Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a bill that would have required police to obtain warrants for surveillance by drone, making California the latest state to weigh on an issue that is dividing lawmakers across the country. Mr. Brown's decision comes as the nation grapples with how to balance concerns over privacy and civil liberties with a technology that police departments say can serve as a powerful law-enforcement tool.

California Gov. Jerry Brown approved $3 million in taxpayer-funded legal aid to illegal alien children fighting deportation hearings--yet vetoed $100 million for state-funded universities, citing low property tax receipts. The funding for lawyers for the illegal alien minors comes amidst a nationwide push by outgoing U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to recruit legal talent to represent the children and teenagers--who often cross the U.S.-Mexico border unaccompanied-- against law enforcement proceedings. Holder is the nation's chief law enforcement officer. President Barack Obama and other Democrats have supported the legal recruitment effort. "Helping these young people navigate our legal system is the decent thing to do...

Ferguson, Missouri, Police Officer Shot Saturday Evening By Tom Winter A Ferguson police officer was shot Saturday night in the St. Louis suburb where the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teen sparked days of protests, according to officials. The officer was shot close to the area impacted by protests last month over the shooting of Michael Brown, a senior local police source with official knowledge of the situation told NBC News. St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said he did not think the officer's shooting was related to two separate protests about Michael Brown's shooting that were...

Tennesseeans, this is what I wrote for my fellow parishioners, making the case that we ought to consider leaving the GOVERNOR line blank, and just voting Pro-Life YesOn1. Your comments, please? I personally am convinced that the governor's election means nada, since Haslam is going to win unless Christ comes again, or a supercaldera blows somewhere to the West of Memphis and destroys our beloved RockyTop altogether. Throughout her political career, including during her current race against former GOP Sen. Scott Brown, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D., N.H.) has touted her experience as a small business owner. Shaheen’s small business “experience” was co-running a store that once sold thousands of dollars-worth of stolen jewelry. “As the former owner and manager of a small retail business, Senator Shaheen knows what it’s like to worry about meeting payroll and inventory costs to keep a business going,” the Issues section of her Senate website declares. Her Senate biography also describes her as a “former small business owner.” This week, the Shaheen...

No charges have been filed against Officer Darren Wilson despite weeks of rioting and looting by angry blacks in Ferguson. Many of the witnesses to the shooting have turned out to be unreliable. It has been over a month since Michael Brown was shot and killed in Ferguson, Mo., and we have yet to hear the police officer's version of events. Was Officer Darren Wilson badly injured in his scuffle with Brown? Did Brown attempt to seize the officer's weapon? Did Wilson have reason to fear for his own life? None of these answers has been forthcoming, which is odd and, frankly, suspicious. sacremento -- In a lively and sometimes raucous debate, Gov. Jerry Brown and Republican challenger Neel Kashkari provided Californians with two very different visions Thursday night of how they would spend the next four years as governor. For Brown, seeking his record fourth term in office, it was a promise of more of the same, a continuing measured improvement in the state's financial and social well-being. That's not good enough, Kashkari said. "I'm running for governor to help your family," he said in his closing statement. "Don't settle for incrementalism. ... We need big changes."

The crowd grew rapidly beginning about 1 p.m. after earlier marching from the site of Brown's shooting by a police officer to a city park, where Brown's family spoke. The march was billed as a protest "against police killings, brutality, profiling and legal cover-ups." Organizers said people would be coming from around the country for the march. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon drew criticism from his own Lt. Governor Tuesday when he said "a vigorous prosecution must now be pursued" in the shooting death of black 18-year-old Michael Brown by white police Officer Darren Wilson in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson. ****** "We have a responsibility," Nixon said, "to come together, and do everything we can to achieve justice for [Brown's] family." Nixon added that McCulloch and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder had an obligation "to achieve justice in the shooting death of Michael Brown must be carried out thoroughly, promptly, and correctly."

Not content with a regular prosecution or a vigorous investigation, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon said he hopes that Ferguson, Missouri, police officer Darren Wilson will receive a “vigorous prosecution” in the shooting death of Michael Brown on Aug. 9. “A vigorous prosecution must now be pursued,” Nixon said in a five minute video address posted to his website Tuesday. “The democratically elected St. Louis county prosecutor and the attorney general of the United States each have a job to do,” said Nixon, a Democrat. “Their obligation to achieve justice in the shooting death of Michael Brown must be carried out...

At 1:14 in the video at link, notice how Brown approaches the store owner then pushes him hard. Brown then moves to exit the store then turns around to approach the store owner a SECOND time. According to some witnesses, this 're-approach' is the same technique used against Officer Wilson. Allegedly, Brown approached Wilson attempting to push him back into his patrol car then punching him in the face, then walks away only to approach Wilson a SECOND time.

Reading the profile of Michael Brown by Molly Hennessy-Fiske of the Los Angeles Times over the weekend, one paragraph stood out. He was heavyset and quiet, but not shy. He recorded rap music with his best friend and smoked marijuana with other young men. Hennessy-Fiske also points out that cigarillos, the kind that Brown allegedly stole from a convenience store, are “often used to smoke marijuana.” So, it should hardly come as a shock that Michael Brown had marijuana in his system when he was shot and killed by Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson on Aug. 9. If anything, this...

On Hardball Monday, MSNBC contributor Michelle Bernard said the U.S. is on the verge of experiencing a “genocide” of young black men. Bernard was on the program with the Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson to discuss the ongoing unrest in Ferguson, Mo., following the police shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown. Bernard, who is black, said her 11-year-old son had asked her recently if someone was going to shoot him, as was the case with Brown.
