DENVER — Tom Tancredo isn’t trashing Bob Beauprez, but he’s demanding one of his biggest benefactors, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, come clean about the Republican Governors Association’s influence on Colorado’s GOP gubernatorial primary. On Monday, the Denver Post reported that a campaign finance watchdog group discovered that the RGA, which Christie chairs, funneled money to help Beauprez through the Republican Attorney Generals Association despite its public pledge not to attempt to influence GOP primaries. (SNIP) “We already have a situation in Mississippi where grassroots Republicans feel disenfranchised by party elites. We need to avoid a repeat in Colorado. “Governor...

The heartbreaking images are forever engrained in many of our minds. Friday marks the seventh anniversary of when the 35W Bridge came crashing down during the evening rush hour in 2007. A total of 13 people were killed and 145 were hurt. Ana Vences was one of 52 children on a school bus coming home from a field trip when the bridge collapsed. The George Washington Bridge spanning New York and New Jersey is getting a fence to help curb suicides as the number of deaths there approaches record levels. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says there have been 13 suicides and 40 rescues on the span so far this year. There were 16 deaths for all of 2013. Plans call for erecting a 9-foot fence to replace the current railing to make jumping from the bridge difficult. Chief structural engineer Bernie Yostpile tells The Record newspaper that the project will cost $37 million to $47 million and will...

For almost a year and a half workers had been constructing a bridge to cross the main Interstate that runs between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, but it took just minutes to bring the entire structure crashing to the ground. The blaze began after a construction workers' blowtorch was fanned by strong winds and ignited the wooden scaffolding that was being used to build the new flyover, across Interstate 15 in Herperia, California. Driven by high winds, the fire took hold extremely quickly and began burning the supports surrounding the bridge. Debris began to fell onto the I-15 minutes after...

Christie is not a bully. If anything, he’s a pansy, a man terrified of the liberal media, of Wall Street, of Silicon Valley, of Obama, of Bruce Springsteen, of Mark Zuckerberg, of Chuck Schumer. Something doesn't look quite right A Redditor with a good eye caught this still from NBC's Sunday night pregame show Football Night in America, where if you look closely, the Golden Gate Bridge has an extra tower. Also in this redesign of the bridge, the suspension cables just drift into space from the three towers (No need for those! They're just decoration!). Whether they march or soar, straddle or slide, the best bridges take command of the landscape as though they were destined to be there all along. By that standard, the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge falls short. There's a lot to like about the 2.2-mile procession from Oakland to Yerba Buena Island. Small details catch you by surprise and the main attraction, the web of cables slung from a central tower to cradle the roadway within, has the feel of an airy cathedral inside. Viewed from afar, the white lines of steel radiate a gracious strength. But the...

GIG HARBOR — Tacoma Narrows Bridge tolls were always going to increase. Bond payments were set up that way. The questions are when and how much. Preliminary answers from a workshop Wednesday night are July 1 and a lot. Department of Transportation experts kicked off the toll-raising process by updating the bridge's citizen advisory committee with the latest traffic and revenue numbers. They also provided four toll scenarios. In them, the electronic rate would jump from $2.75 to $4.25 or $4.50, the manual rate from $4 to $5.50 or $6, and the photo tolling rate from $5.50 to $7 or...

MIRS has reported that all 12 Democrats in the state senate — only four of whom are from Detroit — will vote “yes” on a controversial Detroit-Windsor bridge, but only if the deal includes a wish list of “community benefits” being written by Sen. Tupac Hunter, D-Detroit. What are these “community benefits”? The fancy labels like “employment training and related facilities;” “housing;” “economic development;” “green development initiatives;” and more sound nice, but the benefits of these programs are, at the very best, uncertain. Here’s what is certain: For the political system’s foot soldiers, these programs translate into jobs with the...

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City police say about 500 protesters have been arrested after they swarmed the Brooklyn Bridge and shut down a lane of traffic for several hours. You know all those rusting bridges that President Obama wants to spend billions more dollars repairing to allegedly stimulate the economy? He's headed out to one today which he's described as a "bridge that needs repair between Ohio and Kentucky that's on one of the busiest trucking routes in North America." It is on a busy trucking route, spanning the Ohio River between Covington, Ky., and Cincinnati. It's the Brent Spence Bridge. It doesn't really need repairs. It's got decades of good life left in its steel spans. It's just overloaded. The bridge was built to handle 85,000 cars and...

The 48-year-old Brent Spence Bridge spanning the Ohio River near Cincinnati isn't much to look at. But for President Obama, it's become a rallying cry for his $477 billion jobs plan. He referred to it in his Sept. 8 speech to Congress, saying "there's a bridge that needs repair between Ohio and Kentucky that's on one of the busiest trucking routes in North America." And on Thursday he plans to use Brent Spence as the backdrop for another pitch for his jobs bill, which includes $27 billion in "immediate" highway spending. But while local officials are delighted with Obama's attention,...
