GAINESVILLE - Attorney Lydia Sartain said Monday she wants to set the record straight by saying she did not personally prosecute her now client, runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks in 1996. The Atlanta Journal reported Sunday that Sartain was the prosecutor of the shoplifting arrest but Sartain said the pre-trail diversion program handled the charges. "Those folks handled her case." Sartain said. "She qualified for the program and evidently completed the program. Subsequent offenses were prosecuted by the state court and municipal courts, so I was not involved in those." She added even if she had prosecuted Wilbanks, it would not...

Never has our nation been more united than in our current consensus that Jennifer Wilbanks is officially coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs. I’m talkin’ coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs. Y’know, we can’t seem to harmonize over Iraq, judicial nominees, or what to do with social security, but we have formally joined in one accord and have spewed our national coffee over the goggle-eyed runaway bride, aka, Jenny from Georgia. It seems as if this Georgia peach has officially begun to turn. For what it’s worth, here’s what I propose we require of this damsel who’s hanging on by a thin wire: 1....

DULUTH, Ga. — Townspeople who joined in the three-day search for runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks are getting increasingly peeved that they still have not heard an apology from her. Her attorney said Wilbanks plans to issue a statement Thursday. Jose Armando Nino drives his lawnmower past a billboard with the likeness of runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks in Duluth, Ga., Tuesday, May 3, 2005. Wilbanks, who had vanished Tuesday, April 26 after saying she was going out jogging, initially told authorities she was abducted. But she later admitted she took a cross-country bus trip to Albuquerque, N.M., to avoid her lavish,...

I don’t purport to be an authority. But it seems to me having as many bridal showers as Elizabeth Taylor Hilton Wilding Todd Fisher Burton Burton Warner Fortensky has had marriages is an obvious red flag. Things are spiraling out of control. Weddings have a way of doing that. Almost everyone, even those remotely involved, has a suggestion or two. The bride and groom, trying to satisfy as many people as possible, often end up making arrangements they really aren’t happy with. The result is what should be a joyful celebration turns into a nerve-racking, embittering experience. This week’s adventure...

An advocacy group for Hispanics is demanding an apology from the bride-to-be who skipped town days before her lavish wedding and falsely claimed she had been abducted by a Hispanic man. The president of the group Hispanics Across America said Jennifer Wilbanks' cover story before admitting to a case of cold feet endangered Hispanic males across the country and contributed to bias. "While I understand this is a troubled woman, we cannot and will not stand for any racial stereotyping of Hispanics as criminals and thugs," Fernando Mateo said. Wilbanks, 32, touched off an extensive search last week when she...

Last Tuesday, 32-year-old Jennifer Wilbanks, a resident of Duluth Georgia, went out jogging and disappeared. Her disappearance was out of character for the young woman who was to be married the following Saturday. Almost immediately, the police began an investigation and a massive search was underway that involved over 100 police officers and several hundred volunteers. All that was found was a clump of hair that might have been Jennifer’s. Early Saturday morning, Wilbanks went to a payphone located at a 7-11 store in Albuquerque New Mexico and phoned her family and 911. She told both her family and the...

I sit here on a Tuesday morning wondering what has happened to our news establishments. Normally I denounce the liberal media, but last night normally conservative news sources were awash with the story of the "runaway" bride. It is not that I do not feel for this poor soul, I just think there stories of greater significance to the world than hers. Some of those to consider: • United Nations reassessing Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty • North Korea fires missile into sea of Japan • Secretary of State Rice holds her ground vs. Kim Jong IL • Iraqi government set to...

Those who subscribe to the retro and misguided theories of 20th century psychology believe there is no age at which a person is accountable for his or her actions. No matter how egregious, premeditated, arch or criminal, there is always a mitigating "reason" – which in the "non-judgmental" world of psychobabbling therapists can never be deemed wrong or evil or stupid or a matter of bad character. That reason, the thinking goes, can be traced back to one's childhood and especially one's parents. And no matter how many years or decades have elapsed, no matter what the influence of peers,...

DULUTH, Ga. - A prosecutor said Sunday that he wants to review whether the runaway bride-to-be who admitted she made up a kidnapping story should be charged for making false statements to the police. Jennifer Wilbanks returned to this tight-knit town on Saturday after a cross-country bus trip took her through Las Vegas, Nev., to Albuquerque, N.M., as hundreds of volunteers searched for her. She initially told authorities she had been abducted while jogging, but eventually admitted her kidnapping story was fabricated and she had run away because she had cold feet for her wedding, which was planned for Saturday....

Her head covered by what looked like a bad Indian blanket from the Ward Churchill Souvenir Shop, Jennifer Wilbanks Saturday was led by a couple of cops through the Albuquerque airport to board a flight for Atlanta, where she had some bigtime explaining to do. Veiled as she was, Ms. Wilbanks somewhat resembled Michael Jackson's urchin, "Blanket," back when Michael was dangling him over that hotel railing in Berlin. Unlike "Blanket," however, my guess is Ms. Wilbanks would have welcomed the sensation of tumbling into a crowd of milling Germans right at that point. Jennifer Wilbanks, of course, was the...

Duluth bride-to-be who vanished just days before her wedding turned up in New Mexico and fabricated a tale of abduction before admitting Saturday that she had gotten cold feet and "needed some time alone," police said. Jennifer Wilbanks, 32, was in police custody more than 1,420 miles from her home on what was supposed to be her wedding day. "It turns out that Miss Wilbanks basically felt the pressure of this large wedding and could not handle it," said Duluth Police Chief Randy Belcher. He said there would be no criminal charges. Wilbanks, whose disappearance set off a nationwide hunt,...
