the other members of the Board. The members of the Board who disagreed with the majority decision declined to review the majority's Secretary of State required report. Those same members had also declined invitations from the majority to join in discussions of potential problem resolution...
