Andrade gave the employee his cell phone number before he dropped him off.

Saying the Pledge of Allegiance has no educational value, a progressive activist group is pushing for Brookline to stop recitations of the pledge in public schools. Members of Brookline PAX are asking Town Meeting this fall to vote in favor of a resolution calling for the School Committee to rescind its pledge policy and stop it from being recited in schools. Martin Rosenthal, co-chair of Brookline Pax, said that though the recitation of the pledge is voluntary, there is subtle and sometimes overt pressure on students, especially younger children, to participate, which he said makes his “skin crawl.” “It just...

The principal of a public school in Brookline, Mass., is asking parents to fill out permission slips before their children can participate in a weekly recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. Gerardo Martinez, the principal of The Devotion School, informed parents that the school would begin reciting the pledge in January over the public address system. Attached to the letter was a form that asked parents to check either: "Yes, my child will participate in the weekly Pledge of Allegiance" or "No, my child will not participate in the weekly Pledge of Allegiance." "I urge you to have a conversation...

BROOKLINE -- Residents, some of whom have been coming here for 20 years, turned out in droves this morning at the Mobil station on Harvard Street to voice their support for a local merchant whose life was turned upside-down this week. Dozens filled their tanks to help Elias Audy make up for the past two days, during which business at his two gas stations has been disrupted after federal agents appeared Thursday, seeking evidence that might link one of his newly hired employees to the failed car bomb attack this month in New York’s Times Square. "We all love him,"...

A Brookline resident is targeting next week’s Town Meeting as the launching pad for the impeachment of President Bush. Of course, it’s nonbinding. “I can no longer stay silent with the current administration,” said Jonathan Margolis, who vows to place the resolution before fellow voters. Town Meeting, a unique Yankee institution, is usually saved for tax hikes, water projects and new schools. Margolis said he’s dipping into national politics at the grassroots of democracy. It worked for our forefathers, he argues. “Town Meeting is a place where citizens can speak up,” he said. “The Revolution started this way - one...

Hating Christopher Columbus at Pierce School Columbus Day: to celebrate or not to celebrate? That was the question posed to seventh graders at Pierce School in Brookline as a project for their special unit on Christopher Columbus, taught during the weeks preceding Columbus Day. The answers were to be published in the opinion section of the Brookline TAB, the town's newspaper, which I stumbled across while browsing the noteworthy updates of TABs across the state of Massachusetts (I do this weekly and I recommend this activity highly as it has proved to yield plenty of entertainment for the whole...

The Boston Chapter of the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, GLSEN Boston, said the distribution at an April 30 event at Brookline High School violated its policy that no sexually explicit materials be made available. A German shepherd named Fero did something that he’s never done before and because he did, a 10-year-old boy is safe with his family. On Tuesday afternoon Fero went into the woods with his handler, Nashua police officer Jeff Connors, and found Ross Kolesar, who had wandered away from a party and was lost for well over an hour.Fero is not a search and rescue dog, or at least he isn’t under normal circumstances. He’s a patrol dog, a drug-sniffing dog, one who is used to apprehending suspects, not rescuing lost children from swamps. But on Aug. 27, that’s exactly...
