In a late summer surge, U.S. Sen. Scott Brown has jumped to a 5 point lead in a new poll in his race for re-election. Public Policy Polling places Brown in the lead over his Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren 49-44 percent. This is the same poll that placed Warren ahead by 5 points in March.

  • U.S. Sen. Scott Brown urges challenger Elizabeth Warren to pay for mailing costs

U.S. Sen. Scott Brown is calling on Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren to reimburse Massachusetts for the cost of mailing voter registration letters to welfare recipients. Brown said Friday the forms were sent to "aid" Warren's Senate campaign, urging her to pay back the nearly $276,000 Massachusetts spent on mailing. Warren's campaign called Brown's request a "ridiculous political stunt," saying the forms were sent out as an enforcement of a bipartisan law. Recently Brown faulted Massachusetts officials for sending the letters to nearly half a million welfare recipients as part of a court settlement. Warren's daughter sits on the board of...

The ad encourages the United States to follow the lead of the Asian Communist country and "do better." Watch the ad below, courtesy of the New York Sun: "We've got bridges and roads in need of repair and thousands of people in need of work. Why aren’t we rebuilding America?” Warren says in the 30-second ad. “Our competitors are putting people to work,...

A rising star in the Democratic Party, Warren will speak in primetime just before former President Bill Clinton, who will enter President Obama’s name into the nomination. Of the prime speaking slot, Warren said, "It will be an honor to share the convention stage with President Clinton on Wednesday, and to talk about what is happening to America's families."

Well, according to the Boston Globe, that's the latest rumor. The crowds at political conventions feast on partisan red meat, and they could end up with a bellyful when the Republicans and Democrats meet back to back beginning late next month. An Obama campaign official confirmed to the Globe Wednesday that US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren is being considered as a possible keynote speaker for the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C. It would give the Massachusetts Democrat a national platform for her high-profile race against Senator Scott Brown, the same launch pad that Barack Obama used to vault into...

California's death penalty has been in limbo since 2006, when a federal judge stayed the execution of Michael Morales, who was sentenced to death for the brutal 1981 murder and rape of 17-year-old Terri Winchell. The judge was fearful lest the state's three-drug lethal injection protocol would cause Morales undue pain. Since then, a number of states have switched to a one-drug protocol. Why hasn't California? The answer could be that Gov. Jerry Brown and Attorney General Kamala Harris don't want the death penalty to work. Brown and Harris are personally opposed to the death penalty, but when they campaigned...

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, one of the most outspoken defenders of Wall Street, has sided against one of the financial industry’s biggest critics in a hotly contested Senate race in his native Massachusetts. Mr. Bloomberg has agreed to host a fund-raiser at his Upper East Side town house for the re-election campaign of Senator Scott P. Brown, a Republican, who is being challenged by a fiery consumer advocate, Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat who is also a professor at Harvard Law School.

Republican operatives in Washington are praising Scott Brown's latest campaign ad. The ad, a contrast spot being run by the Republican Massachusetts senator, shows that Brown's Democratic opponent, Elizabeth Warren, is to the left on economic issues of John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, Lyndon B. Johnson, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan. Watch here: Instead of being in the mainstream, Warren, along with President Barack Obama, is shown to be an opponent of free enterprise. The ad is called, "Let America Be America Again." "Devastating," says one Republican operative. "Long--but does a really good job of showing how radical the Obama/Warren...

Friend, Three months ago, we announced some pretty incredible 1st quarter fundraising numbers. So Scott Brown changed his game plan. For months now, Scott Brown and his supporters have done anything and everything to tear down this campaign and avoid the real issues facing the people of Massachusetts. Massachusetts voters are smart -- and they've seen past the spin. A new PPP poll out today shows the race is still tied, 46-46. But we've got one more hurdle this week, and it's a big one. Saturday night is our next important fundraising deadline -- and we need to prove that...

Elizabeth Warren for President? Democrats' Barren 2016 BenchBy Molly Ball, The Atlantic | National Journal – 5 hrs ago Regardless of whether the president wins re-election, the Obama era will be over before long. Democrats will have to find a new leader on whom to pin their hopes. But who? I went to a conference of liberal activists this week hoping to find out whom the party's activist base sees as its up-and-coming stars. But the exercise turned out to be revealing largely for how unprepared people were to answer the question. Nearly every answer I got began with a...

Deep-pocketed groups supporting U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown or Republican challenger Josh Mandel have spent millions of dollars to beat up the other guy. Each side is constantly accusing the other of being out of touch with average Ohioans. But a $100,000 online advertising push launched today by Workers' Voice, the super political action committee affiliated with the AFL-CIO, aims to tug at the emotions of the put-upon Cleveland sports fan. The web ads depict Mandel, the Republican state treasurer, in ex-Cavaliers' star LeBron James' iconic pre-game pose under the tagline "Witness the Mandel investigation" -- a reference to the federal...

Brown, Warren Scrap Over Native American ControversyBy Jonathan Miller and Matt Vasilogambros | National Journal Thu, Jun 14, 2012 In a fight to keep his Senate seat in Massachusetts, Republican Scott Brown lashed out Thursday at Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren, saying she failed the test of “truthfulness and credibility and honesty” as evidenced by her past claims about her Native American heritage. On Fox News, Brown responded to a statement Warren made about him being too cozy with Wall Street: “When you're running for elective office … you have to pass a test and the test is about truthfulness and...

Take it for what’s it’s worth, Scott Brown, because after all I’m addressing you in the Herald, and “the Boston Herald is the Boston Herald,” as Granny Warren, the Native American emeritus, said yesterday on MSNBC (where else?). But here at the Boston Herald, that is the Boston Herald, I’m telling you, Scott, don’t even think about another debate at the Ted Kennedy All-You-Can-Drink Happy Hour Institute. Tom Brokaw? Yeah, he’s “respected” all right. By moonbats. Forget the exploding trucks of yesteryear, let’s look at what his alma mater NBC did just this week, and by NBC, I also mean...

Yesterday afternoon at Netroots Nation in Providence, RI, I attempted to ask the embattled Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) about his campaign, specifically his record as the deciding vote for Obamacare. Ohio voters passted an amendment to their constitution outlawing the Democrats' health care law by a wide margin in 2011: Ohioans overwhelmingly rejected the healthcare mandate provisions of Obamacare. They did this by handily passing an amendment to the state’s constitution that reads, in part, as follows: No federal, state, or local law or rule shall compel, directly or indirectly, any person, employer, or health care provider to participate in...

A new study by 22 biologists and ecologists has found that environmental changes on our planet are reaching a point of no return that leads to mass extinctions and harms human welfare. The situation, said one scientist, “scares the hell out of me.” That would be James H. Brown, one of the authors of alarming paper published by Nature, talking to New York Times Green blogger Justin Gillis. Brown is not one of your everyday cranks predicting raptures and the end of days. He is a macroecologist at the University of New Mexico. And as The Atlantic's James Fallows, who...

U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren passionately defended her Native American heritage, after reaching Springfield by train today for the state Democratic Convention on Saturday. About 5,000 delegates on Saturday are expected to vote to endorse Warren as the Democratic pick for Senate to face Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown in November. The endorsement could give her some momentum for the months before the general election. "My mother and father fell in love," Warren, 63, told reporters after disembarking from a train with dozens of supporters at the train station and then rallying backers with a stump speech at Stearns Square...
